convencer a participar; a ideia de
trabalhar em algo que envolve duas
grandes paixes minhas (o design e a
msica) era demasiado apetecvel para
deixar passar ao lado.
Esta oi uma excelente oportunidade
para conjugar os dois temas, abordando-
-os com duas aproximaes que
normalmente (e inelizmente) no
contexto acadmico e prossional no
so habituais: numa primeira instncia
Nesta ltima,
destaco a oportunidade de utilizar tipos
de madeira na composio dos cartazes
e o ambiente descontrado, experimental
e cooperativo que reinou em ambos os
dias do workshop.
No cartaz que executei, tentei usar
uma rase simples que descrevesse a
importncia do papel da msica na
construo da minha vida pessoal
e prossional (I Am What I Ear).
Na palavra Ear, procurei azer um
pequeno jogo, construndo a letra E
I coness that the name o the workshop
was halway to convince me to
participate, the idea o working on
something that involves my two great
passions (design and music) was too
tempting to pass along.
This was an excellent opportunity to
combine the two themes, covering
them with two approaches that usually
(and unortunately) in the academic
and proessional context are unusual:
rst to make a refection and to h ave a
critical look over the theme music and
the role o the designer in its graphic
materialization, and, later on, in the trial
and implementation o an idea in the
context o a workshop. In this last one,
I highlight the opportunity to use wood
type in the composition o the posters
and the relaxed, experimental andcooperative ambient elt on both days
o the workshop.
In the poster Ive done, I tried to
use a simple phrase to describe the
importance o the role o music in
the construction o my personal and
proessional lie (I Am What I Ear).
In the word Ear, I tried to do a little
game, building the letter E in order
to give the visual idea o an ear (while
reerring to the store that sponsored
the workshop).

Opening your ears wont break
your heart
parte ulcral do processo criativo. Escolher
It was an enriching experience or me,
as I manage to exercise a key part o the
creative process. Choosing the best path
to the solution in a short ti me and with
the material there is. Direct contact with
the material helped a lot to have other
ideas. Sometimes the digital world blinds
our minds.

Som msica boa
O workshop oi interessante e vejo a
minha participao como sendo positiva.
Tempo que dediquei experimentao
livre e, no menos importante,
observao e interaco com os restantes
elementos. O balano positivo ainda
que, em relao ao meu cartaz, sinta
que quei aqum do que idealizava.
O que no depreendo como sendo mau,
mas sim mais uma ajuda para tentar,
experimentar, para me libertar de
preconceitos. A expresso som msica
tinta. Todavia e inelizmente no me oi
possvel estar presente no segundo dia.
Sound is good music
The workshop was interesting and I seemy participation as being positive. Time
I devoted to ree trial, and not least, to
observation and interaction with the
other elements. The balance is positive
even though, in relation to my poster, I
eel distant rom what was envisioned.
I dont see it as being bad, but more as
an attempt to try, experiment, to ree
mysel rom prejudice. The expression
sound is good music was the basis to
represent the (contradictory) idea that
i good music is made up o sounds
then all the sound is good music. As it
is perceived in the picture, my intention
was to make one rst attempt, so that
I would create a second poster ater.
Thence the ink marks. However and
unortunately I was unable to attend
the second day o the workshop.

