Pure Substances

A pure substance is matter that is made of only one kind of particle. For example, the oxygen in a tank is a pure substance.

Page 6: Elements.compounds.mixtures

Elements

An element is a pure substance that is made of only one type of atom. For example, aluminum is an element.

Compounds

A compound is a pure substance made of two or more elements that join chemically. Water is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen.

Common Compounds

Table salt is a common compound. The elements sodium and chlorine join to make salt.

Sugar is also a common compound. It is made of the elements carbon, hydrogen and oxygen

Mixtures

A mixture contains two or more pure substances. The substances are mixed together. They do NOT join chemically. Air is a mixture of gases.

Mixtures - Facts

Mixtures are NOT pure substances

In a mixture 2 or more substances come together

They do NOT join chemically

They can be heterogeneous or homogeneous

Page 11: Elements.compounds.mixtures

Heterogeneous Mixtures

A suspension is one kind of heterogeneous mixture. When you shake salad dressing, drops of oil and drops of vinegar mix but you an still see the different parts.

Page 12: Elements.compounds.mixtures

Homogeneous Mixtures

A solution is a homogeneous mixture. In a solution , one material dissolves in another material. You cannot see the different parts in this kind of mixture. For example, think about adding sugar to a glass of tea. The sugar dissolves and you can’t see it.
