NEMA Picnic

Amazingly, the weather for thisyear’s NEMA picnic was simplydreary. We thought that by mov-

ing the picnic out two weeks to May 22we’d avoid the risk of bad weather thatoften dampens the picnic.

As the weekend approached, thediscussion in The Multihull Source officewas the forecast for the weekend. OnFriday morning, Bob announced that theforecast he heard on WMVR, whichbroadcasts from Martha’s Vineyard, wasthat it would be cloudy and cool but thatthe rain would stay to the south. Hmmm.The forecast on all of the Boston TV sta-tions was also that it would be cloudyand cool and the rain would stay to thesouth coming no further north than theCape and The Islands. Which of thesewas wishful thinking?

As it turned out, both forecasts werewrong as all of eastern Massachusettswas caught in a weather system thatwas cold, drizzling to full rain, and withthe wind blowing out of the northeast at10-15 knots.

Nevertheless, 16 brave souls madethe trek to Wareham to the home of Boband Jane Gleason where they found thegrill positioned downwind and ablyattended to by Catherine Kornyei,

coolers full of ice cold beer and theGleason’s living room warmed by a wellstoked cast iron stove. Syd Miller keptthe thin-blooded alive with hot coffeewhile the rest of us attempted to make adent in the abundant beer supply.

As promised, there wereWindRiders on the beach ready for any-one to take out for a sail, and TheMultihull Source’s new Corsair 2200Foiler, a power catamaran, was availablefor rides. But no one took advantage ofthe boats, or even ventured out to thebeach, preferring to eat, drink and con-verse indoors.

The 2005 Corsair Nationals wereheld in Pensacola, FL and hostedby the Pensacola Yacht Club (PYC).

Attendance was down this year (only 35boats) due in large part to concernsabout how Pensacola was recoveringfrom its encounter with Hurricane Ivanlast September. Although the region wasdevastated, the yacht club was up andrunning with new docks welcoming theCorsair fleet.

Sailors from New England andNEMA included Bob Gleason on his new31, Tri Me crewed by yours truly, EricWitte (who frequently crews for NEMAmember Jay Harris), and TomKorzenewski, another 31 owner fromLiverpool, NY. Also attending were RussKincaid from Auburn, NY with his F-27Blue Heron, and Peter Clay fromCataumet, MA. NEMA member GlenHowell from Raleigh, NC was also therewith his 31 Adios!. Glenn is a regular inthe New England NEMA race circuit.

Bob and I did our usual marathonstraight-through drive, leaving WarehamThursday evening and arriving inPensacola around midnight Friday. Korzarrived Saturday morning and we spentmost of the day taking care of the finaldetails of our new, never in the waterboat. We finally launched around 4 pmgiving us just enough time to sail over toour quarters for the week, the home ofKirk and Susan Newkirk. They own KeySailing and are mainstays of the beachcat community. Eric flew in Sundaymorning and we managed to get in anafternoon of practice to brush off thecobwebs from the winter and to see ifwe could gel as a team.

The racing schedule set by the PYCcalled for a practice race plus two realraces Monday, two2+ races Tuesday, adistance race Wednesday and two moreraces on Thursday. All of this was, ofcourse, condition dependent.

And the conditions were glorious.There was wind throughout the event.We never had less than 10 knots to start

a race. Conditions were typically lighterat the first gun of the day and then builtinto the mid to upper teens as the after-noon progressed.

The fleet was divided up into sixclasses with four starts: 24s, 28Rs, 31s,and Open (which included four of thenew 31-1Ds,three 25Cs, a couple of 28swith aluminum masts and three 27s).

At the end of the first day we had a1,2 and Glenn Howell had a 2,1. It wasobvious that he was our closest competi-tion. By the end of the 2nd day of racingwe’d completed 5 races and our teamhad good results. We now had posted a1,2,1,1,1 and Glenn Howell, our closestcompetitor, had a 2,1,2,2,2. Although weweren’t getting our best starts, we didhave very good speed, both pointing andfooting, so we were able to get out intoclear air and cover our competition.

