1 EL INFORMADOR AATSP LONG ISLAND CHAPTER www.aatsplongisland.org September 2014 President’s Letter Dear Colleagues: Thank you for your support in electing me as your new president. I am thrilled to have attended the Annual AATSP Conference this summer that took place in Panama City, Panama as I have done in the past. This year's event was more exciting because I was able to represent our Chapter and establish new professional connections with the community-at-large. I am very eager to embark on a new school year with you in which we continue to hone our teaching skills, promote our professional learning community, and bring exciting educational opportunities to our students. My message to you for this school year is: Stay motivated. Maintain that special joy for the profession and love of languages that brought you to become a teacher in the first place, and has kept you coming back each year. Times have been intense in recent years, but we have the power to choose how much we let those aspects affect us. Choose to keep the focus on your students and the specialness of finding your calling in this profession. Doing so puts some of the other aspects into a different perspective, and allows us to stay vibrant. To help achieve that end, we are pleased to offer more workshops in the fall to accommodate teachers' professional development needs. On the pages that follow, you will find information about our Chapter events and contests for this school year. Chapter members may also be invited to our Entrega Ceremony in May to acknowledge the successes of their students- it is an event that is not-to-be-missed! Lastly, I hope that you will consider participating on the executive council- it is exciting to be part of the planning process, and rewarding to put one's efforts toward promoting our discipline. Please visit our website at www.aatsplongisland.org to view the meeting schedule, and feel free to contact me with any questions that you might have. I hope to see you at an upcoming meeting. Let's have a year that is full of motivation and enthusiasm! Julie Weilgart President Pictures from the 2014 AATSP Conference in Panama City, Panama

2014 Entrega de Premios

The Long Island Chapter of the AATSP honored Long Island’s outstanding Spanish students on May 30th at

Jericho HS. The celebration focused on the accomplishments of all the young people who were being honored for their “ORO” placement on the National Spanish Exam, the winning entries in the Victor Baptiste Essay Contest, two Judy Abrams/Margaret Fernandez-NSE Scholarship recipients and the winners of our Design-A-Card Contest. Continuing with the tradition of focusing the evening on one country’s theme, the evening began with a tapas reception of Latin/Caribbean hors d’oeuvres.

The program opened with a welcome from the new chapter president, Julie Weilgart. Opening the presentation of awards was Liliana Bascetta, the Judy Abrams/ Margaret Fernandez-NSE Scholarship coordinator, who presented two $1,000 scholarships. This year’s recipients were Reva Butensky of Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK HS (teacher was Dorothy Kleinman) and Lawrence Wolf-Sonkin of Half Hollow Hills HS East (teacher was Alina Tamburello). The ceremony continued with ten winners whose artistic entries in the Design-A-Card Contest earned them prizes. Continuing with the Latin theme of the evening, the Rhythmology dance ensemble entertained students, families and teachers. Following the entertainment was the presentation to eleven students that were recognized for their outstanding entries in the Victor Baptiste Essay Contest.

As presenters to the evening’s final honorees, Donna Bennett, coordinator of the National Spanish Exam, and Julie Weilgart awarded 144 students with “gold” medallions for their ORO placement on the National Spanish Exam. Forty-two of these ORO winners were additionally recognized for scoring in the 99th percentile nationally on the NSE. Each of the 144 ORO winners in attendance received a $25 or $50 check for their ORO or 99% placement respectively. As part of our raffle for the evening, four lucky teachers were recipients of Staples gift cards.

We thank the students, families and teachers who came to honor Long Island’s outstanding Spanish students and to celebrate the accomplishments they have made this past year. We hope to see you at our Entrega de Premios next year.
