Washing hints

Sorting the laundryFollow the wash code symbols on eachgarment label and the manufacturer’swashing instructions. Sort the laundry asfollows: whites, coloureds, synthetics, delicates, woollens.

Temperatures

Before loading the laundryNever wash whites and colouredstogether. Whites may lose their“whiteness” in the wash.New coloured items may run in the firstwash; they should therefore be washedseparately the first time.Make sure that no metal objectsare left in the laundry (e.g. hairclips, safety pins, pins).Button up pillowcases, close zipfasteners, hooks and poppers. Tie anybelts or long tapes.Remove persistent stains beforewashing.

Rub particularly soiled areas with aspecial detergent or detergent paste.Treat curtains with special care. Removehooks or tie them up in a bag or net.

Maximum loadsRecommended loads are indicated inthe programme charts.General rules:Cotton, linen: drum full but not tootightly packed;Synthetics: drum no more than half full;Delicate fabrics and woollens: drumno more than one third full.Washing a maximum load makes themost efficient use of water and energy. For heavily soiled laundry, reduce theload size.

Laundry weightsThe following weights are indicative:

Removing stainsStubborn stains may not be removed byjust water and detergent. It is thereforeadvisable to treat them prior to washing.Blood: treat fresh stains with cold water. For dried stains, soak overnight in waterwith a special detergent then rub in thesoap and water.

Oil based paint: moisten with benzinestain remover, lay the garment on a softcloth and dab the stain; treat severaltimes.Dried grease stains: moisten withturpentine, lay the garment on a softsurface and dab the stain with thefingertips and a cotton cloth.Rust: oxalic acid dissolved in hot wateror a rust removing product used cold.Be careful with rust stains which are notrecent since the cellulose structure willalready have been damaged and thefabric tends to hole.Mould stains: treat with bleach, rinsewell (whites and fast coloureds only).Grass: soap lightly and treat with bleach(whites and fast coloureds only).Ball point pen and glue: moisten withacetone (*), lay the garment on a softcloth and dab the stain.Lipstick: moisten with acetone asabove, then treat stains with methylatedspirits. Remove any residual marks fromwhite fabrics with bleach.Red wine: soak in water and detergent, rinse and treat with acetic or citric acid, then rinse. Treat any residual marks withbleach.Ink: depending on the type of ink, moisten the fabric first with acetone (*),then with acetic acid; treat any residualmarks on white fabrics with bleach andthen rinse thoroughly.Tar stains: first treat with stain remover, methylated spirits or benzine, then rubwith detergent paste.(*) do not use acetone on artificial silk.

Detergents and additivesGood washing results also depend onthe choice of detergent and use of thecorrect quantities to avoid waste andprotect the environment. Althoughbiodegradable, detergents containsubstances which, in large quantities, can upset the delicate balance of nature. The choice of detergent will depend onthe type of fabric (delicates, woollens, cottons, etc.), the colour, washingtemperature and degree of soiling. All commonly available washing machinedetergents may be used in thisappliance:• powder detergents for all types of

fabric,• powder detergents for delicate fabrics

(60°C max) and woollens,• liquid detergents, preferably for low

temperature wash programmes (60°Cmax) for all types of fabric, or specialfor woollens only.

The detergent and any additives mustbe placed in the appropriatecompartments of the dispenser drawerbefore starting the wash programme. If using concentrated powder or liquiddetergents, a programme withoutprewash must be selected. The washing machine incorporates arecirculation system which allows anoptimal use of the concentrateddetergent.Pour liquid detergent into the dispenserdrawer compartment marked justbefore starting the programme.Any fabric softener or starching additivesmust be poured into the compartmentmarked before starting the washprogramme.

132975482_EN.qxd 15/03/2007 15.22 Pagina 16

Page 17: Electrolux EWF 10040 W User Manual

Follow the product manufacturer’srecommendations on quantities to useand do not exceed the «MAX» markin the detergent dispenser drawer.

Quantity of detergent to be usedThe type and quantity of detergent willdepend on the type of fabric, load size, degree of soiling and hardness of thewater used.Water hardness is classified in so-called“degrees” of hardness. Information onhardness of the water in your area canbe obtained from the relevant watersupply company, or from your localauthority.Follow the product manufacturers’instructions on quantities to use.Use less detergent if:• you are washing a small load,• the laundry is lightly soiled,• large amounts of foam form during

washing.

Care and cleaning

You must DISCONNECT the appliancefrom the electricity supply, before youcan carry out any cleaning ormaintenance work.

DescalingThe water we use normally containslime. It is a good idea to periodically usea water softening powder in themachine. Do this separately from anylaundry washing, and according to thesoftening powder manufacturer'sinstructions. This will help to prevent theformation of lime deposits.

After each washLeave the door open for a while. Thishelps to prevent mould and stagnantsmells forming inside the appliance.Keeping the door open after a wash willalso help to preserve the door seal.

Maintenance WashWith the use of low temperature washesit is possible to get a build up of residuesinside the drum. We recommend that a maintenancewash be performed on a regular basis. To run a maintenance wash:• The drum should be empty of laundry.• Select the hottest cotton wash

programme.• Use a normal measure of detergent,

must be a powder with biologicalproperties.

External cleaningClean the exterior cabinet of theappliance with soap and water only, andthen dry thoroughly.

Cleaning the dispenser drawerThe washing powder and additivedispenser drawer should be cleanedregularly.Remove the drawer by pressing thecatch downwards and by pulling it out.Flush it out under a tap, to remove anytraces of accumulated powder.

To aid cleaning, the top part of theadditive compartment should beremoved.

Cleaning the drawer recessHaving removed the drawer, use a smallbrush to clean the recess, ensuring thatall washing powder residue is removedfrom the upper and lower part of therecess.Replace the drawer and run the rinseprogramme without any clothes in thedrum.