On Wednesday we had a fun longdistance race, which took us out into theGulf, west to Alabama waters and backagain. The course measured 46.6 milesand actually sailed about 60 miles. Theentire first half of the race turned out tobe upwind! Going to Pensacola Pass toget to the Gulf was in light to moderatebreeze in flat water. It wasn’t until wewere going through the pass that wefinally caught most of the 28s and all ofthe 24s. Meanwhile, the four 31-1Dswere coming on strong behind us. Oncein the Gulf the wind and seas started

building. By the time we got to the turn-ing mark at Perdido Pass, the wind wasup to 20+ knots, which made for an exhil-arating ride back to Pensacola at 16-18knots with occasional bursts to 20 and21. I’ve already got this one penciled asone of the top sails of the 2005 season!We were the first 31 to finish and werethird over the line. In one of those turnsof serendipity, no sooner had we crossedthe finish line, dowsed the spinnaker andturned upwind to sail home than the out-haul let go with a bang. And in the midstof trying to sort that out the lashing forthe tack of jib chaffed through and the jibwent skyward!

The last day of racing, Thursday,gave us two more great races for aseries total of eight races. We continuedour close racing with Glenn Howell butrealized the night before that we were incontention for the overall trophy. Wesailed conservatively and managed toget another 2,1 which not only clinchedthe 31 class but also the overall trophyfor the National Championship.

Glenn Howell finished second in the31 class. Russ Kincaid finished secondin the Open Class.

Good wind, good competition, goodrace committee work, good parties andsocializing ... All the ingredients for anoutstanding regatta.

Sponsored by the Beverly Yacht Club inMarion, the Bluewater Sailing Club ofBoston and the Royal Hamilton AmateurDinghy Club of Paget, Bermuda, the 645-nautical mile race takes off Friday, June17, with the Multihull division sailing oneday later on Saturday, June 18.

The Multihull division is new thisyear, as is the Double-Handed class. Inaddition, the organizers will be offering atrophy to the first all-female crew to fin-ish first overall on corrected time.

For the first time, the OrganizingCommittee is providing every boatentered in 2005 with a Globalstartransponder., which will track eachboat’s location and progress during therace as well as the boat’s return to homeport. The GPS transponder is provided atabsolutely no cost to the entrant exceptfor a deposit, refundable on thetransponders return. An internet basedtracking program will show the boats’

positions and can be accessed throughany browser enabling family and friendsto watch the progress of each boatthroughout the race via the internet. Thesystem will also enable the media toreport in real time how the race isunfolding.

According to the official Notice ofRace, the Marion Bermuda Race“encourages the development of blue-water sailing skills on seaworthy yachtsthat can be handled safely offshore withlimited crew.” No yachts with the inten-tion of furthering a “commercial or tradepurpose” are allowed to enter. This isone race best left to the amateur.

In 1997, race organizers added anelectronic navigation class to the race –before that, the Marion Bermuda wasstrictly a celestial navigation race. In2003, organizers allowed an increase inmaximum boat length from 62 feet to 80feet, and they allowed boats to fly anasymmetrical spinnaker.

The 2005 Marion Bermuda is opento yachts of 32 feet minimum in lengthand 80 feet maximum. This year's racehas four divisions: Monohull CelestialNavigation; Monohull ElectronicNavigation; Multihull; and Double-Handed.

Most of the skippers and manycrewmembers attended a day-long“Safety at Sea” seminar at M.I.T. inMarch to bone up on necessary equip-ment and skills for the race. In addition,Tim Queeney, editor of Ocean Navigatormagazine, gave a two-day celestial navi-gation seminar in Marion in May.

2005 Marion-Bermuda Race

In January 2005, Multihulls Magazinecelebrated its 30-year anniversary, mark-ing not only a success story for a maga-zine, which began as an offshoot of theNEMA newsletter but also as a symbol ofthe widespread success and accep-tance of multihull boats into the yachtingmainstream.

