PET OF THE WEEK
Dear Working Wise:I’ve decided that I want to start my own trucking company. What government assistance is available to help me get my business rolling? Signed, Wondering
Dear Working Wise:
Working WiseWorking WiseWorking Wise
Dear Wondering:
There are a number of resources that can assist you with starting your own business—the most signicant being the Business Link.
The Business Link is funded by the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada to provide a wealth of free and low-cost services to Alberta entrepreneurs.
The Business Link (canadabusiness.ab.ca) provides advice on researching, starting, buying, nancing, growing, managing, and marketing your business. They provide information on taxes, government grants, loans, subsidies and tax credits, importing and exporting products, hiring sta and setting up your payroll.
The Business Link oers:• Interactive business plan writing software• Free webinars on marketing, taxes, legal, and accounting topics• Ask an Expert service: Low-cost advice from lawyers, business consultants, accountants and other experts• A searchable business services directory of more than 200 business incubators / accelerator organizations located in communities across the province who specialize in helping local entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses
The Alberta Small Business Resources website (smallbusiness.alberta.ca) is a directory of helpful resources and links for new and established entrepreneurs, including information on starting, funding, licensing, operating and growing your business.
If you will be hiring any sta, the Government of Alberta’s new Job Creation Incentive Program (work.alberta.ca/jobcreation) might be of interest. The program provides grants of up to $5,000 to eligible employers for new hires.
Western Economic Diversication (wd.gc.ca/eng/6310.asp) funds 28 Community Futures oces located across Alberta to provide economic development outside major urban centres. Community Futures provides advice to businesses, loans, and self-employment assistance programs.
Alberta Women Entrepreneurs (www.awebusiness.com) oers training, mentorship and loans to help women start and grow a business.
Futurpreneur Canada (http://futurpreneur.ca) provides young (18-39) entrepreneurs with expertise, nancing, mentoring and business resources.
In addition to oering loans, the Business Development Bank (bdc.ca) provides free advice to entrepreneurs along with a free assessment of your website.
If you live in a rural community, you may be able to take advantage of one of the four Rural Alberta Business Centres (rabc.ca), which provide one-stop access to information, advice, seminars and services for business owners.
Finally, self-employment tips, including how to start and build your business, are available on the ALIS web site at alis.alberta.ca/-js/wo/small-bus.html.
This is only a partial list of the government-funded services and programs that are available across the province to help you get your business o the ground.
Check with your city/town’s economic development oce or your local Alberta Works Centre (humanservices.alberta.ca/oces) for additional local resources, including local business incubators/accelerators.
Good luck!
