The visit was led by the Head of Commis-sion B, Eko Supriyadi, and received in personby the Head of DKP, I Wayan Wisada. Unfortu-nately, the visit committed by such commissionspecializing in economic and development af-fairs asked more questions about the matter ofrubbish. Actually, Commission D specializingin health and educational services should handlethis matter. However, in the dialogue transpir-ing at the office of DKP, representatives incharge at Commission B described the matterson rubbish and its handling in years to come.

Aside from rubbish, some members of Com-mission B also put into question about the planof billboard re-arrangement on Jalan Teuku Umarmade into a pilot project. They judged the planwas very good to do because untidy billboardshave engulfed the look of Denpasar City. There-fore, it then looked ugly. “Up to these days, thereare some installations of billboard looking so un-tidy. This condition can make the look of cityunattractive,” said Suadi Putra, a member ofCommission B.

Denpasar (Bali Post)—It is scheduled that from Monday (Oct

19), continued vaccination for anti-rabiesvaccination (VAR) was removed to Poli-clinic of Sanglah Hospital could not berealized. It aimed at diminishing the num-ber of patients coming to EmergencyRoom so that it would not disturb the ser-vices at emergency room. In reality, myriad of patients even stood in line atEmergency Room of Sanglah Hospital.

From the morning, both patients bittenby dog and those asking for continued vac-cination flocked the information counter. As consequence, they should be willingto stand in line until outside informationcounter of Emergency Room.

One of the patients, Wayan Suardikafrom Timpag, Tabanan, even admitted thathe did not asked for VAR at Tabanan Hos-pital, but right away to Sanglah Hospital.Actually, Tabanan Hospital poses one ofthe rabies centers in Bali that also providesVAR. “Every time I asked for VAR inTabanan, I was always referred or its VARran out. Therefore, for this third VAR Icome right away to Sanglah Hospital andnot to Tabanan Hospital,” said Suardika.

Denpasar (Bali Post)—The current dry season thoroughly

makes condition of rivers in Bali run dry.Out of 165 existing rivers, 73 rivers ofthem have run dry. Meanwhile, other 92rivers remain to have water but its debittends to diminish and be polluted by waste. Most drying rivers are located in WestBuleleng, East Buleleng, Kubu andSeraya. In the meantime, debit of riversin Tabanan, Badung and Denpasar has di-minished and they have been polluted byrubbish and waste of garment factory.

Division Head of Bali Public Works, IGusti Nyoman Sura Adnyana, last Mon-day (Oct 19), stated that difficulty of wa-ter encountered by critical regions wereparticularly caused by their condition situ-ating on hills or mountainous ranges, while springs located at lower area. Toovercome the water shortage, he said, in-deed could not be committed immediately.Originally, there was a plan to take ad-vantage of discarded water from UndaRiver and estuarial dam II, but it neededexpensive cost. On that account, it wasthen selected the closer rivers to Badung,Denpasar and Gianyar. For that purpose,it has now been established a rubber damat Penet River (at border of Badung andTabanan). Services of Sanglah Hospital, KenWirasandhi, explained that continued vac-cination for VAR was indeed provided atPoliclinic. However, due to some ob-stacles, chiefly related to billing systemwhose connection needed arranging, caused the services could not be providedat Policlinic. Registration service and VARadministration have run fluently. The prob-lems lay on the connection of data of re-peated patients to their billing system thatwas not arranged yet. “On that account,VAR services at Policlinic could not beundertaken today,” explained Ken onMonday (Oct 19).

Still, based on information, continuedvaccination services would be committedat Policlinic starting from Tuesday (Oct20). As planned, vaccination would takeplace at one of the parts in Ratna Room.Though until Monday the VAR serviceswas undertaken in Emergency Room, butfor continued vaccination stayed to beserved at working hours namely from 8a.m. through 12 a.m. Local Time.

Up to 1 p.m. Local Time last Monday, the number VAR spent at Sanglah Hospi-tal amounted to 150 vials and stock atEmergency Room remained to some 100vials. (kmb24)

The taking of water at Penet River istaken at the lower course of subak point. In other words, the water is no more re-quired for the interest of subak. Mean-while, water shortage at eastern parts likeDenpasar, Sanur until Nusa Dua and a partof Gianyar would be covered by a dammade at Petanu River, Gianyar in 2010.Estimated, the debit of water taken forclean water would reach 300-500 liters persecond.