In January 1975, NEMA memberCharles Chiodi founded MultihullsMagazine and published the first issue.Charles had been the NEMA newslettereditor for several years, and sensed ademand for information about multihullsfrom a broader market which led him tothis idea. Initially a black and white quar-terly, 2000 copies were printed for thatinaugural issue; today the full-colorglossy magazine has a circulation of50,000 and is published six times a year.

Multihulls Magazine presents abroad spectrum of information aboutracing, cruising, chartering, technicalknow-how, boats for sale, and manyother items of interest to newcomers andexperienced sailors world wide. It hasbecome a bible of the industry, and aforum for readers to both learn aboutand contribute to the varied aspects ofenjoying multihulls.

Animal Worldby Tom LeMers

This April’s one-month southernFlorida cruise on Chat de LaMer,our 26’ open deck cat, took us

through several of the 2004 hurricanedamaged regions. Despite massive plantand property damage, the tropical crea-tures were in abundance and seeminglycarrying on. Some even taking advan-tage of the devastation. Osprey, forexample, build nests in the crowns ofdead trees and it now seems there aremany more nests than on our last visit 16years ago. In some of the worst hitareas, where houses under repair werenot yet reoccupied, the osprey built mas-sive nests on chimneys and cupolas.

Our cruise began in Stuart with avisit to Evelyn’s Connecticut high schoolclassmate. Barbara welcomed us fortropical acclimatization and an introduc-tion to her numerous house lizards andPoodle-cut 20-year-old Persian cat. Welaunched nearby but unfortunately theStuart Municipal Mooring Field was stillclosed awaiting replacement of themooring screws, which were damagedduring the storms, so we had to pay forhard-to-find dockage.

We took Barb day sailing in the St.

Lucie Inlet but brisk winds, balky draw-bridges and narrow channels predomi-nated. She loved the ease of maneuver-ing a catamaran. The number of sunkenand awash sailboats jammed under thebridge pilings and mangroves attested tothe devastation on the East Coast.

Our itinerary was to cross Florida onthe Okeechobee Waterway and do themajority of our cruise on the West Coast.Predictably the wind shifted to the westso we motored the canal to LakeOkeechobee enjoying the locks anddrawbridges. In the canal there was notmuch of a view from the low deck levelof our 26 foot cat. A crow’s nest or atuna tower would be useful if planningthe trip. We spent the first night tied to abollard near the lock on the eastern edgeof the lake.

Surprisingly the lake is surroundedby a 30 foot high levee. We learned thelevee was built to protect the surround-ing countryside from flooding duringsevere storms which can blow the shal-low lake’s water to one side or the other.The lockkeeper told us they survived ’04with only minor levee damage.

Okeechobee to Clewiston we motoredthe rim ditch towards Moore Haven andspent the night tied to a beautiful oldcypress tree near which we saw severalalligators who were quite tame and curi-ous.

The next day we had favorable windand sailed the Waterway towardsLaBelle on the Caloosahatchee River.Just west of the huge dry storage yardnamed “The Glades” we met a mooredliveaboard who told us the gators oftenfollowed his dink so he carried a goodsized rock to toss if the gator got tooclose. He felt they were not really aproblem but the 12-footers worried him abit. Several days later at the Fort MeyersMarina I remarked to the manager, afterseeing some ducklings in the water, thatthey must not have any alligators. Shesaid they do have them but they wait forthe ducklings to get a bit bigger beforetaking every last one.

In Fort Meyers we began our questto see a manatee. All the waterways inFlorida are now littered with “slow- man-atee zone” signs and speed limits.Learning that they prefer warmer waterwe utilized the boats thermometer tosearch out their lair. Going upstreamfrom Fort Meyers we followed tributariesand watched the water temperatureclimb from 64 to 87 degrees at whichpoint a low bridge forced us to anchorthe cat and take to the dink. A one-halfmile row to the discharge of a powerplant got us to the manatee nest but theywere away. Fishermen nearby told usthey had already departed for the Gulf.

Leaving Fort Meyers we wereimpressed with the dolphin and plumebird populations as we headed to Boband Annie’s Boatyard on Pine Island.Fortunately, a Prout owner in LaBellegave us instructions to the yard and hisson, who worked at the Fort MeyersMarina, added some anchorage info.We phoned ahead to ask about a visit forsightseeing purposes and were gra-Evelyn on Chat de La Mer waiting for a lock to open along the canal.

ciously received and offered anovernight if required.

