    when people are the least prepared. Home res canbecome a disaster if you and your family are notfamiliar with how to escape during an emergency.

    o design your own re escape plan, sketch the oor planof your home on a piece of paper. Indicate on the plan alldoors, windows and other areas from which you could es-cape from each room in your home. Draw arrows to indicatethe normal exits which would be your primary escape route.

    With an alternate color, draw arrows to indicate a secondary

    exit from each room in the home.

    Choose a location outside the home where family membersshould meet once they have safely escaped. A neighbors frontyard or sidewalk may be an ideal meeting place.

    Smoke DetectorsIn California, all residents are required to have at least one operat-ing smoke detector. Te number of detectors you need and theirlocation depends upon the layout of your home. Tere should beone smoke detector located near sleeping areas. It is also a goodidea to have at least one detector on each level of your home,including the basement.

    Practice, Practice, Practice Your re escape plan may look great onpaper, but does it really work? Regularexit drills in the home will allow youto test the plan and make adjustmentsas needed. When practicing your exit

    drills in the home, remember to usealternate escape routes as well. Childrenshould be closely supervised duringdrills in the home and no one shouldtake unnecessary chances.

    911Everyone should know the loca-tion of telephones in the home and

    where to nd a telephone outside ofthe home. It is very important that

    children also know the "911" phonenumber in order to report a re orother emergencies to authorities.

    In 2006, 80 percent of all re deaths were caused by homeres. Last year, roughly 2,600 people were killed by homeres and 12,500 were injured, according to the National FireProtection Association. Advanced planning will ensure thatyou are ready for any re emergency and can provide youand your loved ones peace of mind.

    Special NeedsPeople with physical or mental handicaps face greater risksduring a re emergency. People with special needs shouldsleep in a bedroom near someone who can help in the eventof an emergency. A physically handicapped person mayrequire a sleeping area on the ground oor. Design a specialescape plan based on the abilities of the person.