CandidasaDrought of rivers also occurs at

Candidasa. A member of KarangasemHouse, I Nyoman Sadra, asserted that theriver at Nyuh Tebel area has run dry. For-merly, when the water supply was enough, tens of hectares of rice field in the northof Candidasa before the T-junction toTenganan remained to produce rice. Even, during prolonged dry season, irrigationfrom the river diminished. However, farm-ers along with subak system were able toplant their rice and second crops one afteranother. However, today when the river randry, rice field vanished and farmers couldno more plant their rice. (029/013)

Now, installation of billboards in Denpasar looks disorganized, so it is very ur-gent to be re-arranged. Even, this urge was also delivered by the circle of Commis-sion B, Denpasar House on making a visit to the office of Sanitation and Landscap-ing Services (DKP) of Denpasar City.

Another member, Ketut Resmiyasa, expectedthat within one block should be made a single bill-board stand. Therefore, it could look well arrangedand nice. Now, his party saw the installation ofbillboards by respective owners did not pay atten-tion to aesthetic elements.

On responding this matter, Wisada assured thatthe installation of billboards on Jalan Teuku Umarwould combine the element of aesthetics and ac-quisition of Locally Generated Revenue (PAD).His party no more focused on PAD only, but shouldalso notice the aesthetical aspect so the look ofDenpasar could be tidier. “Re-arrangement onJalan Teuku Umar poses a pilot project that wouldbe resumed with other strategic areas,” said formerAssistant II of Denpasar City Government.

Concerning with the revenue of advertisementtax, Wisada said that up to that month it has ex-ceeded the target stipulated namely IDR 6.8 bil-lion. In its realization, DKP has collected IDR 7.4billion. “On that account, in the upcoming year2010 we are targeting the revenue to reach IDR7.5 billion,” explained Wisada. (kmb12)

For two days, the tiny village ofBariyapur near Nepal’s border withIndia flows with blood as thousandsof Hindu devotees flock to thetemple to take part in whatorganisers believe is the world’sbiggest ritual slaughter.

Many travel from neighbouringIndia for the festival, which hasbeen running uninterrupted foraround three centuries and is dueto take place on November 24 and25.

But this year, a group of animalrights activists is campaigning tostop what it says is senseless cru-elty to innocent creatures — pittingthemselves against Hindu devoteesin this deeply religious nation.

“We launched our campaign toput a stop to the gruesome killingof animals in the name of God,”said Pramada Shah, director ofcampaign group Animal Nepalwhich has launched an online peti-tion demanding the festival be can-celled.

“Even in the 21st century, inno-cent animals are facing cruel treat-ment due to people’s superstition.”

The campaign received a localboost when it won the support ofRam Bahadur Bomjam, a youngNepalese man believed by follow-ers to be a reincarnation of Buddhaafter supporters said he could sur-vive without water, food or sleep.

KATHMANDU - Every five years a temple in southern Nepal plays host to an extraordinaryreligious festival in which hundreds of thousands of animals are sacrificed to the Hindu goddess ofpower Gadhimai.

Bomjam, dubbed “Buddha Boy”by Nepalese media, has spent thepast year meditating in the junglenear Bariyapur, but last week brokehis silence to condemn the festival.

“Human beings have turned bru-tal by offering animal sacrifices tothe goddess. This practice must bestopped now,” he reportedly told lo-cal media.

Bomjam’s supporters haveorganised their own campaign to puta stop to the festival, distributingpamphlets in the area and in Indiantowns on the border urging peoplenot to take part.

One reason for the event’s hugepopularity is its proximity to India, where some states have now bannedsacrificial slaughter.

“In India today there is greaterawareness about animal sacrificeand suffering, so people and rightsactivists are against it,” said N.G.Jayasimha, campaign manager forPeople for the Ethical Treatment ofAnimals in India.

“Some states have banned animalslaughter even for religious pur-poses — including Karnataka,Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. So allthese factors contribute to the num-bers going to Nepal.”

But animal rights campaignersface an uphill struggle in Nepal, where Hindus make up 80 percentof the population and where ritual

sacrifice is a part of everyday life.Local authorities said they would

increase security surrounding thefestival, which begins with the sac-rifice of two wild rats, a rooster, apig, a goat and a lamb before thetemple’s statue of Gadhimai.

Devotees can then bring theiranimals into the temple for ritualpurification before taking them intothe grounds where they will havetheir throats slit. The meat is dis-tributed and eaten.

Nepal’s government has alreadypledged 4.5 million rupees (60,000dollars) in funding for the festivaland authorities say they have nopower to stop it going ahead.

The temple’s head priest, MangalChaudhary Tharu, told AFP 800,000people attended the festival in 2004,when about 400,000 sacrifices weremade, and he said he expected morepeople to come this year.

“Nepal’s security situation hasimproved and we are expecting alarger turnout this year,” said Tharu, the fourth generation of his familyto serve as a priest for the festival, whose origins have never beendocumented.

“We are not forcing devotees tosacrifice animals. It is an age-oldpractice and it must continue.

“The festival will lose its charmand become meaningless if webreak with tradition.”