The yard is up a canal within thesouthern tip of Pine Island and the tripinto the yard took us past marina housingdevelopments where we saw the firstserious West Coast hurricane damage.During the months since the hurricanesmost of the buildings and property hadbeen cleaned up and repaired but thefoliage was not so quick. Natural areaswere a jumble of downed trees anddebris including an occasional boat orhouse part. The waterways and canalsalso contained numerous deadheadsand sandbars so navigation was stillimpaired.

The boatyard was a great treat forme and we spent many hours examiningthe various and interesting multihullshauled for maintenance and repair.Bob’s personal project boat is theCrowther Twiggy “Time Bandit” whichhe now owns and is restoring. Theywere incredibly busy with regular cus-tomer’s needs plus storm damage. In afew hours one older fifty-foot tri waslaunched and a brand new fifty footerwas blocked and hauled on the railwayunder Bob’s personal and very caringdirection. Being a Friday afternoon wewere invited for a beer with the crewand enjoyed every moment of our timethere. Bob very obviously enjoys whathe is doing and he inquired about WalterGreene whose yard might be a northernversion of the same image.

From Bob and Annie’s we wastedseveral days seeking marine access to asupermarket in the Sanibel area. Wespent a very windy night in Tarpon Bayadjacent to the Ding Darling Nature pre-serve. I doubt if many sailboats get totheir dock but we were able to land thedink and walk less than a mile to a mar-ket.

In Buck Island harbor on Captiva wehad a pleasant and quiet overnight intheir mangrove lined hurricane holewhich we shared with a dolphin and fourabandoned hulks. Dolphins, manateesand rays were in abundance in the mainharbor. A very engaging fisherman atJensens’s Marina, who used to sailShark catamarans in Colorado, told us

some good fishing tales and suggestedthe harbor at North Captiva for lunch.Captiva was pretty beat up with lots ofbuilding damage and few trees remain-ing. The South Seas Plantation Resortand harbor just north of Buck Island,where we had attended the ColgateSailing School in the early 80’s, was stillclosed for repairs so we tried the fisher-man’s suggestion. Leaving the dock webriefly saw two manatees just off thechannel.

North Captiva island is unbridgedand the harbor and community were adelight. The restaurant and ice creamstore were both open and we indulged.While we were at lunch mom otter andher three kits were helping themselvesto lunch on our boat. When I returned tocheck the lines I found them all in ourport cockpit enjoying a bag of bagels anda pound of smoked Gouda. When I wentaboard for the camera they went overthe side via the stern scoops but immedi-

ately returned for photos and to retrievewhatever crumbs they had hastily leftbehind. Closer examination revealedwet saltwater footprints throughout thegalley and tiny bite marks on many of thesoft food packages. A head of broccolion the table was untouched.

From N. Captiva we headed towardsthe anchorage at Caya Costa State Park,but while negotiating Captiva pass welost our propeller. We decided we couldjust fetch the town of Bokeelia on thenorth end of Pine island where there is alarge marina. We made the 7-mile triparriving at the dock just as the sun set.The marina was the only place in busi-ness as the rest of Bokeelia was stillbeing rebuilt. Their high and dry was abit twisted but was still in use and theyhad the parts we needed.

Caya Costa Island was also in thehighest wind area and all the trees wereeither broken or stripped of foliage. Themangroves were mostly broken off at theroot junction with very few survivingtrees. To add to the mess the park has

decided to eliminate exotic trees and hascut down the majestic Australian pineswhich provided most of the shade.Hiking the interior trails the foliage dev-astation was extensive; similar to whatwe associate with tornado damage inOhio. We did surprise a feral pig andsaw many otter tracks and a tortoise soonce again the animals were adjustingand had survived. Johnson Shoalsanchorage off the ocean side of theisland was open and we took Chat in toinvestigate the anchorage which is avery special spot for boats able to enter.

