The main tasks of the EMER: to guarantee the expedient and effective

development of education research, youth and language policies and

the high level and competitiveness of research and development activities.

The Estonian educational system consists of state, municipal, public and private educational institutions. There are currently 589 schools in Estonia.

Today's education in Estonia is divided into General education

Estonian pre- school education is provided in schools, where the child will stay in steadily advancing classes until they complete it and move on to secondary school. Pre-School prepares children for the feature of the basic education system.

Grades 1-9 (Basic school)

Length of program in years: 9 Age level from: 7 to: 16 At the end of basic educational there are free final examinations: Mother tongue ( Russian /Estonian) Mathematics Can be chosen ( biology, chemistry, physics, geography, history or

foreign language)

After satisfactory completion of the study programme and passing the basic school final examinations, the students obtain the Basic School Leaving Certificate.

Length of program in years: 3 Age level from: 16 to: 19

Some gymnasiums provide general education, others have a specific focus.

The four traditional branches are:

humanities education (specialising in Classical languages, such as English, German and France)

mathematical-scientific education

economical and social-scientific education (students are required to study economics, social studies and business informatics)

gymnasium for adults ( full-time study, part-time study, extern)

At the end of secondary educational there are five graduation final examinations:

Mother tongue ( Russian /Estonian) Mathematics English language Can be chosen Can be chosen ( biology, chemistry, physics, geography, history or foreign language). After passing the secondary school final

graduation examinations, the students obtain the Secondary School Leaving Certificate which gives access to higher education.

Prepares the students for entering the workforce. The basic categories of education are: IT worker Electrician Process worker Forest worker Catering worker

Students obtain a Certificate on Acquiring Secondary Vocational Education Based on Basic Education

Students who have completed the post-secondary vocational programme for secondary vocational education on the basis of secondary school education will, upon graduation, obtain a Certificate on Acquiring Secondary Vocational Education Based on Secondary Education .

Academic higher education in Estonia is divided into three levels:

Bakalaureus level studies (duration of studies is 3 to 4 years.)

Master studies level (duration of studies is 2 years.)

Doctoral studies level (duration of studies is 3 to 4 years.)

The main aim of the bakalaureus study programmes is to develop theoretical knowledge and skills in the selected work area and its completion gave the right to work in a position requiring high-level specialist qualifications.

Graduates who have completed their studies will be awarded the bakalaureusekraad which is certified with a diploma.

Magister study is the second stage of higher education during which specialised knowledge and skills are further developed and knowledge and skills necessary for independent work and pursuing studies at the doctoral level are acquired. The main purpose of the magister studies is to train a specialist with advanced theoretical knowledge.

Graduates who have completed their studies will be awarded a diploma certifying the completion of the respective integrated programme.

Doktor study is the highest stage of higher education. Its purpose is to acquire knowledge and skills necessary for independent research, development or professional creative work. The general admission requirement for doktor study is a magistrikraad or a corresponding qualification.

Graduates who have completed their studies will be awarded a doktorikraad which is certified with a diploma. The degree is a research degree for which candidates have to defend a doctoral thesis - independent scientific research or creative work.
