(25-10) a good shot,” coach Troy Barr said. “I thought he had the speed to get down the floor and make some- thing happen. I knew he was going to have to throw up something like that. “I feel sorry for the PRP kids. I hate to win or lose a game like that, but it went in and here we go. Trey Rakes is so important to us it’s unbelievable.” Rakes’ shot capped a frantic final few minutes that included three lead changes and a huge charge drawn by junior Chris Em- bry. PRP star Max Cle- mons drove the left side of the lane and was called for the offensive foul with 3.5 seconds left. After a Bullitt East timeout, Rakes did his thing. “Those kids are win- ners,” PRP coach Dale Ma- brey said of the Chargers. “They feed off each other and know where to get the ball when they need a bas- ket.” The victory sends Bul- litt East (27-4) into its third Sweet 16. The Chargers will face top-ranked Trini- ty next Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Rupp Arena. The Chargers also beat PRP (26-7) in last year’s re- gional final. “Think about this: Has anybody beaten PRP in back-to-back regional fi- nals?” Barr asked. “I doubt it. I doubt very seriously, and that’s why I thought this was going to be ex- tremely hard. I am just so proud of our kids.” University of Kentucky commitment Derek Willis hit only 8 of 22 shots but finished with 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Char- gers. Rakes added 10 points and six assists, while Rusty Troutman had eight points and Kory Cau- field seven. The Chargers were 18 of 42 from the field, in- cluding 5 of 15 on 3-point- ers, and outrebounded PRP 32-30. PRP hit 16 of 49 shots. Clemons, a Bellar- mine signee, led the Pan- thers with 15 points and eight rebounds. “This is such a huge win for us,” Rakes said. “We weren’t projected to win this region again, but we proved everybody wrong. We just came out and did our thing.” It was close all the way. PRP had the biggest lead of the first half at 8-2, and the Chargers opened the big- gest lead of the game at 34- 27 early in the fourth quar- ter. But it tightened back up in a hurry. Clemons scored on a putback, Antonio McDaniels hit two free throws and Cortez Macklin added another free throw in a 5-0 PRP run that cut it to 39-38 at 4:28. “It was a dogfight,” Barr said. “I knew it was going to stay close.” Willis’ dunk at 3:55 made it 41-38, but McDa- niels answered with a 3- pointer to tie it, then countered a Willis bucket with another 3-pointer to give the Panthers a 44-43 lead with 1:23 left. The Chargers worked the clock down, and Rakes was fouled with 25.6 sec- onds to play. He hit the first free throw and missed the second, but Embry came away with the offensive re- bound. McDaniels then stole the ball from Embry. After a timeout, Embry made up for his turnover when he slid over as Cle- mons drove past Willis to draw the charge. “Coach told us he need- ed one more charge,” Em- bry said. “I just jumped over. I knew I was set and ready for it. I was just hop- ing the refs would call it right.” Rakes did the rest. Barr said he caught the ball “a little too deep,” taking it near the baseline, but he raced downcourt and fired. “I knew we had to get up the court,” Rakes said. “I was hoping to try and cre- ate for one of my team- mates and see if they could get open, but they didn’t, so I just stepped up. God helped me with that one. It was a lucky shot.” Jody Demling can be reached at (502) 582-7176. With the 6-foot-6 Wesley racking up 19 points, 13 re- bounds and seven blocked shots, Oldham County (29-5) stretched its win- ning streak to 16 games by beating Collins 50-40 in the final. “Wesley is a Player of the Year candidate (in the region) and the best player I’ve had a chance of coach- ing,” Holland said. “I’ve told him to do his best when it is required, and tonight it was required.” Oldham County’s vic- tory — its second over Col- lins this season — earned the Colonels the school’s 15 th trip to the Boys’ Sweet 16 opening March 14 in Rupp Arena. The Colonels will play Bowling Green at noon March 15 in the first round. Wesley scored 13 points as the Colonels grabbed a 16-6 lead early in the sec- ond period. He wound up hitting 7 of 13 shots, in- cluding 1 of 3 three-point tries. After shooting two airballs early, he swished a three for an 11-6 lead. Ten of his rebounds came off the defensive board, where Oldham County limited 6-8 Collins senior Brian Stone to 2- for-9 shooting and six points and six rebounds. “We made sure we clogged up the paint area,” Wesley said. “We played on his left hand and knew his moves around the basket. It was a championship game, and I figured I had to step up.” Collins, in only its sec- ond year after Shelby County High was split into two schools, seemed jit- tery from the start, com- mitting seven turnovers in the first quarter and 25 for the game. But coach Chris Gaither didn’t blame the loss on that. “It wasn’t nervous- ness,” he said. “We didn’t play up to our potential, and Stone had an off night. Oldham County did a good job of changing defenses. “Wesley is a good player and hard to guard. “He’s so versatile he can come out on the floor to handle the ball.” Sam Gruber and re- serve Garrett Masters each scored eight points for Oldham County, and Parker Simpson added sev- en. The Colonels finished with 17 turnovers. Masters, who started the season on the junior varsity, scored eight straight points in the third quarter against Collins’ full-court press to lift Old- ham County to a 38-24 lead. “I was playing as hard as I could and getting ev- erything I could,” Masters said. “Masters has come on the last month,” Holland said. “He’s long and active, and he’s good at going and finishing around the bas- ket.” Dez Marshall led the Ti- tans (24-11) with 11 points, with Michael Brooks get- ting seven points and sev- en rebounds. Even though Wesley scored 13 in the first half, Oldham County led only 22-18 at the break. The Col- onels scored the first eight points of the third quarter to make it 30-18. Collins never quit bat- tling and went on a 13-2 spurt to draw within 40-37. Brooks, Buddy Johnson and Marshall each hit a 3- pointer in that rally, but Wesley got Oldham County back in gear. Wesley scored a bucket and Jacob Kopp added two free throws. Marshall scored on a steal to make it 44-39, but Collins never got closer. “Our kids battled as hard as they could,” Gaith- er said. “We’re only in our second year, but I think we put fear in the people’s minds that we’ll be back (in the regional) year after year.” EIGHTH REGION BOYS Wesley’s 19 points drive Colonels back to Sweet 16 By Bob White Special to The Courier-Journal Collins 6 12 11 11 - 40 Oldham Co. 12 10 16 12 - 50 Collins (24-11) – Marshall 11, Brooks 7, Stone 6, Johnson 6, L. NEW CASTLE, Ky. — Ty-ler Wesley stepped up theway coach Jason Hollandthought he would, and Old-ham County repeated asthe boys’ Eighth Regionbasketball tournamentchampion Tuesday night.