We pushed on to the town of BocaGrande where we re-provisioned whileenjoying the community and the delightsof Whidden’s Marina. This is a rusticplace built in the early 30s as a fish campfor the millionaires who wintered inBoca. It’s now run by the founder’sdaughter and her family and little hasbeen disturbed in the intervening years.A small pen in the parking lot housessome geese, Ziggie the pig, some rabbitsand cockatoos. The dock is home to an

orchid collection and the store containsanything you might ever want if only youcould find it. The restaurant hasn’t beenopen since the 50s but the tables andchairs are still there and they are think-ing of reopening it. The best amenity isthe outdoor shower. Built out by thedock, you step up into the tile and mirrorlined 6X6’ enclosure with an open airscreened roof and upper walls. In placeof the usual measly home water valveare two massive ball valves whichrelease an LBJ style Texas torrent.Paradise!

Gasparilla Island, which containsthe town of Boca Grande, is also home toa colony of exotic Iguana who the pure-minded Floridians are thinking of disap-pearing.

A gale of warm wind propelled ustoward Naples where we had an excitinginlet entrance after a rough afternoonsail. Naples was almost untouched bythe hurricanes but the old City Marinawas full so we anchored out nearby andtoured the newly refurbished downtownshopping district and Art Center.Barbara joined us for two days ofcamper sailing on Chat. We overnightednear Marco, anchoring among the man-grove islands where we saw two gor-geously pink roseate spoonbills in thefalling light. We had a lot of evening rainand since the wind was on the nose inthe morning we motored back to Naplesencountering four manatees who wentabout their feeding for over 15 minutesas we drifted nearby.

We left the boat in a mega-yachtmarina in Naples while we retrieved thetrailer from Stuart. The next day wepulled the boat at the County ramp whichis one of the prettiest we have used. Thetow back to Yellow Springs with ournewer, quieter van was extra pleasantbut our trailer and boat were hit by ahuge motor home executing an emer-gency lane change on the Interstatenear Orlando. A minor weld was brokenon our trailer and the motor home’s hugebug deflector hit one cat tail leaving aneasily-removed scuff of melted plastic toremind us of the trip. With such minordamage everyone was happy.

Race Legend – ‘87 Bermuda RaceBy Bill Doelger

The race to Bermuda by catama-rans, trimarans and occasionalproas had been going on for more

than a decade in the odd number years.I did my first race in 1977. Ten yearslater, in addition to racing, I was helpingwith the organization of the race.

The official title of the '87 race toBermuda was the Sebago MultihullChallenge. For the first time, this multi-hull race had a title sponsor who provid-ed many extras and publicity that wecould not manage from entry fees. Therewere eight entries including a famoussailor, Walter Greene, on his 50-footcatamaran, Sebago. He was also spon-sored by the Maine based nautical shoecompany of the same name.

Normally, my 35-foot trimaran,Margaret, will have two in crew in addi-tion to me, but for this trip I decided tosail with a crew of just one. My choicewas Tom Bandoni. Back in 1985, I talkedTom into his first Bermuda Race. He andhis wife had just completed their own 37-foot trimaran. It was launched for thefirst time that spring. He agreed to enterit in the race, on the condition that Icome along as crew. It was during thatmaiden journey that Tom discovered hegets sea sick, which made the race pret-ty unpleasant. Time, however, invariablyallows us to remember the best parts ofprior experience; so, thankfully, heagreed to crew for me in this race.

In addition to being a competentsailor, Tom was stronger, younger, andsmarter than me about many things. Forone thing, he knew more than me aboutmotorcycles. This knowledge proved tobe crucial. Without it, we might neverhave started the race, let alone crossedthe finish line.

Gentlemen, Start Your Engines!

The day of the start was spectacular:warm sunny weather with a moderatebreeze. For those who don't know, the

typical starting point of the race isNewport, Rhode Island. Our host for thestart was the Museum of Yachting locat-ed at Fort Adams that guards theentrance to Newport Harbor. It wasthere we had a light breakfast, skippersmeeting, and weather briefing early thatmorning.