com que a sua participao lhe permita
manter a sua individualidade, ao mesmo
tempo que um agente criador de uma
legado cultural que vai enriquecendo
com a sua representao visual.
A criao e conceptualizao de ideias/
conceitos em aplicaes que refectem a
mudana do meio comunicacional, uma
orma de questionar o pensamento sobre
as suas unes e as sensaes criadas
pelos seus objectos, tornam passvel
a sua reinterpretao, reinveno e
reorganizao.
A recepo do programa via meio
digital/redes sociais despoletou,
desde logo, um conceito e a ideia do
corpo humano como mero veculo de
percepo/sensao.
Sound Electrocardiogram
(2 Earz = 1 Hand / Selected Music)
Since ever Visual Communication,
just like Art and Music, is closely
linked to the History o Intelligence,
Knowledge and Human Culture. Being
it only inormation or simply leisure/
enjoyment, it is and will always be
connected to the vehicle o musical
perception through hearing.
The search or visual representationo what is heard by us is always
questionable, since it is a unique and
individual experience. The element o
surprise or lack o knowledge about the
sound, poses a direct reaction between
the personal domain o perception/
sensation, which also aect the body
and its language, and can eventually be
translated into a visual reinterpretation.
The response to a new communication
paradigm created by the use o new
technologies has infuenced the way
we create and distribute Art and Music,
which turns into a constant search or
new experiences by the listener/user. This
sensory experience has an impact both in
his Visual Culture, and on the his original
concept o music as a combination o
sounds/silence/time through the melody/
harmony/rhythm and other components
such as height/pitch/intensity/duration.
From idea and concepts, we went to
practice. Aim: to establish a direct link
between the perception that enters the
ear and the point o the scriber object. To
est e estar sempre conectada ao veculo
de percepo musical via audio.
A procura da representao visual
do que por ns ouvido sempre
questionvel, j que uma experincia
nica e individual.
reinterpretao visual.
A resposta a um novo paradigma
comunicacional gerado pela utilizao
das novas tecnologias tem infuenciado o
modo de criar e distribuir Arte e Msica,
que se revela numa constante busca de
novas experincias por parte do ouvinte/
utilizador. Esta experincia sensorial,
acaba por infuenciar quer a sua Cultura
Visual, quer o prprio conceito original
de Msica, enquanto combinao
de sons/silncio/tempo atravs da
melodia/harmonia/ritmo e de outros
componentes como altura/timbre/
intensidade/durao.
Da ideia e dos conceitos, passmos
prtica. Objectivo, estabelecer uma
ligao directa entre a percepo que
entra no ouvido e a ponta do objecto
riscador. Conectar a Orelha a um suporte
sico (neste caso a olha de papel de
embrulho da Quebra Orelha), e procurar
no limite uma representao visual da
msica atravs do uso do corpo como
veculo de aco livre, sem obstculos
intelectuais, critrios culturais ou
sugestes emocionais.
espontaneidade do acto sonoro-plstico,
enquadrar a experincia do ouvinte/
utilizador e a sua percepo sensorial,
procurando novas linguagens que so
criadas sem reerncias a memrias
ou vivncias comuns. A comunicao
esttica ter que se concentrar no
indivduo, no espontneo e na busca de
novos estmulos para os nossos rgos
sensoriais. De orma simples e ecaz,
valorizar o papel da Msica como Arte
e lugar de ruio esttica, quer para
o artista quer para o ouvinte, azendo

connect the ear to a physical medium (in
this case the sheet o the Quebra Orelhas
wrapping paper) and to nd, in the limit,
a visual representation o the music
through the use o the body as a vehicle o
ree action, out o intellectual obstacles,
cultural criteria or emotional cues.
To be able to pass all these elements to the
listener/user, through the representation
o their musical perception is a challenge
that ocuses on the debate to give the
audience a chance to participate, to try
and to be hersel the artist. To add theelement o surprise, created by the act
that I didnt know wich music would
Aonso Macedo select, and the lack o
vision and visual reerences, blindolded
during the hearing/action registration
o the concept, allowed the music going
through the hand to make a sincere
representation o what was heard.
SoundElectrocardiogram was the result
o emotions caused by each theme,
refected in the light and fuid gestures
o the action. At the same time it takes
us back toAction Paintingand its surreal
and automatic drawing. The spontaneity
o the plastic-sound act, results in an
aesthetic experience that seemingly has no
concerns with the nal product and in the
idea that is communicated to the audience.
The visual culture o the uture must
meet the experience o the listener/user
and his sensory perception, looking or
new languages that are created without
reerence to common experiences or
memories. The aesthetic communication
will have to ocus on the individual, in
the spontaneous and in the search or
new stimuli or our sensory organs.
Simply and eectively, enhancing the role
o music as Art and place or aesthetic
enjoyment, both or the artist and the
listener, so that their participation
will allow them to maintain their
individuality being at the same time a
creative agent o a cultural legacy that
will enrich with its visual representation.
The creation and conceptualisation
o ideas/concepts in applications that
refect the change o the communicationenvironment, is a way o questioning
the thought o their unctions and
the eelings created by their objects,
become susceptible to reinterpretation,
reinvention and reorganization. This
was the motto or participation in this
workshop, since these activities allow us
to question the present and refect on a
uture that, in the ury o his rapacious
development, leaves us little time or
thinking about any aesthetic act and,
most o all, about music.
The reception o the programme via
digital/social networks triggered, rst,
a concept and the idea o the human
body as a mere vehicle o perception/
sensation. To let the Sound Inputs turn
into Visual Outputs, with the Delay
provided by the absence o visual
reerence, allows the sound to go all
the way rom head to hand over a real
experience o pure sound enjoyment.
The experience, rather than the end
result, explores most o all the action
itsel, leaving another sensation o pure
conceptual delirium...
