Arts and Drama showcase highlights amazing student talent By Sascha Bragaglia I Head of Learning Area, The Arts. Recently our dance and drama students had the opportunity to present a showcase of their original work to a live audience. Presented as an evening viewing, the showcase began with media videos from students in years 8 -12 and continued with original dance and drama compositions from the year 7 -12 students. Highlights of the evening included an entertaining monologue by Asha Vincent, high-level vocal performances, and a moving improvisation by the 2019 Country Week Dance team. On behalf of the Arts Department, I would like to congratulate all of the students involved. My gratitude extends to all the staff that supported the event. We are looking forward to seeing you all at our next exciting event: Soundbytes on June 27, 2019 showcasing the talents of our music students. Mathew Burt I PrincipalWe are looking forward to sending our representative teams to Perth for Country Week in week 10. Good luck to all students participating and to those students also competing in the Kimberley Cup in Broome. Both events are highlights on the school calendar and I know that all students involved will represent the school with pride and distinction. Our Year 10, 11 and 12 students have recently completed exams and in-class assignments and staff have been busy finalising grades and comments for Semester One reports for all students. From what I have seen so far a number of students have performed exceptionally well with very high results and/or significant improvements. As we approach the holidays it is a perfect time for you to reflect with your children on their progress and to put in place appropriate goals and study strategies for Semester Two. A simple way to do this has been a focus of mine for 2019, reflect on each day with these three simple questions:1. What did I do well today?2. What do I need to improve on from today?3. What will I do tomorrow to build on 1 and 2?Good results come from hard work so it is the set of behaviours our students put into place now, along with the amount of purposeful practice they enter into that produces outstanding results. Congratulations to all our students on your hard work and focus during what has been a short and very busy term. You have all been fantastic, even when challenged and continue to impress with your maturity and commitment to learning. Have a wonderful break and we’ll see you again in Term 3.

Dampier Citizen Scientist Camp 2019By Sandi Passmore I Head of Learning Area, Special Needs Education

Students in the Broome Bush Ranger Cadets program at school recently attended an environmental camp at

Dampier. They engaged in citizen scientist activities such as: • CSIRO Eye in Water • ‘Reel it in’ Fishing Gear Clean-up • Tangaroa Blue Marine debris Audit and Source Reduction Plan • Dolphin Watch

The students enjoyed many outdoor activities encouraging leadership skills while collecting significant environmental data and eating loads of KFC. Many thanks to all involved and making this trip a lot of fun.

Year 11 and 12 outdoor education students recently embarked on a four-day paddling expedition through Geikie Gorge along the spectacular Fitzroy River. As well as paddling nearly 40km over the four days, the camp included a hike which provided some picturesque views over the Fitzroy River and the surrounding escarpment, and a build-your-own bush shelter challenge. This expedition and the planning involved formed

a large part of the students' assessment in outdoor education and we are pleased to say all of the students performed

exceptionally well.

The two Broome Clontarf Academy (BCA) classes have truly been busy this term, covering the pillars of Education, Employment, Community and Well Being. For the Education pillar, the boys learnt about the history of Broome on a visit to the Broome Historical Society Museum.

They investigated the indigenous history of Broome, World War II and the Pearling Industry.

For Employment, they tested their vocal skills at making announcements on the local TV and radio station at Goolarri Media Enterprises. Mathew Francis demonstrated

how a radio programme is put together and recorded the

boys making announcements to be used later on air. Vincent Carter showed the team around the TV station and let them get their hands on the TV cameras they use. For the Community pillar, some of the students made a return visit to Germanus Kent House and Bran Nue Dae to chat and mingle with the residents there. The boys are a welcome enjoyment for the elderly who truly enjoy the visits, both last year and again this year.

Lastly, for the Well Being pillar, the students in groups visited the Saint John Ambulance, Broome Sub Centre, to participate in their ‘First Aid Focus Programme’. This gave the boys hands-on experience placing people in a recovery position and ensuring their own safety and that of the patient. They also learnt how to apply a bandage in the case of a snake bite. All-in-all a jam-packed Term 2, giving the boys a wealth of real-world experiences.

Students benefit from Celebrity Chef CookoffBy Kate Howard I Food Technology Teacher Year 9 students from Derby District High School, La Grange Remote Community School and Broome Senior High School were brought together recently for the first ‘Share It’ Experience. As part of the ‘Share It’ Culinary Learning Experience program (that has been running at our school this term), this two-day

event allowed students to focus on healthy eating habits and to cook with fresh ingredients. The students worked alongside celebrity chef Anna Gare and other culinary experts to produce some amazing food. A big thank you to Anna Gare, Marcelle Coakley, Inpex, the Western Australian School Canteen Association and the students and staff from all the schools involved. This fantastic event would not have been possible without you all.
