Welcome to Term 4 at Broome Senior High School. I hope that you all enjoyed the two week break and return to school feeling refreshed and ready to be the best that you can be for the final term of 2018.

We finished off Term 3 with some amazing learning opportunities, including a cultural camp to Cygnet Bay, where the students engaged in the history of the pearling industry through the Lustre Project. We also saw staff and students head off on a great adventure to Japan to undertake a learning experience in ancient and modern history and Japanese culture.

Term 4 has also kicked off with action packed educational experiences as our SEN students got out and about for their adventure camp while back at school our focus is on the Year 12s as they finish their schooling with us and we say farewell. There is so much going on this term and in the lead up to the Christmas break so it is important to remember to stay focused. With Year 10 and Year 11 exams and final assessments for Years 7, 8 & 9 as well as welcoming a new cohort of Year 7 students for 2019 there is still much to do.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Sinclair Musiyiwa and Damar Isherwood, having recently being selected as Broome Senior High School Head Boy and Head Girl for 2019. Damar and Sinclair will be great representatives for the student body and the school; I look forward to working with them both in 2019.

PRINCIPAL’S SAY

Students buzzing after spelling bee winBy Denise Shillinglaw I Head of Learning Area, English.Congratulations to the four students who represented Broome Senior High School at this year’s interschool Spelling Bee last week, Noah Barras-Smith & Will Retallick for the Year 7 team and Jordan Binns & Skye Healy for the Year 8 team.

All of our students performed fantastically and after a tough competition Broome Senior High School took all three top spots.

1st Place - Jordan Binns2nd place - Skye Healy3rd place – Will RetallickThe inter school competition,

hosted by Cable Beach Primary school, included champion spellers from Years 1-8 from across Broome and the West Kimberley. Thanks to Sam Price and Cable Beach Primary School for hosting this valued event. We look forward to doing it all again next year.

Student mentors are on the transition trailYear 7 Broome Senior High School students have been returning to their primary schools during week 2 and 3 as part of the Year 6 transition process. A number of Broome Senior High School student representatives, who previously attended one of the four Broome cluster primary schools, and are currently in their first year of high school were selected late last term as mentors for our 2019 cohort. They have visited both Cable Beach Primary School and Broome Primary School so far along with teaching staff to give a presentation on what to expect from High School and the fun they will have in their new learning environment as well as answer questions and talk to the students.

Girls focus on miningYear 10 Broome Senior High School student Tecaylah Lawford travelled to Kalgoorlie over the holidays on the Curtin University Mine Experience Camp. The Girls’ Focus on Mining Camp is an amazing opportunity for young women to visit different mine sites and participate in a range of University and career workshops. Approximately 24 female students from various schools across Western Australia attended. They went on excursions to various mine sites including a tour of Hannans North Tourist Mine and had time to meet and network with current female mining employees from various fields in mining including Engineering, Mining Operations and Logistics.

“Getting to meet other girls from around WA was really exciting; I got to make new friends. This camp also inspired me to work hard in school and attend Follow the Dream so I can go to University to study Engineering” – Tecaylah Lawford, Broome Senior High School

BROOME SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL I A Culture of Success I WA SECONDARY SCHOOL OF THE YEAR 2012 I A Leading Independent Public School

Year 7 Extension students make life-long memories in JapanBy Ms Kopec I Teacher, HaSS and MathsThe Broome Senior High School Year 7 Academic Extension class, along with its Year 10 mentors, travelled to Japan during the holidays as part of the 2018 Big History Project. This fast-paced Japanese Learning Experience was held over 10 days in Tokyo, Hiroshima and Kyoto. Some of the tour highlights included attending a Sumo event, visiting Tokyo’s Disneyland and Sky Tree, a Baseball match, Universal Studios, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation and the Hiroshima Peace Park & Museum.

Despite the technological wonders of Japan it is our visit to Honkawa Elementary School every year that leaves the greatest impression on both our students and teachers. Honkawa was operating in 1945 during the bombing of Hiroshima and it is this legacy that inspired the students and citizens of Hiroshima to create a peace program. They invite groups from around the world to share Japanese culture and hospitality along with the school’s story and their message of peace.

The trip was excellent again this year and has provided students with many lifelong memories and unique experiences.

Student dazzle at YOHfest 2018By Sascha Bragaglia I Head of Learning Area, ArtsThe annual Act Belong Commit YOHfest event never disappoints and with three Broome Senior High School students performing 8 minute self-choreographed solo dance performances as well as ten Visual Art students from years 10 – 12 submitting work for the exhibition, this year was no exception. All of our students shone on the night and amazed audiences with their talent and dedication. We are extremely proud of their effort and achievements.

Congratulations to all of our YOHfest student entrants for 2018: Kaiya Barrett-Lennard, Mollie Bayliss, Indianna Waters, Hannah Lewis, James Anthony, Jai Lovell, Hailey Beattie, Freya Warman, Jezaya Lawford, Lucy Burns, Isaac Loaring, Aspen Beattie and Daisy Gray.

We also wish to thank those students who attended to provide support to their peers on the night, Naomie Gabb & Hayley Carmichael.Indianna Waters - ‘Innovative delivery of a health topic’ Award

My item explores health themes such as self-identity, depression, self-acceptance, as well as the impacts of family support. My act delves into the consequences of a family either accepting or rejecting their child’s desires; whether they feel comfortable in their own skin, own home or are pushed to their mental limits.

Kaiya Barrett-Lennard – ‘Outstanding character definition’ Award

My Act Belong Commit YOH Fest piece explores themes of bullying, stress, tension, and acceptance. A sleep deprived teenage girl’s stress is compounded by bullying to the point that a foreign energy takes control of her movements. The anxiety and stress build up so much that there’s little that can be done to fix it. But with one simple action life can be a little more manageable. Mollie Bayliss – ‘Dynamic delivery of a health message’ Award

My item is titled “Taken” with the choreographic intent developed from the health themes of unsanitary living, psychological, mental and physical abuse. Those who are held captive are pushed to their physical and mental limits every day, not knowing if or when they will escape from the hell they were dragged into.

BROOME SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL P&C ANNOUNCEMENT

Broome Senior High School Head Girl and Boy announcedCongratulations to Sinclair Musiyiwa (left) and Damar Isherwood (pictured right with principal Mat Burt) Broome Senior High School Head Boy & Girl for 2019. We know they will do a wonderful job representing the Broome Senior High School student body.

Kimberley Girl recognises strength and leadership.Broome Senior High School student Jezaya Lawford was busy over the school holidays taking part in the 2018 Kimberley Girl Program. She attended workshops and events over the week before making it through to the Kimberley-wide final where she took to the catwalk in front of hundreds of people at Goolarri Media before receiving the 2018 Ambassadors Leadership Award.

Goolarri Media Chief Operations Officer and founder of the Kimberley Girl Program, Kira Fong, said;

“Jezaya displayed dedication, determination and perseverance throughout her involvement in the Kimberley Girl Program.

Her strength of purpose whilst participating in the workshops and event activities was admirable and a quality admired by facilitators and other participants. Jezaya was an absolute delight to work with and we look forward to having her involved in the program as a young mentor and role model in the years to come”.

The Kimberley Girl Program began in 2004 as a valuable initiative targeting young Indigenous women between the ages of 16 and 25. Each year, girls engage in workshops and attend events that address contemporary issues, helping participants to overcome the impact of social, economic and isolation disadvantages.
