    Foreword by theFounder and Chairman

Like you, I believe that every child

matters. That so many childrenaround the world still lack the access

to a decent education is intolerable.

    Providing children with an exemplary

education is not a matter of

    processing forms through the same

    educational template. Nor can we

    tackle the problems governments

face all around the world if we do

    not address their individual needs

    and understand where they are

in their journey to deliver better

    quality education.

We know what is involved because

we have been running a successful

education company for over 50 years.

    We have advised governments,

    corporations, schools and parents on

    delivering the high quality education

    that is right for them.

    GEMS Education Solutions is a

    specialist education consultancy

    providing strategy, consulting and

    programme implementation across

the education sector. As part of GEMS

    Education, GEMS Education Solutions

draws upon the resources of the

    groups global school network and

    educational expertise.

Demand for our services is high in

India, East Asia and Africa, as well as

in the USA, UK and Eastern Europe.

    Governments want to raise standards

of education but cannot move fast

enough to meet demand. This is

where we can help. The challenge

can only be met by creating an

    environment in which private and

    public sectors work in partnership.

    GEMS uniquely enables parents to

choose a school and curriculum suitedto their personal needs. More than

99% of students at our private schools

with the lowest fees have gone to

    university. These are schools where

the annual tuition fee is $1500.

    The results speak for themselves.

GEMS students have gone to a dozen

of the top 15 universities in the world

and 36 of the top 50 universities in the

    United States.

We believe that a quality education is

    about Ad Vitam Paramus preparing

for life. The GEMS approach to

learning is one which focuses not

only on academic excellence but also

    on helping students develop their

    character, values, personal leadership

and the spirit of enterprise necessary

for them achieve their full potential

    as global citizens.

GEMS values-driven education isexpressed through our four core

values which are woven into every

    curriculum oered by GEMS schools

and are at the core of our DNA:

    World Citizenship

    Empowering students with a

    global and local perspective

    Universal Values

    Accepting that we are all

    dierent, recognising that

    we are all the same

    Leadership

    Developing each students

    individuality and entrepreneurial

    spirit to discover their potential

    Forward Thinking

Our educational programmeshelp students to become exible

    thinkers able to question existing

    thinking, adapt and meet the

    demands of the future

    Through GEMS four core values

GEMS schools are heavily focused on

    philanthropy. Each school has their

    own charitable activities that fall

    under the Varkey GEMS Foundation.

    100 underprivileged children will

    benet for every student enrolled

at a GEMS school. We are honoured

to have former U.S. President Bill

Clinton as the honorary Chair of the

    Varkey GEMS Foundation.

GEMS started as a small family run

business. We are now a multinational

    company with global reach and

reputation but our approach is based

on the simple principle of providing

access for all young people to better

    schooling. GEMS Education is about

    making education accessible to

    communities around the world.

    Thats why we are dierent.

    Sunny Varkey

    UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador

    for Education Partnerships

No country will prosper in the 21st century withoutgreat schools. GEMS is in the business of buildingand managing great schools. There are other consultancy

companies who can advise on what

to do but they lack the delivery

experience to know how it should

be done. And there are delivery

    organisations who know what

to do but they miss the bigger

picture. And then there is GEMS

    Education Solutions.

Not only do we have deep strategic

capability but we also run high

quality schools. As a result, we

    forge the powerful link between

    strategy and implementation. This

    embeds and sustains the necessary

    transformation to raise standards

and extend high quality teachingand learning across a region. The

    GEMS dierence means that national

    strategy, school organisation,

    The Issues We Tackle

Access & EqualityWhere an educational system is

    emerging, a structural overhaul is

required to ensure that every child is

    given access to education regardless

of gender, religion, race or creed.

Prioritising CapitalIn countries with varying degrees

    of socioeconomic wealth, the goal

    for government is to prioritise

spend. It is also essential to

    ensure resources are distributed

    fairly for students and within

    communities, treating rich and

    poor proportionately to their needs,

checking that rural schools as well

    as urban schools receive appropriate

    resources. Research has indicated

that investing in education is good

for a countrys GDP, but countries

    often nd themselves making

    the wrong investment choices.

Empowering LeadershipThe quality of teaching inside an

education system is key to delivering

    high quality education. The best

    educational systems in the world

attract high level candidates and the

    teaching profession is positioned as

a desirable career path. We work in

all areas of recruiting, training and

    incentivising high quality teachers.