Weather is just one of the race'smany challenges. Another is the GulfStream current; Bermuda lies 650 nauti-cal miles directly south south east fromNewport across the Gulf Stream. A thirdis that Bermuda is low on the horizonand surrounded by coral reefs. For me,however, the biggest challenge of thisrace in 1987 was simply getting to thestarting line.

As you might imagine, the key tosuccess in an offshore race is prepara-tion. Because there is no hope of findinga chandlery out there in open water,checking equipment and stockingreplacement parts are essential. Howyou go about preparing is very much areflection of your personality. You mightbe fastidious and organized or cavalierand haphazard. It is hard for me toexplain how I do it, as some people might

watch me and think I make it harder thanit is. In any case, it takes time and Ihabitually run late. That day was no dif-ferent.

Tom and I finished our work withonly two things left to do: take on fueland water. The first trimaran I ownedwent without power for several years; itwas great discipline to sail a boat with-out an engine. But, for the Bermudarace, an engine was required in case ofemergency, as well as to generatepower for the batteries and for the run-ning lights. So, Margaret had an ampleaft cockpit, and the 12 hp diesel enginesat under a cockpit hatch below thecockpit floor.

We said goodbye to family andfriends, and motored over to the GoatIsland Marina. After fueling up, Tom tookthe tiller to steer for the starting line as Ijumped down to take one last look at theengine. The hatch cover was off as wepulled away from the dock. The brightmid day sun shone on the engine andrevealed dripping fuel leaking from a fit-ting. I took a wrench to tighten the boltwhere it was leaking. Though I tight-ened, the leak still did not stop. I tight-

ened a little harder, and the bolt stemsnapped off gushing fuel over theengine. The engine sound changed andTom turned to look at me. I tried to holdthe nut back in place to stop the fuelfrom spraying and to keep the sputteringengine from stopping altogether. Tomknew exactly what happened. "Don’t youknow about banjo bolts?” he asked,“Didn’t you ever own a motorcycle?"

I did once own a motor cycle, but myknowledge of how they worked wasrudimentary. Banjo bolts? I obviouslyhad no clue. Tom, on the other hand, hadowned many motorcycles. He disman-tled and modified them. Here's what Ilearned from Tom: a banjo bolt usuallyattaches fuel lines. It is hollow. Thedesign allows fuel to flow through it. Italso makes it weaker than other bolts.

Here's what Tom learned from me:In 1984, BMW marketed marine enginesand that is what we put in Margaret. Thevery next year they stopped makingthese engines. I knew the right bolt saton a shelf in a New Jersey parts ware-house, but that did not help.

First, we crossed the harbor toanother marina in search of a dieselmechanic and a possible banjo bolt, butthere were no mechanics or parts. Iremembered that there was a dieselrepair shop that used to service BMWmarine engines in the town next toNewport. Thankfully, a couple who hadcome to watch the start showed up atjust the right moment. They drove us tothe repair shop in the next town, but theshop had no bolt. As I started callingaround for parts, the race started with-out us.

Undeterred, Tom decided we wouldmake the part. He grew up working forhis father in an automobile repair shop.As you might guess, Tom was a kind ofmechanical genius. If it moved orworked in some way, Tom could usuallyfix it. So, we drove to a place that soldbolts and found the right size metric bolt.Then we drove to a gas station/repairshop that had a drill press. Tom talked

them into letting him use the drill to hol-low out the bolt and then drill more holesin the stem that let the fuel pass. Back atthe boat, we found Tom's bolt worked!

On Your Mark, Get Set, Nooooooo!The engine started and there was no

leaking. We headed off for the start. Bythis time, the sun had set, but we wereback in the race.

Anyone who sails with me knows Ilike to keep things clean; I often have apaper towel in my hand. Naturally, I wascleaning up the oily engine with a papertowel. Tom looked up just in time to seemy hand pass over the air intake of thechugging engine. Words leapt out of hismouth in warning, but it was too late.The running engine sucked the papertowel out of my hand and the enginecoughed to a stop.