Cementing his place as the fig-urehead of the post-Suharto reformera, Yudhoyono’s centrist Demo-cratic Party won the most seats inparliament in April general elec-tions just eight years after it wasfounded.

He has promised to crack downon corruption, boost infrastructurespending and continue structuralreforms to improve governanceand accountability.

As leader of the world’s thirdlargest democracy, he also intendsto wield greater international influ-ence in areas such as the Group of20 and global talks on climatechange.

“Indonesia will continue to beon the frontline of creating a bet-ter world order,” Yudhoyono said.

All eyes now turn to the an-nouncement of the new cabinet onWednesday.

After months of political horse-trading, the new executive is ex-pected to be a broad coalition ofsecular and Islamic parties com-bining party-political appointeeswith trusted technocrats.

Economists have already ap-plauded Yudhoyono’s decision toreplace Kalla with US-educatedeconomist and former centralbank chief Boediono as vice presi-dent.

The markets are also hoping tosee Finance Minister Sri MulyaniIndrawati and Trade Minister MariPangestu — considered two ofAsia’s most powerful women —keep their hands on the economiclevers in the new cabinet.

But with 34 seats to fill, there isplenty of room for Yudhoyono —who cannot be elected to a thirdterm — to offer places to politicalappointees to shore up party loy-alties, analysts said.

The PDI-P is likely to remainthe main force in the opposition.

JAKARTA - Director General of Fiscal Policy at the Finance Ministry AnggitoAbimanyu said in Jakarta on Monday said that the deficit experienced by theUnited States reaching 1.417 trillion dollars did not affect the Indonesian gov-ernment budget financing target.

“The U.S. government has just announced a deficit in October this year, so Ithink it is safe,” he said after meeting executives at the Coordinating Ministryfor Economic Affairs building.

He added that although the conditions were safe, but there will be side ef-fects of bonds, but the impact would not be too significant.

“The number of Government Bonds, which we have issued are not as manyas those of other countries because the ‘size’ of our bond market is still small sothe impact of the ‘crowding’ is not too significant,” he said.

For 2010, Anggito added that the impact of these conditions has been calcu-lated as the economy has improved due to the possibility of domestic capabili-ties and the ability to affect market liquidity in bond absorption.

“For 2010 is considered that if the economy recovers, things will depend onthe ability of the country, the ability of the existing liquidity the market canabsorb,” he said.

The U.S. government closed the fiscal year 2009 with a record budget deficitof 1.417 trillion US dollars, approximately 962 billion US dollars higher thanthe previous year and 10 percent larger than the gross domestic product (GDP)which reached the highest since 1945.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and White House budget chiefOrszag Petrus in a joint statement said that the financial deficit in 2009 is largelya product of spending and tax policies which is inherited from the previousadministrations.

Overview:

Coconut is readily available and inexpensive in Bali,

so almost any type of meat or seafood is cooked in

coconut-milk gravy; this chicken dish is particularly

good.

Ingredients:

2 tbsp coconut oil

1 cup chicken spice paste

1 stalk lemon grass, bruised

1 salam leaf

600 gr chicken boneless, cubed

1 tsp salt

½ tsp black peppercorns, crushed

1 ½ cups chicken stock

1 ½ cups coconut milk, light

Fried shallots to garnish

Preparation:

Heat oil in heavy saucepan. Add spice paste and

sauté for 2 minutes over low heat. Add lemon grass,

salam leaf and chicken pieces and continue to sauté for

2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

Pour in chicken stock, bring to boil and simmer for

one minute. Add coconut milk, bring to boil, and simmer

until chicken is cooked and sauce thickens. If sauce

becomes too thick, add a little chicken stock. Serve with

Nasi Kuning or steamed rice.

Helpful hints:

Do not cover the pan during cooking, this to prevent

the coconut milk from curdling. If you are worried about

cholesterol, discard the chicken skin before cooking.

AFTER weeks of a rising euro, while both the dollar and the yuanhave fallen, a shadow has been castover a tentative export-led Europeanrecovery since the summer — forc-ing euro policy leaders to adopt adual strategy.

Eurogroup chief Jean-ClaudeJuncker said he, European CentralBank boss Jean-Claude Trichet andEU economic and monetary affairscommissioner Joaquin Almuniawould now turn their sights onBeijing before the year is out.

“We spent quite a long timediscussing exchange rates tonight,it’s a problem which has us wor-ried,” Luxembourg Prime MinisterJuncker told reporters after a meet-ing of finance ministers from the 16countries that use the euro.

In New York, the dollar againtraded lower late Monday, the eurorising to 1.4958 dollars at 2100GMT from 1.4903 dollars late inNew York on Friday.