Investment PrioritiesNew technologies are highly relevant

for our schools so we take care to

invest in the right ones. In a digital

    world of bewildering choice we

help you decide what to buy, what

to use for free through scraping

content from the bin and how to

    ensure your teachers and learners

    get the most from technology.

We use our experience of running

    highly successful schools in nine

    countries to deliver opportunities

for all. To achieve this, we provide

private education at a wide range

    of fee structures making education

    more aordable for more children.

    Through the Varkey GEMS

    Foundation and our partnerships

with other charities and public sector

bodies we seek to provide access for

    more children around the world.

Travelling the long path to delivering excellent educationaloutcomes requires a key understanding of your countryseducational challenges and goals and selecting a partnerwho can best address these issues.

    13

Governments want to raise standards of education but many in the developing world cannot move fast

enough to meet demand of a booming and undereducated global population. Whilst in the developed worldthere is an anxiety over global competitiveness and the changing role of education in society. This is where

we can help as education experts.

The challenge can only be met by creating an environment in which private and public sectors work in partnership.

Delivering excellent educational outcomes requires a clear understanding of the unique educational challenges

in each case. Some education problems prove persistent and cross-cultural while some are specic to a district,

municipality or country. Some of the problems our clients face include:

    EQUALITY

Around 67 million children do not have access to primary school

education and another 72 million miss out on secondary school

    education (ProLiteracy).

About 17% of the worlds adults 796 million people still lack basic

    literacy skills. UNESCO (2011)

Students assigned to high value-added teachers are more likely to go to

college, earn higher incomes, and less likely to be teenage mothers. On

average, having such a teacher for one year raises a childs cumulative

lifetime income by $50,000 (equivalent to $9,000 in present value at

    age 12 with a 5% interest rate).(Harvard University Study 2012)

We connect our knowledge and expertise to your desireto improve your educational systems.

We understand that finding your path to improvementsrequires a partner with a deep specialist knowledge ofeducation and access to international best practice.

    APPROACH

United NationsEducational, Scientific andCultural Organizationelecting the right approach

We nd that for every improvement

    rogramme the balance between

he bottom up approach - building

    nvolvement but risking wide

    ariations in interpretation and

op down - leading to more

    ontrol by the primary stakeholders

    ut risking disengagement

    hroughout the organisation

needs to be nely judged. We

elp you develop an approach to

    mplementing reforms which

    will t with your organisations

ulture as well as allow you to

    chieve your strategic goals.

ngaging stakeholdersoo often an idea which seems

reat in the Principal or Ministers

ce, or the District workshop, fails

    o be implemented successfully.

his is often because the people

    most responsible for delivery were

    ot involved. Engaging teachers,

    arents and pupils in designing

    nd supporting the changes

equired is crucial to this process.

Focus on evidenceThe ability to identify and combine

the right interventions in the right

way is one of the most powerful

    weapons in the educators armoury.

Our research and evidence teams will

be alongside you at each step to assist

you in making the most of this tool.

Sustainable change andcapacity buildingSustainable change requires strong

    and committed leadership which

will advocate for change in bad times

as well as good. Just as important is

the ability to ensure local capacity

    is developed, rather than drained,

by the change. This is why we useapproaches such as train-the-trainer

    which empower individuals on site.

Culturally attunedapproachesOur experience in working with so

    many dierent countries allows

us to understand how to put local

    context and culture rst. Whilst

    understanding and sharing

    excellent practice from highly

    achieving institutions in other

    countries or sectors is important,

we guide you to develop a str ategy

that best ts your local context.

Helping you takethe next stepOur incisive diagnostics and expert

    educators help you understand

exactly where you stand across the

    range of your dierent departments

    and services. More importantly,

they will consult with you to help

you identify the crucial next steps.

We have spent 50 years establishing an approach to running highly successful schools by focusing the

ramework for school eectiveness - educational excellence operational eectiveness and client andustomer care. This approach enables us to produce solutions based on the key component of knowing

what works and transposing it to meet your specic needs. We undergo a strategic review of your current

    School Turnaround Case Study:

    Warren Harding HighSchool, Bridgeport,Connecticut, USA

    Through a partnership with

    GEMS, Warren Harding High

    School has made signicant

    strides in key areas. Key

initiatives were implementedthat transformed the schools

    learning environment, the

    cornerstone of the inaugural

    year of Hardings comprehensive

    improvement plan.

