REFLECTION ON THE LITURGY OF THE WORD T he hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs. This response to the psalm and today’s readings attest to this proclamation. In Isaiah the Lord invites everyone to share in food and drink. Jesus invites the crowd to stay and feed thousands with five loaves and two fish. St. Paul reminds us that nothing will separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. The Gospel begins shortly after Jesus is told about the death of John the Baptist and he withdrew to a desert- ed place to pray, but this time the crowd follows him. Jesus feels compassion for them and cures their sick and he also feeds them. We witness Jesus at prayer before multiplying the loaves and fish, and looking up to heaven. This act of prayer takes place before many important events throughout his ministry, his Baptism, Transfigura- tion (which we celebrate this Thursday) and Passion. This miracle is a preparation for the bread that will be given in the Eucharist. In all the Gospels, Jesus’ actions before he multiplies the loaves, recall the rite of breaking the bread, the Eucharist. The actions are: taking the bread, lifting his eyes up to heaven (praying), pronouncing the blessing, breaking the bread and giving it to the disciples. These actions are found in the stories of the multiplication of the loaves and, word for word, at the Last Supper and in the Consecration of every Mass. As Jesus invites us to this Eucharistic banquet we are nourished and strengthened for our earthly journey and it becomes the foretaste and promise of our own Paschal Feast of Heaven. Our Parish Mission: By the grace of God, we, the people of the Roman Catholic Parish of Saint Frances Cabrini, firmly rooted in the Apostolic Tradion of the Church and the Holy Scriptures, are called to connue the mission of Jesus Christ to build up the Kingdom of God in the world through our faithful living according to His teachings, our proclamaon of the Gospel by word and deed, and the worship of God in our private prayer as well as in our public celebraon of the Sacraments. We can do all things in Christ who strengthens us! REFLECTION ON THE LITURGY OF THE WORD FOR THE FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD

I n the Transfiguration, we catch a glimpse of where we are headed on our journey of life. Christ goes before us to show us the way and we are guided by his light. We pray that we too will be transformed and so bring Christ’s light to the rest of the world. In Baptism, the Lord blesses us and makes of us a great and holy nation. Too often we for-

get the promises that were made in Baptism. This feast reminds us of those promises and the promise God made us, on that day, to bring us to eternal life. Today we receive a foreshadowing of Resurrection glory to come. It is the reason for our hope and the strength we need to live a Christian life. We whose sins are washed clean through Baptism are given the promise of eternal glory with our Lord. We climb the mountain of our transfiguration to be transformed into the holy people of God who opens our minds and hearts to this saving mystery. The Transfiguration of Jesus is an event reported by the Synoptic Gospels in which Jesus is transfigured upon Mount Tabor. Jesus became radiant, spoke with Moses and Elijah and was called "Son" by God. It is one of the miracles of Jesus mentioned in the Gospels. This miracle is unique among others that appear in the Gospels,

in that the miracle happens to Jesus. Saint Thomas Aquinas considered the Transfiguration "the greatest miracle”: it complemented baptism and showed the perfection of life in Heaven. According to the Gospels, Peter, James and John were with Jesus on the mountain. The Transfiguration put Jesus above Moses and Elijah, the two preeminent figures of Judaism. It also supports his identity as the Son of God. In keeping with the Messianic Secret, Jesus tells the witnesses not to tell others what they saw until he has risen on the third day after his death on the cross. The principal account is found in the Gospels of Mat-thew, Mark & Luke while 2 Peter and the Gospel of John briefly allude to the event. (Matthew 17:1-9, Mark 9:2-8, Luke 9:28-36, 2 Peter 1:16-18, John 1:14)