Did I say that another reason I want-ed Tom to sail with me was his tempera-ment? Another person might have doneme great physical harm at this point, butTom was very patient, I think. In anycase, I did not get a wrench planted inmy ear. Instead, he breathed deeply andset to work. If you read the BMW manu-al, you are urged to seek authorized ser-vice if you remove the engine head. Youshould have a torque wrench and tightenthe bolts the specified amount. Gasketsshould be replaced with new ones.

Tom removed the head like he wasdoing surgery. Bits of paper towel sat ontop of the valves, preventing the neces-sary compression that diesel enginesrequire. We had no replacement gas-kets, so Tom carefully cleaned andreused the old ones. The patient camethrough the operation just fine. By thistime, the sky was black and cloudedover. We headed for the start onceagain, with me as far away from theengine compartment as possible!

Narragansett Bay and its entrancewere usually busy with boats comingand going in the daylight hours, but nowthe area was very quiet. We raised thesails, cut the engine and settled down to

a watch routine. There was still a moder-ate wind and the sea had a swell. Ourrace had begun.

The Big FinishInstead of the usual mix of weather

that I had experienced in years past, theweather was rough for the entire trip.Though there was no storm, the windblew steadily; heaping wave on wave asit naturally does at sea. Tom was verysick nearly all the way, but he still stoodhis watches. When there are only two ofyou, you tend to become a bit sleepdeprived. He wore those anti-sea sickpatches, but they took their toll. Afterthe second or third day, he began seeingspiders in the cabin and things on thewaves. Needless to say, the entire trip toBermuda is somewhat of a blur. All Iknow for sure is that we did the trip inone tack, merely changing reefs as thewind dictated.

Though we had begun our raceroughly ten hours after the official start,we somehow caught up to another tri-maran as we approached Bermuda. Theweather had finally turned. It was abeautiful morning. The sea had flattenedand a gentle warm breeze made this partof the world so inviting.Tom had removedhis patches. I had the watch and hadbeen chasing this sailboat for most of it.When we were nearly abreast of them, Iwas able to see that the person onwatch was Joan Greene, WalterGreene’s wife. She urged the crew tocome on deck and race us to the finish,but they had lost interest. Sickness hadtaken its toll among the owner and onecrew.

The difficulties of the pre-race trialsand the ocean crossing soon becamedistant memories, as we glided pastSebago and met up with our sweetheartsunder the Bermuda sun.

“If I might blow my own horn for abit, ... I competed in this race in 1992, fin-ished 7th overall, winning my class(Class IV, up to 40' multihulls) and finish-ing ahead of both larger classes II and III(up to 50' multihulls) by 6 hours and 12hours respectively. Ahead of me wereonly six large Class One 60' fully spon-sored competitors. I was also the firstnon-sponsored competitor to finish.

“The record I set, 16 days, 6 hours

and 45 mn still stands to this day. I amvery proud of this achievement and nowwant to repeat it. Well, maybe to repeat itis a bit ambitious but I definitely want togo through the Race experience again.What I have missed over the interveningyears, while running my business (ATN)and raising a family (3 kids) could best bedescribed as an indefinable sense ofcompetition. Competition against othersailors, yes, but mainly the struggle toovercome the sea and the weather-toprevail against the elements while get-ting the most out of my boat. For thosewho don't know, it's important to realizethat getting to the starting line and beingready to race is the greater part of thestruggle: the Race is the pay back. Towin is the icing on the cake.

“For me, the successful completionof the race is to be satisfied that I per-formed the best I could in the circum-stances. That's what the Race means tome. Let's not forget the technologicalchallenge as well. Sailing is still a sportfull of mechanical challenges and I makemy livelihood solving these mechanicalproblems. But to sum things up, there isa Corinthian spirit which drives me – thedesire to do the best I can with what Ihave. Plus the fact of having (recently)reached the half century mark!

