Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) 5 – 8 September

Seventy five Form One and Two students from St Joseph’s Private School joined The SEED16. The SEED16, a collaborative effort between the Kuching Chapter of the Sarawak Catholic Teachers’ Guild (SCTG) and the Empowered Ministry of St. Joseph’s Cathedral, was held successfully from the 10th until 12th September 2016 at the ACCPC, St. Joseph Cathedral, with approximately 400 Form One and Two student participants from various secondary schools in the Kuching Division. This three-day programme was indeed a fun-filled and enriching experience, realized through a series of activities of different nature but being united under the theme of spiritual development. The participants’ zeal, enthusiasm and engagement were indeed very encouraging. Ñ

An ice-breaker marked the launching of the programme on Day 1. The praise and worship slots laid a revitalizing start for each session. Various performances by the Skit Team were simply amazing – participants engrossed in the world of sign language with inspirational MTV as background.
Two sessions that were religious in nature were arranged. One was the Saturday community mass at the St. Joseph’s Cathedral and the other was an “Adoration and Ministering” slot as part of the concluding session on Day 3. Two activities were scheduled at night. The first was the screening of a movie entitled “Confessions of a Prodigal Son” and the second was Family Nite - a family bonding time with a potbless and fellowship as well as various group performances by the participants. Ñ

A range of inspirational talks with intriguing teen-related topics built on a continuum along the theme of the Prodigal Son was lined up - “The Story,”, “The Departure”, “The Good Life”, “The Broken”, “Regret, Realization and the Return”, “The Homecoming” and “The Restoration”. The last talk “The Restoration” was the highlight that ended the three-day programme aptly. Among the five areas identified for restoration – Family, Friends, School, God/Church and Self whereby Self topped the list, followed by family. All sessions ran smoothly and accordingly. The
efficiency that was made a reality due to cooperation and team spirit was really astonishing. Most importantly, a journey of self-discovery was made possible for the participants. A resounding accomplishment for the 2016 Seed 16 organising committee – job well done indeed and the applause is deservingly yours! Ο

Thirty two Form Four students from St Joseph’s Private
School joined 206 students from other schools for their
Sacrament of Confirmation at St Joseph’s Cathedral.
The sacrament was administered within the Mass by
Archbishop John Ha, the Archbishop of Kuching with
the help of Fr Felix Au, Fr Alvin Ng, SJ and Fr Francis
Lim, SJ. The boys were smartly dressed in white shirts
and maroon ties while the girls were resplendent in their
white dresses and veils.

Nineteen Form Four Catholic
students went for their pre-confirmation
recollection on 31 August 2016 at Greccio
Retreat House, 19th Mile, Kuching-Serian
Road.
The recollection was facilitated by
Fr Alvin Ng, SJ, Mr Benedict Lo, Fr Francis
Lim, SJ and Ms Sarah Marimuthu.
Apart from the Life in the Spirit
Seminar by the Bread of Life Community last
August, this was another good opportunity for
our students to prepare well for their
Sacrament of Confirmation on 9 September
2016.
The day started with registration
at the school chapel. The students were then
informed on the spot that they would be
going for a time away at Greccio Retreat
House. They had no idea that they were
going there because they thought they
would have the recollection in school.
Energisers as ways to sprite up
the participants were carried out by Mr
Benedict Lo and Ms Sarah Marimuthu. Ñ

The participants were asked at the
beginning to reflect on what confirmation is
to them. Questions were posed to them, for
example, Why be confirmed? What is my
response to this sacrament? What do I want
from this? How do I want to follow the
Lord?
The participants were also led in a
meditative prayer using songs of Taize,
followed by a gospel imaginative
contemplation based on Peter walking on
the water (Mt 14:23-33). Ñ

A delicious lunch and morning
break were provided by the caring
Franciscan Sisters of Sarawak who run the
retreat house.
A session on what it means to be a
prophet, priest and king (PPK) in terms of
Jesus’ ministry using video clips from the
Lord of the Ring followed after lunch. The
participants were asked to reflect on their
roles, skills / gifts and what they have to
give up to fulfil their roles.
Each was given two sets of paper
strips to write on one, things they value now
and the other, areas they feel they might be
called to do as PPK now.
They were asked to look at what
they wrote and see which ones that conflict
or complement each other.
They then were told to place those
they did not want or cannot offer yet in the
Bin and those they want to fulfil and offer
in the Basket which was offered up at the
concluding Mass.
Towards the end, an affirmation
and missioning exercise was carried out
where the participants wrote for their
personal use actual steps that they would
take to be a committed disciple of Jesus. Ñ

The recollection concluded with a missioning Mass. The Confirmation candidates
were sent forth to bear the light of Christ and be salt of the earth through the presentation of a
tea light candle and a pinch of salt in a small paper box each. Ο

The Form Four Class of 2016 experienced our fourth retreat together at Matang Wildlife Centre. One with nature and one with each other, we spent three days and two nights together in fellowship and fun. On Wednesday, 24 July 2016, the classes left for the natural wonders of the local wildlife. After a short bus ride, we reached the centre and settled in: the girls at the longhouse and the boys at the campsite. A short tour of the place introduced the students to the work done at the facility. Ñ

The next day, the contingent set out for their hike up Gunung Serapi, an eight-kilometre hike. Unfortunately, the hike could not be finished because of fallen trees that blocked the path. Instead, the students enjoyed the cool relief of the flowing stream. During the camp, we learnt about each other, the world, and ourselves. We had the time to reflect on our lives and the impact they bring. By the time we got back on Friday, we had all grown closer to each other and to our true selves. Surely this is Education Beyond the Ordinary. Ο Written by Germaine Cassandra (F4ScPhi)

On 18 August 2016, the Form One students of St Josephís Private School had their educational field trip to Matang Wildlife Centre and Damai Central. Each of the five classes was accompanied by two teachers. The students gathered at the school foyer at 7.25 am for the singing of the state anthem and the reciting of the daily prayer. After Fr Francis made a short speech and Fr Stephen said a prayer for all those going on the trip, the students boarded their buses with much enthusiasm. At Matang Wildlife Centre, the students were divided into three groups, with 1A on their own, 1B and 1C making up the second group, and 1D and 1E in the third group. After a short briefing by the Matang Wildlife Centre staff, the three groups were led by their respective tour guides along forest trails to see animals such as orang-utans, hornbills, gibbons, peacocks, porcupines and crocodiles. After the enjoyable and educational walk, the students had lunch under some shady huts by a river at the wildlife centre. Ñ

Following this, the students boarded the buses once more and headed to Damai Central. Upon arrival, they got into their respective groups of about 18 to begin the dodgeball matches. The first four teams were instructed to get ready while the others had some time to visit the convenience stores, souvenir shops and the cafeteria while awaiting their turn to play. Each team was determined to win and worked hard to keep the ball from hitting them. When the matches ended and the excitement died down, everyone headed back to school. The students went home exhausted but contented and a bit more knowledgeable than before. All in all, it was a satisfying experience and they are looking forward to future field trips. Ο
