VIIRS Aerosol EDR Product
• ~6km resolution– 8x8 ~750m pixels
• Retrieved: – AOT – Angstrom Exponent– Suspended Matter Type
• Many Quality Flags: – Cloud (incl. adjacent)– Glint and other geometry– Input data quality
• Retrieval is based on LUTs generated with 6S
• Heritage is MOD09 Surface Reflectance
• Over-ocean similar to MOD04– Fine-coarse mixture retrieved
explicitly
• Over-land uses different aerosol models– Single model (fine+coarse) is
retrieved via LUT
Aerosol EDR VAOOO

Status of Aerosol Cal/Val
• Aerosol EDR is sum of Parts:– VIIRS SDR
radiances/reflectances: These are still Beta, Provisional status will be considered later this fall
– VIIRS Cloud Mask: basic tuning complete, product is still Beta
• Aerosol EDR is recently partially advanced to ‘Beta’ maturity:– Global AOD– Over-ocean Aerosol Size
Parameter– NOT over-land Aerosol
Size Parameter– NOT Suspended Matter

VIIRS and MODIS show broad agreement in large features
![Page 12: Edward Hyer Naval Research Laboratory JCSDA Symposium 11 October 2012](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062323/56815b13550346895dc8bf1f/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)

VIIRS and MODIS have different cloud screening– VIIRS is still being characterized. Both products must avoid clouds for accurate retrieval.

VIIRS and MODIS show significant differences over land
![Page 14: Edward Hyer Naval Research Laboratory JCSDA Symposium 11 October 2012](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062323/56815b13550346895dc8bf1f/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
VIIRS vs. AERONET AOD over ocean
• Best QA only• Low mean bias• Not enough data to
clearly diagnose bias at higher AOD
![Page 15: Edward Hyer Naval Research Laboratory JCSDA Symposium 11 October 2012](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062323/56815b13550346895dc8bf1f/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
VIIRS vs. AERONET AOD over land
• Best QA only• Significant positive
mean bias• Positive bias for all AOD
ranges observed
![Page 16: Edward Hyer Naval Research Laboratory JCSDA Symposium 11 October 2012](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062323/56815b13550346895dc8bf1f/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
AOD Pre-processing for DA
MODIS• NRL & University of North
Dakota developed method starting with MOD04 Level 2 data
• Extensive filtering for cloud, surface, etc.
• Empirical Correction• Prognostic Uncertainty
Model• Now a product produced in
NRT at NASA LANCE
NPP VIIRS• Method under
development• Currently only filters
using built-in QA• No corrections• Aggregated to NAAPS 1-
degree resolution

![Page 20: Edward Hyer Naval Research Laboratory JCSDA Symposium 11 October 2012](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062323/56815b13550346895dc8bf1f/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
NAVDAS-AOD Testbed
Compare forecast with obs to evaluate propagation of differences
MODIS obs do not show high AOD over ocean west of Hawaii
![Page 21: Edward Hyer Naval Research Laboratory JCSDA Symposium 11 October 2012](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062323/56815b13550346895dc8bf1f/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)

Much More Work To Do
• Quantitative Evaluation of NAAPS-MODIS vs NAAPS-MODIS+NPP analysis and forecast
• Determination of impact on forecast error of including over-ocean VIIRS AOD
• Construction and evaluation of prognostic error model for VIIRS AOD
• Construction of higher-resolution products
![Page 23: Edward Hyer Naval Research Laboratory JCSDA Symposium 11 October 2012](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062323/56815b13550346895dc8bf1f/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