The United States, meanwhile,

Japan faces a “significant” bud-get deficit for the current fiscal yearthrough March 2010, Fujii told anews conference, blaming the fall-out from the global economic down-turn.

In such a situation, Tokyo“should not hesitate to issue newbonds” to cover the deficit, he added.

Japan’s centre-left government, which took office last month, hasmade a number of ambitious fiscalpledges, including expandedchildcare allowances and free highschool tuition.

It is freezing spending of about2.93 trillion yen (32 billion dollars)from its predecessor’s extra budgetof 14.7 trillion yen for this year aspart of its war on waste in the pub-lic sector.

SINGAPORE - Singapore haspassed a law aimed at tightening thescrews on cross-border tax cheatsand complying with stricter stan-dards for world banking centres, thefinance ministry said Tuesday.

The move is the latest measureby Southeast Asia’s financial capi-tal, which denies being a haven fortax evaders, to get itself off a “greylist” of countries that have not fullyimplemented the standards.

A bill amending Singapore’stax laws was passed by parliamentMonday and the government ex-pects to sign enough bilateral agree-ments to be upgraded to the “whitelist” of compliant countries by theend of the year, the ministry said.

The standards refer to a set ofprinciples drawn up by theOrganisation for Economic Coop-eration and Development (OECD)outlining how countries should ad-dress international tax evasionthrough information sharing.

“The changes we are enact-ing are fully in keeping withSingapore’s status and reputationas a trusted and responsible busi-ness and financial hub committedto the international efforts to com-bat cross-border tax evasion,” Fi-nance Minister Tharman

money if it is to meet its campaigngoals, adding to Japan’s mountainof public debt — already the high-est among major industrialised na-tions.

In an interview with the Nikkeipublished Tuesday, Fujii saidJapan’s new bond issuance may top50 trillion yen (552 billion dollars)for the first time ever in the currentfiscal year.

Tax revenue may fall below 40trillion yen for the first since fiscal1985, he indicated.

It would be the first time bondissuance has exceeded tax incomesince 1946, when Japan was rebuild-ing from the ashes of World War II,the Nikkei said.

The Japanese government hadearlier estimated that this fiscalyear’s new bond issuance would beworth around 44 trillion yen, alreadya record for the debt-ridden nation, which has launched a series of eco-nomic stimulus measures.

Stimulus spending measuresare expected to push Japan’s publicdebt up to about 200 percent of GDPin 2010, The Organisation for Eco-nomic Cooperation and Develop-ment said last month.

Japan’s crawled out of a year-long recession in the second quarterof 2009, but exports and factory out-put are much lower than before theglobal financial crisis began and un-employment is close to a record high.

Shanmugaratnam told parliamentMonday.

He said the city-state hadreached agreements with 20 juris-dictions to incorporate the OECD’sglobal standards, which were en-dorsed by a United Nations com-mittee on tax cooperation last year.

Singapore has formally signedAvoidance of Double TaxationAgreements (DTAs) with 11 of the20 countries and territories andneeds only to ink its 12th accord toget out of the OECD gray list,Shanmugaratnam said.

“We are confident that we willformally conclude more than 12agreements before the end of thisyear,” the finance minister said.

Despite passing the amendedlaw, Shanmugaratnam assured de-positors that there will be no indis-criminate prying into taxpayers’ ac-counts.

“Spurious or frivolous requestsfor information will not be accededto. Further, it (the amended law)does not allow for ‘fishing expedi-tions,’” he said.

This means that requests for in-formation must be “specific, de-tailed and relevant to the tax affairsof a given taxpayer,” the ministeradded.

has itself attacked China for a “lackof flexibility” in its yuan currency, which has depreciated 6.9 percentagainst the dollar since February.

Trichet said it was the trio’s“common position” that the “exces-sive volatility” of currency move-ments had clearly “negative impli-cations for the economic and finan-cial stability” of Europe’s economyas a whole.

Despite repeated attempts atcajoling Washington into backing its‘strong dollar’ mantra with concretesigns of rising value, analysts andtraders have said the value of theeuro could yet regain its all-timehigh of 1.60 dollars.

Meantime, the falling yuan —not to mention the pound, with Brit-ain the other major buyer ofeurozone goods and services — fur-ther threatens European prospects ata time when leaders are still pump-ing billions of stimulus funding intotheir economies.

“It is foreseen that the three of

us will travel to China before the endof this year and discuss the exchangerate policy,” said Juncker, withoutgiving any detail as to what messagethey would carry.

Experts have warned that thespluttering economic recovery inEurope is endangered by a dive inthe value of the dollar which ana-lysts say Washington covets in or-der to lower debts to China and boostexports.

There is concern in Europe thatWashington is seeking a short-termboost to its own exports and a long-term reduction in the value of gov-ernment and private debts, much ofwhich is held in China.

