Educational GoalsTo improve the students awareness of natural geological processes.
To facilitate students ability to connect natural phenomena and its impact on their surrounding community.
To have learning be an interactive, collaborative and explorative process rather than being passive and disengaging.
To inspire students to think critically about the social and natural world around them.
Values, Purposes, and Assumptions
Children are inherently excellent learners; yet they need a direction and an organization to their learning which we, as teachers, can provide.
The earth has intrinsic value outside of pure scientific inquiry and exploring its features is a worthy endeavor.
Education should be based on interaction and collaboration and critical thought must be applied to all subjects.
Each individual will develop in their own ways and at separate times- we are not interested in measuring development in a standardized way.
Overall LookThe purpose of these activities is to get students involved in the learning
Students who are not motivated to learn might find hands on learning more captivating
All of the activities are related to materials taught to them prior.
Evidence of LearningThey ask provocative questions.
Able to answer questions about the basic principles of faults and volcanoes.
Through these they show a general knowledge of geology and a curiosity to know more.
Narrative evaluations (similar to the evaluation we have at UCSC ) will be given to the parents of students as well as their teachers
Teacher Roles and Limitations
Our roles as teachers is to present to students what we know and to serve as facilitators to their learningWe hope to facilitate learning by presenting
knowledge to students in many different medias and giving them the opportunity to learn material in a “hands on” approach.
Our roles are tied closely to the public education system in which our students are located and we don’t strain very far from that model of education.
Learning Activities
Video: Bill Nye The Science Guy “Plate Tectonics”Purpose: Help the students understand the theory and concept of tectonic plates visually.
Hands on: Shoe box filled with SandPurpose: To show students the process of continents shifting and separating from Pangea
VISUAL/INTERACTIVE/FUN!!!
Creativity: Cutting out shapes of continentsPurpose: To physically use hands to move continents around and see how they shifted
Students will do presentations on the last day to show what they learned on the field trip and the day before.
Questions asked of the instructors and the students as they do their presentations will demonstrate growing curiosity.
Field Trip #1: Pescadero State BeachSince Pescadero students live near the coast line, one class session would take place on the beach.
Outside classroom environment makes it easier for students to understand the lecture because they are surrounded by it
Also to have activities that involve examining ocean sediments and rocks
And another field trip…The Pinnacles
Students will be taken to the Pinnacles located South of Hollister
At the Pinnacles, students will get to see an actual dormant volcano and the history behind it.
The Pinnacles were once part of an active volcano millions of years ago. It has split in half due to continental drift.

Design Limitations• Obviously we are limited in regards to our funding and
how much time we are given to work with the students
We sacrificed arts/ humanities subjects in favor of a scientific subject because of time constraints
Two topics were picked in order to give the students more time with the concepts and to ensure they understand to the best of their abilities.
