O group cohesion can be affected by deviant actions undertaken by members of a particular group

O essentially actions that are deemed negative will lower perceived team cohesion.

O Effects that poor team cohesion has on team performance outcomes

O both social and task orientated cohesion was clearly associated to successful performance outcomes

O A 1996 women’s volleyball team that was predicted to win gold in fact ended up 7th due to internal conflict before the competition

O It was previously thought that the correlation between social cohesion and performance outcomes was zero

O Professional sporting team results are often assessed by means of a particular player’s statistics

O coaching styles and it’s effect on team cohesion

O positive feedback and avoids autocratic decision making

O female athletes perceive their coach to be more democratic and positive while male athletes find their coaches to be more autocratic in nature

OSo what does this all mean?

O Are the most successful team are the ones who never forget to enjoy themselves?

O Perhaps it would be beneficial to provide coaches with equal amount of training or education in establishing team cohesion.

O poor team cohesion can negatively affect or delay the development of motor skills

O Does too much positive team cohesion negatively affect performance?