The European Commissionreckons that appreciation in eurovalue against the dollar of 10 per-cent in real terms would see exportsfall by around 2.5 percent within twoyears.

After US Federal Reserve chiefBen Bernanke reiterated the US pub-lic stance backing a strong dollar,

Trichet said the European trio sharedthe same “appreciation” ofBernanke’s remarks.

At a G20 summit in Pittsburghlast month, world leaders unveiled anew vision for economic gover-nance, with bold plans to fix globalimbalances and give more clout toemerging giants such as China andIndia.

However, Juncker said Fridaythat “if the euro’s direction were tocontinue to move along the lines ofrecent weeks, there is a risk... that itcould slow economic recovery in Eu-rope.”

France’s Finance MinisterChristine Lagarde added afterMonday’s late-night talks in Luxem-bourg: “We repeated together that wewanted a strong dollar, that we neededa strong dollar.”

It can be watchedlive in 16 countries: Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, France, India, Ire-land, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, SouthKorea, Spain and the United States.

“YouTube is thrilled to be able to provide our global audience with a livestreaming performance from one of the world’s greatest bands,” Chris Maxcy, director of YouTube partner development, said in a blog post. YouTube hasbeen experimenting with more live events as Google seeks ways to turn thevideo-sharing site it purchased for 1.65 billion dollars in 2006 into a money-making venture.

R&B star Beyonce Knowleshas postponed a planned concert inMalaysia, the event’s organizer saidMonday, following accusations byIslamic conservatives that the showwould be immoral. Knowles, known for her provocative clothesand choreography, had been sched-uled to perform at a Kuala Lumpurstadium Oct. 25. The show “hasbeen postponed to a future date tobe announced shortly,” Malaysianentertainment companyMarctensia said in a statement.

“The postponement is solely(the) decision of the artist and hasnothing to do with other externalreasons,” the statement said. AMarctensia representative de-clined to say whether the decisionwas prompted by criticism fromthe Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, the country’s largest oppositiongroup, which has called for theshow to be scrapped because it

would promote “Western sexy performances.”Knowles also canceled a planned performance in Malaysia in 2007

following protest threats by the opposition Islamic party. At the time, her talent agency said the show was called off due to a schedulingconflict. Instead, Knowles went to Indonesia, also a largely Muslimcountry, which has less stringent rules about how performers shoulddress and behave. Female artists at Malaysian concerts are requiredby government rules to cover up from the shoulders to knees, with nocleavage showing.

Last month, Marctensia addressed concerns that Knowles mightwear inappropriate outfits, saying “all parties have come to an ami-cable understanding” about stage costumes. Other female pop starssuch as Avril Lavigne and Gwen Stefani have performed in Malaysiadespite similar protest threats by conservative Muslims. Both singerswore clothes that revealed little skin. Some entertainment industryofficials say the strict regulations and frequent controversies have dis-couraged many international artists from visiting Malaysia.

A new study finds no differencesin blood mercury levels betweenchildren who are developing nor-mally and those diagnosed with au-tism or autism spectrum disorders. The findings, appearing online Oct.19 in the journal EnvironmentalHealth Perspectives, may quell someof the debate surrounding mercuryand autism. The researchers did not,for instance, look at whether mer-cury might play a causal role in thisgroup of developmental disorders.

“This is an excellent study thathas addressed a very importantquestion for many families aboutthe role of mercury [in autism],”said Dr. Patricia Manning-Courtney, medical director of TheKelly O’Leary Center for AutismSpectrum Disorders at CincinnatiChildren’s Hospital Medical Cen-ter. “It’s a very clear study [in] thatno differences in mercury wereseen. Is it going to put the ques-tions to rest? I think no. It’s an-other important contribution to thelarge body of knowledge on thistopic, but I think it will still be anarea of great controversy.”

Previous studies have shownhigher blood mercury levels inpeople with autism, but the results, along with the quality of the stud-ies, have been inconsistent.

One of the biggest controversiesclaims that vaccines containing thepreservative thimerosal, whichcontains mercury, might cause au-tism. But thimerosal is no longerused routinely in children’s vac-cines and, earlier this year, a U.S.court ruled that there is no scien-tific evidence that childhood vac-cines such as the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine caused autism inchildren of parents seeking com-pensation from a federal fund.

The authors of this studywanted to fill one gap in the re-search: a lack of good evidencecomparing mercury levels in chil-dren with autism and childrenwithout autism. The authorslooked at 452 children aged 2 to 5,

Mercury Levels NotAbnormal in Autistic Children

who either had autism/autism spec-trum disorder, developmental de-lays other than autism (such asDown syndrome), or who weredeveloping normally. Bloodsamples were taken from the chil-dren while mothers answered ques-tions about different possible ex-posures to mercury, such as diet, dental amalgams, thimerosal-con-taining vaccines and even personal-care products such as earwax re-moval systems and nasal sprays.

