NATIONAL SCHOOL CHOICE WEEK EKA is one of more than 9,000 schools participating in National School
Choice Week (January 25–31, 2015). The goal of the Week is to shine a
positive spotlight on all types of education options for children—from
traditional public schools to public charter schools, magnet schools, private
schools, online learning and homeschooling.
“We are excited to have EKA participate in National School Choice Week
with this special event,” said Andrew Campanella, National School Choice
Week president. “It is because of great events like this that National School
Choice Week, in Nevada and across the country, will break records as the
largest and most influential celebration of educational opportunity in
American history." Students at EKA will be performing the National School
Choice Dance as a group on Tuesday, January 27th.
Also, come visit us at our booth at the Galleria Mall on Saturday, January
31st from 11—4 at the School Choice Fair.
The latest school accountability reports are now available.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Second Semester has begun at EKA! We welcome our new students and families to EKA!
Enrollment packages for the 2015 – 2016 school year have been sent home with current students.
Incoming Kindergarten siblings of current EKA students can obtain new enrollment packages on
Tuesday, February 3rd, when open enrollment begins for the upcoming year.
If you know of someone that might benefit from our technology infused project based learning,
please have them go to our website and learn what it takes to become an EKA student.
I also wanted to give you an update on the status of our school zone on Mountain Vista. The
Clark County Building Department has approved our permit application and the construction
contractor has been selected. A surety bond is being secured (a requirement of the County). It is
still our hope that construction for the flasher system and the signs changing the speed limit from
45 to 25 when students are present will commence this summer and be complete before we return
for the 2015 – 2016 school year. The cost for this project should come in at about $250,000
including legal fees as well as the physical construction costs. All schools must pay for their own
school zone and flasher systems. This is not a cost the County absorbs, though they will maintain
the signs and flashers once they are installed.
Lastly, I wanted to tell you about National School Choice Week on January 25 – 31st. This
year, EKA will be participating in National School Choice Week by taping our performance of a
school-wide dance on Tuesday, January 27th. Students in all classes have been learning the dance
that can be found at http://schoolchoiceweek.com/dance. You are welcome to learn it too and
help your student to be prepared for the big day!
Sincerely,
Ms. Mattson
EKA Happenings: Superintendent

on Facebook! This is your opportunity to ask questions of EKA staff and
administration, as well as a venue for EKA to ask your opinion on school
happenings. EKA families just need to put in a request to join this closed page!
We look forward to using this new system to improve communications
between the school and our EKA families.
Parents/Guardians, if you do not have access to you or your students' portal in Infinite Campus, please contact the front offices for more information. The portal will give you helpful information on your
student's progress during the school year.

From Ms. G... The Elementary campus is very excited about the start of the second semester. Our students continue to show steady progress in all areas and are great citizens of our school. I am especially excited to see that our parents and students are committed to coming to school each day. For the second quarter of the school year, we had over 100 students earn perfect attendance awards! That is very impressive because to earn that award the student cannot be absent for any part of the day and must not have any tardies. Many of our elementary students will be getting an opportunity to go on field trips in the next few weeks. Kindergarten students will be going to the Smith Center to see a production based on the work of Jim Henson. All of our first graders are invited to go on a field trip to the Children's Discovery Museum where they will experience hands on science. Finally, our fourth and fifth graders are headed off to a live theatre production at a local high school. For each of these trips, our students will be riding the bus, which is always exciting.

DONATIONS NEEDED Parents and Students - As we are entering second semester, our supply of copy paper is
getting very low. We are once again asking for donations of white and colored copy paper. Please drop these by the front office and we will make certain that your child's
advisor receives the donation.
Attention 4/5 Parents: DONATIONS NEEDED The advisors are asking for loose leaf, college lined paper. Please bring all paper
to the front office or send it directly to class with your student. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE If your student needs to carry medicine on their person or in the Health Office, you MUST talk with our FASAs to get all of the proper paperwork and forms in place. This includes: asthma inhalers, Epi-Pens,
prescription medications and over the counter medications such as Motrin, Benadryl, Tylenol, cough drops, etc.
SCIENCE FAIR IN THE 4TH & 5TH GRADES! After weeks of planning and preparation, the 4/5 students will be participating in their second annual science fair. Students have been working and planning for weeks to prepare their science projects for submission. Projects will be judged by EKA staff and secondary students. Selected students may continue on to a science fair at UNLV. Parents are invited to walk though the science fair on Thursday, January 29th from 4:00 to 5:00.

From Mr. Keyer... From the Secondary Principal
Happy New Year from the secondary staff at EKA! I hope that all parents/student/staff had an enjoyable break at the holidays and are ready to begin semester two. Parents/guardians should have received their student’s first semester report card in the mail. The last session of seminars for the first semester was Friday, December 5, 2014. The students filled out a form with their top choices for second semester seminars before holiday break on December 19, 2014. Advisors will let students know their new seminar for second semester should there be a fee requirement ($5-$10) associated. All fees need to be paid in Building B prior to Friday, January 30, 2015, when the new seminars begin. All seminars for the second semester will be three session seminars occurring on Fridays in the months of January, February and March. The dates for these seminars are Jan. 30th, Feb. 27th, March 20th.
Re-enrollment for current students of Explore Knowledge Academy for next year begins on Friday, January 16, 2015 and closes on Friday, January 30, 2015. Enrollment for students not currently attending Explore Knowledge Academy for the school year of 2015-2016 will begin in early February.

ALL teacher email addresses are posted in the front offices.
Emergency Contact Information
If you have recently changed your contact information (email or phone numbers, specifically) please be sure to notify the front office and change them on your
student’s emergency cards.
Lunch
Please send your child’s lunch with the needed utensils. We cannot provide them. Also, please remember to label your child’s belongings. This includes lunch boxes and lunch bags. This will prevent your student’s lunch from getting
mixed up with someone else’s.
Early Pick-up
Parents who need to have their children picked up from school early by a person other than the child’s legal guardian need to send in an email, note or fax with picture ID stating the name of that individual. We need something IN WRITING or the student will NOT be released. This is a legal matter and not merely an EKA policy. We abide by this to protect you and your kids and to function as an
institution with integrity.
Missed School Work Policy When your child is absent, please be sure to contact their advisor to request any missed assignments. All EKA advisors can be reached via email through our website. Parents are responsible for contacting the advisors. Also, please check back with the advisor when coming in to collect missing work to make sure it has been brought to the front office.
If your student needs to carry medicine on their person or in the Health Office, you MUST talk with our FASAs to get
all of the proper paperwork and forms in place.
FINANCE Full-day Kindergarten tuition is due the first of each month. A statement will be sent home with your student the last week of each preceding month. Cash, check or money order is accepted.
POLICY REMINDER: A $15.00 monthly late fee will be charged for any payments received after the 10th of the month. A $30.00 fee will be charged. for all returned checks. REGISTRAR If you have not filled out a Household Census Form, we need you to do so. Please see the front office if you have any questions or are in need of the form. If any of your contact information has changed, please fill
out the ‘change of information’ form so that we can have the most accurate access to contacting you. Our new database is only as good as the information we have inside of it. Please keep us up to date so you can continue to be an involved and informed parent at EKA.