With the 6-foot-6 Wesleyracking up 19 points, 13 re-bounds and seven blockedshots, Oldham County(29-5) stretched its win-ning streak to 16 games bybeating Collins 50-40 in thefinal.

“Wesley is a Player ofthe Year candidate (in theregion) and the best playerI’ve had a chance of coach-ing,” Holland said. “I’vetold him to do his best whenit is required, and tonight itwas required.”

Oldham County’s vic-tory — its second over Col-lins this season — earnedthe Colonels the school’s15th trip to the Boys’ Sweet16 opening March 14 inRupp Arena. The Colonelswill play Bowling Green atnoon March 15 in the firstround.

Wesley scored 13 pointsas the Colonels grabbed a16-6 lead early in the sec-ond period. He wound uphitting 7 of 13 shots, in-cluding 1 of 3 three-pointtries. After shooting twoairballs early, he swished athree for an 11-6 lead.

Ten of his reboundscame off the defensiveboard, where OldhamCounty limited 6-8 Collinssenior Brian Stone to 2-for-9 shooting and sixpoints and six rebounds.

“We made sure we

clogged up the paint area,”Wesley said. “We played onhis left hand and knew hismoves around the basket. It was a championshipgame, and I figured I had tostep up.”

Collins, in only its sec-ond year after ShelbyCounty High was split intotwo schools, seemed jit-tery from the start, com-mitting seven turnovers inthe first quarter and 25 forthe game. But coach ChrisGaither didn’t blame theloss on that.

“It wasn’t nervous-ness,” he said. “We didn’tplay up to our potential, and Stone had an off night.Oldham County did a goodjob of changing defenses.

“Wesley is a good playerand hard to guard. “He’s soversatile he can come outon the floor to handle theball.”

Sam Gruber and re-serve Garrett Masterseach scored eight pointsfor Oldham County, and

Parker Simpson added sev-en. The Colonels finishedwith 17 turnovers.

Masters, who startedthe season on the juniorvarsity, scored eightstraight points in the thirdquarter against Collins’full-court press to lift Old-ham County to a 38-24 lead.

“I was playing as hardas I could and getting ev-erything I could,” Masterssaid.

“Masters has come onthe last month,” Hollandsaid. “He’s long and active, and he’s good at going andfinishing around the bas-ket.”

Dez Marshall led the Ti-tans (24-11) with 11 points, with Michael Brooks get-ting seven points and sev-en rebounds.

Even though Wesleyscored 13 in the first half,Oldham County led only22-18 at the break. The Col-onels scored the first eightpoints of the third quarterto make it 30-18.

Collins never quit bat-tling and went on a 13-2spurt to draw within 40-37.Brooks, Buddy Johnsonand Marshall each hit a 3-pointer in that rally, butWesley got Oldham Countyback in gear.

Wesley scored a bucketand Jacob Kopp added twofree throws. Marshallscored on a steal to make it44-39, but Collins never gotcloser.

“Our kids battled ashard as they could,” Gaith-er said. “We’re only in oursecond year, but I think weput fear in the people’sminds that we’ll be back (inthe regional) year afteryear.”