First results showed that chil-dren with autism actually hadmuch lower levels of mercury intheir blood, but this was explainedby the fact that these children ateless fish. When the results wereadjusted for this and other vari-ables, mercury levels came outabout the same between the autismgroup and the control group. “Notonly do we not see differences, butthe values are pretty close to na-tional averages,” said study authorIrva Hertz-Picciotto, chief of en-vironmental and occupationalhealth and a faculty member at theMIND Institute at the Universityof California, Davis.

Overall, children with develop-mental delays other than autism hadlower blood mercury concentra-tions. Children who had mercury-based dental fillings who groundtheir teeth or chewed gum had bloodconcentrations of the metal. Andthose few children who had had amercury-containing vaccine did notshow elevations in their blood lev-els. “The relationship between[mercury] intake to blood levelsseems to follow the pattern that weexpect and it’s well known that mostof the mercury in the body doescome from fish consumption,”Hertz-Picciotto said. “There reallywere very few children who hadvaccines that would have or couldhave contained thimerosal.”

Most of the children in the studyhad received vaccines after thime-rosal was removed from vaccines, she said.

WASHINGTON – European astronomers have found 32 new planets outside our solar system, adding evidenceto the theory that the universe has many places where life could develop. Scientists using the European SouthernObservatory telescope didn’t find any planets quite the size of Earth or any that seemed habitable or even unusual. But their announcement increased the number of planets discovered outside the solar system to more than 400.

said in a Web-based news briefingfrom a conference in Portugal. “Na-ture doesn’t like a vacuum. If there isspace to put a planet there, there willbe a planet there.”

What astronomers said is espe-cially exciting is that about 40 per-cent of sun-like stars have planets thatare closer to being Earth-sized thanthe size of Jupiter. Jupiter’s mass ismore than 300 times that of Earth’s.

Depending on definitions of thesize of super-Earths, the discoverysuggests that planets that have amass similar to Earth’s are “extraor-dinarily commonplace,” said AlanBoss, an astronomer at the CarnegieInstitution of Washington. He was

not part of the European team. “Theuniverse must indeed be crowdedwith habitable worlds.”

Boss said finding 32 planets atonce is a record “and it really showsthat the Europeans have taken thelead” in finding planets outside thesolar system.

The discoveries were made by theHigh Accuracy Radial VelocityPlanet Searcher, which is an attach-ment to the European observatorytelescope in Chile that looks forslight wobbles in a star’s move-ments. Those changes would bemade by the tug of a planet’s grav-ity on the star. There are no photosof these planets.

LONDON - Nikolay Valuev is used to the looks andsniggers that his huge size has attracted over the years, butthe comments from his latest challenger have been particu-larly caustic. David Haye, Britain’s former undisputed worldcruiserweight champion, has declared he is only just get-ting warmed up after calling Valuev “a circus freak” aheadof their fight in Nuremberg on November 7 for Valuev’sWBA heavyweight title.

At 7ft 2inches tall and 23 stone, Valuev is the biggestworld heavyweight champion in history and will tower overhis opponent when he gets into the ring to face Haye, whois 6ft 2in and does not expect to be over 16 stones for thefight. Haye’s trash talk might be particularly dirty, but itdoes not seem to be unsettling the Russian champion.

Valuev has heard all the insults before after being com-pared to Shrek and billed earlier in his career as ‘The Beastfrom the East’. “I am not a circus show,” said Valuev. “Iam a normal human being. People sometimes do not treatme like a human being because of my size and make me asensation. I try to not take it personally because they do notknow me as a person. My name is Nikolay Valuev, notsomething else.”

But Valuev’s Germany-based promoter KalleSauerland believes Haye’s comments have riled the cham-pion. “Niko has laughed at what Haye has been saying buthe didn’t like the image of Haye punching his head off acardboard cut out of himself,” Sauerland told AFP. “Hepromised me that he’s going to knock Haye out, which hedoesn’t normally say about opponents. Even a Stockholmvictory on Sunday would not beenough to put Soderling ahead of theinactive Verdasco, though it willclose the points gap between the pair.“I know that if I play well, I have achance, but this tournament won’tdecide who’s going to play in Lon-don,” said the Swede. “There’s stilla lot of tennis to be played this year.

The Spanish capital hosts a match-up between the two most successfulclubs in European history with Realboasting a record nine European Cupsto Milan’s seven. Both sides can pointto illustrious histories but at presentthey are looking to restore their repu-tations as European superpowers withReal failing to get past the quarter-fi-nals of the competition since 2004which was the year Milan last wontheir domestic title.