“Since the Race was inaugurated bySir Francis Chichester and BlondieHasler back in 1960-Chichester won it inhis 40' Gypsy Moth II in 40 days)–it hasattracted ever more sophisticateddesigns and much commercial sponsor-ship. In fact it was the second running ofthe race, in 1964, won by the FrenchNaval Officer Eric Tabarly in 27 days,which started the engouement (loveaffair) of the French public and media forsailing and is credited with starting thePlaisance (recreational boating) industryin France which is now the envy of theworld. In 1992, the race was won by the60' Trimaran Fujicolor skippered by LoickPeyron in 10 days 10 hours. By this timethe whole atmosphere of the race hadchanged from one of enthusiastic ama-teurs to a mad scramble among corpora-tions to slap as many logos as possibleon the topsides and sails of the profes-sionally-skippered boats. The prestige ofwinning the STAR made this develop-

ment inevitable, but it eventuallysqueezed out all but those with thebiggest bank account and yachts inexcess of 50 feet.

“The Royal Western Yacht Club ofPlymouth, England, which has organizedthe race from the beginning, decidedafter the 2000 event that a fleet combin-ing amateur and professional sailors wasno longer feasible. The race was put upfor sale and Offshore Events became theorganizers for the professional, 50' and60' maximum, two-class, event in 2004,now known as The Transat. Starting in2005, the Royal Western Yacht Club willrun a mostly amateur race for boats from30'to 50' max LOA, multihull and mono-hulls, known as the STAR.

“A couple of years ago, I purchasedback my winning steed, the 40' trimaranUp My Sleeve (see picture from 1992)and she has since undergone a completerefit by Walter Greene, in his yard inYarmouth, ME. Walter designed the boatin the first place and his talent andexpertise in refurbishing her will makeher as competitive as possible.

“By the time you read this I will havepicked her up and sailed her down toFort Lauderdale, a test run of a mere1,500 miles. After that I will sail her soloto England. The rules require that allboats complete a qualifying voyage of atleast 500 miles-after which they are sub-ject to a safety inspection by the raceorganizers. As you see, it's not a piece ofcake just arriving at the starting line. Therace itself has a rhumb line distance ofabout 2,700 miles but most boats will sailin excess of 3,000 to arrive at Newport.Damn headwinds!”

Two daring Brazilian Hobe catchampions, Beto Pandiani andFelipe Whitaker stopped for a night

in Rockport, MA on May 20 enroute toGreenland in a 20’ open beach catSatellite III. Thanks to the sharp eyes ofNEMA member Tom Grossman, whospotted the boat and took the photos, weare able to report on this incredibleadventure. The expedition, known as“Boreal Route” is the fourth in a series ofextreme feats in open beach cats.

Pandiani began this adventure in1994 with a voyage called “Between theTropics” sailing from Miami to Brazil, viathe Bahamas, Caribbean and AmazonRiver... a 7,000 mile trip that lasted 289days. His second trip in 2000, “AustralRoute”, was a 5-month 4,500-mile jour-ney in two open cats (Pandiani’ team andan Argentinean team) that began in Chilethen around Cape Horn and north to Riode Janiero, Brazil. The third trip, “DrakePassage” began in Chile then crossedthe treacherous Drake Passage culmi-nating in Antartica.

The fourth and final trip, “BorealRoute” runs from May to August, 2005,departing from New York and going toNewport, passing through the Acadia

National Park in Maine, Nova Scotia,Magdalen Islands, Newfoundland,Labrador Peninsula and Nuuk, the capi-tal of Greenland, until its final point inDisco Island in Greenland, a total of 5,000kilometers. Rockport was a scheduledstop on the trip.

Satellite III is equipped with the lat-est high-tech equipment including asatellite telephone and notebook com-puter for receiving and sending email.The Hobie Cat was constructed and cus-tomized for the trip by the German com-pany Eagle Cat (www.eagle-cat.com).

There was no support team forPandiani’s first two adventures. On thethird trip, Kotic II, a 52-foot schooneraccompanied the team across the DrakePassage to Antarctica. For the currenttrip, a support motor home is followingthe team as it heads up the coast. Kotic IIwill provide support during the remainingportion of the trip, in the arctic sea. Aftercompletion of the trip, Pandiani will bethe first Brazilian to sail the coast of theAmericas in an open boat.
