Will an egg float?Take a minute to record in your science notebook your predictions. When you are finished with your prediction, move to the next slide.

Place your cup on a flat, sturdy surface.

Pour water into the cup
![Page 6: Egg experiment](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081414/54ba469b4a795954468b45c6/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Place the egg in the cup of water
![Page 7: Egg experiment](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081414/54ba469b4a795954468b45c6/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Take a moment to record your observations. Is the egg floating? Think about what would happen if we changed the amount of water in the cup…do you think the egg would float then? When you are finished, move to the next slide.
![Page 8: Egg experiment](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081414/54ba469b4a795954468b45c6/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Drain some of the water from the cup and observe. Does the amount of water change the floatation of the egg? Make notes in your science notebook.

Remove the egg from the glass. Think about what we could do to make the egg float. List your ideas in your notebook.
![Page 10: Egg experiment](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081414/54ba469b4a795954468b45c6/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Get out your salt.
![Page 11: Egg experiment](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081414/54ba469b4a795954468b45c6/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Pour some salt into the glass. Do you think the salt will make a difference?
![Page 12: Egg experiment](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081414/54ba469b4a795954468b45c6/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Place the egg back in the glass and record your observations.
![Page 13: Egg experiment](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081414/54ba469b4a795954468b45c6/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Remove the egg again and pour a large amount of salt into the cup (at least 6 tablespoons).
![Page 14: Egg experiment](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081414/54ba469b4a795954468b45c6/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Stir the salt and water until the salt is completely dissolved. Before moving to the next slide think about what will happen when we put the egg in this new mixture.
![Page 15: Egg experiment](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081414/54ba469b4a795954468b45c6/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Place the egg back in the cup and observe. The egg floats!

The egg is now floating at the top of the cup. Record your observations and move to the next slide.

Why did the egg finally float? Think about what we have learned about
density in class and come up with a theory as to why the egg floated when put in salt water.
Be specific in your explanation and use the observations/data you have gained from this experiment.
Record your theory in your notebook. Feel free to use drawings to help support your ideas.