Milan are under pressure in thegroup after a shock 1-0 home loss tounfancied FC Zurich while Real areperched comfortably at the top with amaximum six points. “It is time to seeReal Madrid’s true colours against anopponent that has won a lot of Euro-pean Cups and who we really respect,”said Real defender Sergio Ramos.

ROME - Juventus will not be un-derestimating group minnows MaccabiHaifa when the Israelis come to Turinin the Champions League on Wednes-day. Maccabi sit bottom of Group Aafter two defeats to Bayern Munich andBordeaux while Juve are only one placeand two points above them after hav-ing drawn against the same two teams.

But despite Haifa’s limited Euro-pean pedigree, Juve centre-backGiorgio Chiellini insisted his team willtreat their opponents like the greats ofEuropean football. Last year Juve beatReal Madrid home and away in thegroup stages before they fell to Chelseain the first knock-out round.

“On Wednesday we have to playwith the same intensity we showed ayear ago against Real,” said Chiellini.“In this match and in the next one inTel Aviv (Haifa’s ground does not meetUEFA standards so they play Champi-ons League matches in Tel Aviv’s na-tional stadium) are matches we have towin at any cost so we can make it to thelast two group games in the best pos-sible health.

“We don’t know much aboutMaccabi, personally I know the striker(Vladimir) Dvalishvili because I cameup against him for the national teamagainst Georgia last month. They’re ateam that must be respected for whatthey did against Bayern Munich and

MADRID - Real Madrid’s Brazilian superstar Kaka faces oldclub AC Milan for the first time on Wednesday when the twosides do battle at the Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions LeagueGroup C match. Kaka was an icon at Milan after six successfulyears helping the club win the 2007 Champions League crownbut left for Real this summer in a 65 million-euro move which heinsisted was to help Milan with their financial problems.

midfielder Clarence Seedorf who wonthe Champions League in Real coloursback in 1998.

“Real Madrid? No-one scares me,there’s no time to be scared,” saidDutchman Seedorf. A return to theBernabeu will also be memorable forBrazilian Ronaldinho who tormentedReal in his Barcelona days and fa-mously received a standing ovationfrom the Bernabeu crowd in the 2005/06 season after scoring a great solo goalfor Barca in a 3-0 win in ‘El Clasico’.Dutch forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaardidn’t get many standing ovations inhis brief seven months at Real beforebeing let go to Milan and will have apoint to prove if given the chance.

Milan may be a shadow of thegreat side from the 1990s but have out-performed Real in Europe over the lastfive seasons reaching the final twice, losing the first against Liverpool in2005 and then defeating the same op-position in 2007. Real have not reachedthe final since 2002 but hope thatchanges this season especially with theshowpiece final at their stadium.

Juve to treat Haifa likeReal, says Chiellini

Bordeaux when they were only beatenat the end of the games.”

Juve’s overriding problem onWednesday might not be Maccabi butthemselves. After a great start to theseason in which they won their first fourSerie A matches, including successiveaway wins at AS Roma and Lazio, theyhave not won in five matches (four inSerie A and one in the ChampionsLeague).

In fact they have only one win inseven matches in all competitions andthat came at home to rock-bottomLivorno and thanks to a man-of-the-match performance from goalkeeperGianluigi Buffon. That is hardly theform of potential champions, either ofItaly or of Europe.

However, it is a remarkably simi-lar situation to that faced by Juve a yearago when Real were the visitors to Turinat the same stage of the competition.Back then, as now, they had not won infive matches only their situation wasworse as they had lost two of those five— instead of just one this time — andwere struggling in the league with onlynine points and two wins from sevengames.

This time they are third in the tableand only four points behind leaders andchampions Inter Milan. “Then we werealso in a delicate period. In the leaguethings were going worse because wehad already lost twice and we werelower in the table,” added Chiellini.

Ancelotti prays for more Anelka magicset-pieces. Suddenly Chelsea don’t lookquite so all-conquering, but they havea chance to get back on track inWednesday’s European clash againstAtletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge.

Victories over Porto and ApoelNicosia have put Ancelotti’s team topof Group D and three points againstAtletico would all but secure their placein the knockout stages. If Chelsea doget another win it would be little sur-prise if the decisive blow is deliveredby France striker Anelka. The formerReal Madrid star has scored both of theBlues’ match-winning goals in theChampions League this season and hisform in Europe has helped to overcomethe absence of suspended Ivory Coastforward Didier Drogba.

Drogba was banned for three

games by UEFA following his rant atreferee Tom Henning Ovrebo follow-ing their controversial semi-final defeatagainst Barcelona last season. ButAnelka has thrived in Drogba’s absenceand he claims playing alongside adapt-able forwards like Nwankwo Kanu andDennis Bergkamp during his time at Ar-senal has been instrumental in his suc-cess at leading the attack.