    The positive school climate and

    its emphasis on high student

    expectations, coupled with new

    teaching strategies and practices

    introduced through intensive

sta training, sets the stage for

    the curricular/instructional focus

    of the plans remaining phases.

    The attendance rate improved

    dramatically, a direct result of

    several measures put into place.

    The 2010-2011 school year ended

    with an overall attendance rate

    of approximately 69%. In October

2011, the attendance rate hit 92%

the highest in all of Bridgeport.

    Our students are excited

    by the changes that weve

    undertaken, and theyre excited

    to see more changes happen.

This is not just an experiment

for them, this is their lives. I

    Abu Dhabi EducationCouncil ContinuedProfessional Development

    In February 2012, GEMS began

    work on a Transformation and

    Professional Development project

with ADEC. GEMS are using tried

    and tested methods to diagnose,

    design and deliver a professional

    development programme which

    will provide targeted, relevant

    and needs-based professional

    development focusing on building

    school-level leadership and

    capacity to transform the way

    leaders lead and teachers teach.

    GEMS cluster model of delivery

    supports schools from low to

    high capacity and capability.

    The Cluster Teams are supported

by a central team of specialists

    providing expert guidance and

    centralised training opportunities;

    this ensures that resources are

    shared and training standards

across each of the cluster schools

    are improved throughout the life

    of the contract.

    Our professional development

    oer is designed to permanently

    transform the landscape of

    professional development within

    individual schools and establish

    a new, sustainable model. The

    move towards a sustainable model

    can be achieved through this

    simple process:

    Parent Engagement

At GEMS Education, we believethat parents are the key to releasing

    the potential of their children.

    Growing research shows that

    established parent engagement in

    schools is correlated with scholastic

    achievement, social development

    and the development of transferable

life skills. For the US market, GEMS

    Education Solutions has developed

    the Parent Engagement and

    Partnership Program (PEPP) which is

    a tailored framework that supports

    schools to increase the ambition,

    access and achievement of high

    need students through improving

    the quality of parent engagement

    and home school partnerships. The

GEMS strategy of hiring the right professionalsand supporting them with the latest technologicaladvancements is a model for progressive education.

Anoop Gupta, Global Head of Education, Research and Strategy, Microsoft

    By deploying e-learning technology

GEMS can provide a gateway to global

    knowledge and an eective channel

    to reach out across communities.

    How does it work?

The system works with a two-way

    transmission of live video footage

between a teacher in a studio and

    multiple classrooms in remote parts

of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

This can be done using a broadband

    connection or Very Small Aperture

    Terminal (VSAT) satellite technology.

    The technology enables master

    teachers or guest lecturers at

the studio to appear on virtual

    classroom screens alongside

    relevant digital educational content.

Students can interact both with the

teacher and with each other through

    the virtual classroom interface.

    What are the advantages?

High Quality Learner Experience 100% synchronous learning

    experience maximizes

learning potential Peer interaction among students

    transcends even a classroom

learning experience Students from diverse locations

    share and learn from each

    Lower Delivery Costs

    Flexible, scalable low-

    cost technology No additional infrastructure

nternational research demonstrates that investment in early years yields major long term social and

conomic growth. Developed by a world renowned early years specialist, Little GEMS International is aespoke programme for children aged 0-5 that looks at the brain and stem systems to develop a curriculum

hat enhances cognitive development through movement, music, world languages and digital learning,

iving children a head start in life.

GI methodology draws upon a range

    f research and practice including

    he High Scope Pre-School study

which analysed the eect of a high-

    uality, active learning programme

or 3- and 4-year-olds. At age 27, the

    rogram group had signicantly

    igher monthly earnings, higher

    ercentages of home ownership,

    igher levels of schooling completed

    and signicantly fewer arrests. The

    LGI approach establishes a warm,

    caring and structured environment

    that provides everything a child

    needs food, protection, support,

    love, care, encouragement,

    challenge, engagement, discipline

    and learning. LGIs specially

    designed curriculum and bespoke

    programmes oer high quality

    education which benet the

    childs all round development

    and learning. These foundations

    have a lifelong eect. Research

    indicates that consistency and

    security of attachment are extremely

    important for the development of

children. At LGI, each child has a

    key person who understands his

    or her developmental needs.

Development in cognitive ability (measured by vocabularyand drawing tests) in the early years was highly predictive ofubsequent achievement, showing a strong relationship with