“You know when you play withbig players like Bergkamp or Kanu thatyou will learn - I have learned from alot of people that I’ve played with andtried to take a little bit from all of them,”Anelka said. “I am a striker but not atthe top of the team and I’m still in thecentre of the pitch - a bit like the posi-tion Dennis Bergkamp used to play.“He used to play for Arsenal like thatwhen I was there, not like a striker, butnot a number 10 or a midfield playereither. You play between the number10 position and the centre-forward po-sition, that’s nine-and-a-half.”

Atletico, who travel to England onthe back of a dismal 3-0 defeat atOsasuna, are languishing in the lowerreaches of La Liga as well as sitting bot-tom of their European group. Under-pressure boss Abel Resino needs a bigperformance from former ManchesterUnited Diego Forlan - last season’s Eu-ropean golden boot winner. Forlan said:“Things haven’t been going so well andI think we have been playing with a bitof anxiety. “But I’ve got confidence inthe squad we have and I think we canturn it around soon enough.”

“We don’t play too many games,” Howett told Reuters. “We put onthe table what we can afford and what we think is a serious offer inthe current market. I think genuinely we could work well with him, give him a car that’s quick.”

He added: “We have had very good relationships with Scandina-vian drivers in the rallying times that enjoy life and it works verywell, so we could cope with it as a team.” Raikkonen is yet to decideon his future after agreeing to leave the Ferrari team a year before theend of his contract in order to make way for Fernando Alonso.

The Finn has made it clear that he is only interested in staying inFormula 1 if he can fight for wins straight away. Howett, who hadinsisted it was very unlikely that Jarno Trulli would stay at the teamnext year, said the Italian has an offer from Toyota. He also said theteam is still in talks with Timo Glock. “With both drivers we are stillmaintaining a degree of discussion,” said Howett.

“We have put an offer on the table with Jarno, I think that he him-self is not dissatisfied with the financial offer, the bottom line to someextent is certain issues on the contract and I don’t think they are ne-gotiable from our side. He may well be in the car next year but it’s notat all clear.”

JORGE LORENZO said hewas angry with himself for crash-ing in Australia, but was not down-cast about the points lost as he knewthe title was already unlikely. TheSpaniard’s first lap error at PhillipIsland and title rival ValentinoRossi’s second place has givenRossi a commanding 38 point ad-vantage in the championship withonly two races to go, giving him anexcellent chance of clinching hisseventh MotoGP crown at Sepangnext weekend.

Lorenzo crashed heavily in Aus-tralia after tapping the back of NickyHayden’s Ducati as they braked forthe first corner. “I’m a little bit sadfor this crash, not for the champion-ship but for my mistake,” saidLorenzo. “I didn’t expect this kindof mistake from myself. It was to-tally my fault, I miscalculated thedistance off the line and Nickybraked earlier than I was expectingand I hit him. I thought I could saveit but my front brake was broken andso when I tried to brake for the cor-ner I couldn’t and the rear made abig slide. I want to say sorry to Nickybecause I ruined his race today.”

Before the race Lorenzo had de-clared that he had nothing to lose ashe tried to close Rossi’s previous 18point lead, and he remained calmabout the championship after thecrash. “The title was a long shotanyway and now I just want to lookforward to the final two races,” hesaid. Hayden, who was able to con-tinue to finish 15th with a damagedbike, accepted Lorenzo’s apology.

Ferrari Formula One driver Kimi Raikkonen, of Finland, speaks during a press conference inSao Paulo, Brazil, Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009. The Brazilian F1 Grand Pix will be held on Oct. 18 inSao Paulo.

Raikkonenhas an offerfrom Toyota

Kimi Raikkonen has an offer from Toyota for the 2010 sea-son, and team president John Howett believes the Finn could fitwell in the Japanese squad.

Lorenzo: Title was a long shot anyway “I got probably the best start I

have had all season but unfortu-nately it proved to be my downfall,”he said. “I’m not sure what hap-pened to Jorge - I saw he got a badstart as I passed him, then the nextthing I know I felt a really hardimpact. It was so hard it tore bothour bikes up and obviously hecouldn’t keep his upright. Thank-fully I did and I got back on trackbut the thing was so damaged I wasjust riding around.”

“Anyway, I can’t blame Jorgebecause he is fighting for the cham-

pionship, he obviously didn’t meanit and I know it is not his style. Thegood thing is that I didn’t get hurt, which could have easily happened inthat corner.” Although he hit theground at high speed in the incident,Lorenzo escaped with only superfi-cial injuries from sliding across thetrack and run-off. I have a bit of dam-age to my nose and my finger but itcould have been a lot worse,” he said.“This is what happens in racing and, although I am disappointed about therace, the most important thing is thatI am not badly injured.”
