Forthcoming Events

JS Musician of the Year Seniors Go-Karting The Musician of the Year event is now scheduled to

take place on Friday 1st May 2015. The event is

open to Junior Section boys in Primary 4-6, for solo

voice or solo instrument, one entry per boy. Once

again the event will take place at Morningside

Parish Church Hall from 6.45pm. Revised Entry

forms are now available for completion.

The next seniors event is bieng held at Xtreme Karting in

Newbridge on Sunday 28th February 2016. A mini

Grand Prix Event will be held across the evening.

This event is now closed to entries, please ensure that all

participants complete a Special Events form and bring it

with them on the night.

Battalion Cross Country Battalion Activity Weekend This years’ Battalion cross country event takes place

on Saturday 5th March 2016 at Holyrood Park,

Entry forms are available on the website.

Participants in this event will then have the

opportunity to be selected to take part in the

National Event being held on 19th March.

Closing Date: 22nd February 2016

A Battalion Acitivity Weekend is planned to take place on

18th – 20nd March 2016 at Craggan. A mix of activities

will run over the weekend. If you are interested in

attending please notify the office. Full information is

available on the website or from the office.

Company Section Badminton Event The competition ran smoothly from the set 5pm start time and finished around 7:45, pretty much on schedule with the

initial times set out by the organisers (D MacKenzie, I Montgomery, P McKay). The competition was run by D

MacKenzie and I Montgomery, with D MacKenzie dealing with administrative duties and drawing fixtures, and I

Montgomery announcing groups and matches, and allocating these ties to particular courts available. The night was

opened by I Montgomery and was subsequently ended with final words from J Webber from the 65th, who concluded

the prize giving after the presentation of Senior medals and trophies.

Prior to the junior competition getting underway, there was a bit of reshuffling required regarding the group stages due

to certain individuals/partnerships being unable to attend on the day. There was some reasons offered by Officers

present on the day, but on the other hand some were just informing that boys were not able to turn up. Please see below

a list of all companies, with figures stating the number of boys that attended in comparison to number of boys registered

for the junior doubles competition:

10th Leith – 6/10

1st Leith – 1/2

51st Bonnyrigg – 6/10

61st Edinburgh – 2/5

65th Edinburgh – 3/3

1st Dunbar – 2/2

48th Edinburgh – 6/8

There were 6 groups of 3 competitors at the beginning, with the winner of each progressing along with the 2 best

runners up. From then on the knock out stages commenced until we had a final and 3rd/4th place play-off, being T

Pirie/A Hodge (7th Edin) vs. J Wang/ L R Lothian (65th Edin/1st Leith) and T Gillies/R Bayne (20th Leith) vs. S

Robertson/J Martin (10th Leith) respectively.

The competition results for the juniors were as follows:

Winners: JASON WANG & JOHN ROSS LOTHIAN (65th Edinburgh/1st Leith)

Runners Up: TORIN PIRIE & ALEXANDER HODGE (7th Edinburgh)

3rd Place: OLIVER GILLIES & RORY BAYNE (20th Leith)

In terms of the Seniors single competition, this also commenced on time with the only issue being S3 boys being involved

in junior finals causing some slight delays to certain group games starting on time. Out of the initial 19 boys registered,

only 11 were present on the night but thankfully the 20th Leith found three extra willing competitors and the 63rd

providing one, so thanks must be passed on to them for stepping in. As per the juniors, please see the breakdown of

attendees below (present compared to registered).

There were 5 groups of 3 competitors at the beginning, with the winner of each progressing along with the 3 best

(65th Edin) vs. J Wang (65th Edin) and C Bryce (20th Leith) vs. R Aitchison (10th Leith) respectively.

Runner Up: JASON WANG (65th Edinburgh)

3rd Place: ROSS AITCHISON (10th Leith)

Looking forward to next year’s event, one observation made by myself organisers and officers present was that based

on the numbers of boys attending we could look to move the event to a smaller venue. In terms of venues, we were

focussing on one which would be cheaper to hire yet could still provide sufficient courts to play on and space for

parents/officers to watch. Suggestions made on the night by officers present were either Lasswade or Wester Hailes, so

quotes on hire costs should be obtained come Autumn time.

Special thanks should be passed on to Will McFarlane from the 48th Edinburgh who helped with briefing the

competitors with the rules of the game, helping with officiating and organising of fixtures. Will volunteered to help run

the event as part of his Queens Badge work and the event would not have ran as smoothly had he not been present

from the beginning. The behaviour of all boys present was exemplary, and credit must also be given to all parents and

officers who not only supported their boys present, but who also stepped in and helped officiate when required. Finally,

without the help of Pamela McKay and Ian Montgomery, the competition would not have gone ahead so a note of

thanks must be passed on to both for their help in organising behind the scenes.

65th Edinburgh Lieutenant Officer

Company Section Basketball Event This event was arranged by 2 members of the 65th Edinburgh Company, Liam Packwood and Lucas Johnston, on 12th

December. Liam and Lucas arranged this event as part of their Queens Badge. The event was well attended with 5

Companies entering 12 teams on the day so a huge success for these young men.

Well done to them both for planning and running a great afternoon which was enjoyed by all who took part

Junior Section Indoor Football Another fun packed afternoon of Junior Section indoor football at Meadowmill Sports Centre on Sunday 17 th January,

2016. Around 90 boys representing 9 companies took part in this annual competition. It was a goal fest with over 150

goals scored during the event. There was some excellent football on display and a good few talented individuals very

evident. The 61st again showed they are well coached and presented side, playing consistently to win the Senior Cup.

The 10th Leith Company ensured there is a new name on the Junior Trophy. Well done to them. It was great to see some

of the smaller companies taking part. Thanks must go to the referees: - Jack and Callum from the Edinburgh Referees

Association. Congratulations to all the boys who took part and played all their games in a very sporting manner. Hope

to see you all back next year.

The Junior Section boys had a great afternoon out at the Meadowmill Sports centre near Tranent on Sunday 17 January playing indoor football. The picture shows the three 10th Leith teams taking part. It turned out to be a successful afternoon with the Primary 6 team winning through to the final of their age group. The Musselburgh JS beat us. The Primary 4/5 team went one further and won the final of their age group. The Boys were so pleased to return to Leith with the winner’s shield.

Company Section & Seniors Worship Event 120 Members and Leaders from 8 Companies attended ‘Bring Out The Best In Ourselves - A Company Section &

Seniors’ Worship Event’ on Friday 12th February at St Andrew's & St George's West Church.

Rev Ian Gilmour facilitated discussions on the topics of discipline and leadership (based on Leading by Alex Ferguson).

Five musicians from the Church took us on a journey through Church music.

Donations made on the night will be given to ‘Kit For Kenya!’, The Boys’ Brigade World Mission Fund Appeal 2016.

Thanks must go to: St Andrew's & St George's West Church, Rev Ian Gilmour, the musicians and Church staff and

volunteers. Thanks also to:

parents and Leaders who brought the young people along

all the Leaders that facilitated small group discussions

Seniors & YLN Bowling & Pizza Outing The Bowling and Pizza event was well attended by 4 companies from across the battalion (7th, 48th, 51st and 65th)

with 18 Seniors and 5 Staff. Boys met and were mixed across 4 lanes to allow them to socialise amongst themselves.

The first game of bowling commenced and the clear bowlers were showing amongst us, luckily I opted for the bumpers

to be up on all the lanes. With some luck I think most got a strike or at least a spare, me on the other hand I bowled a

pretty constant 9 pins across each shot on each of the two games. The second games proceeded to show how good the

seniors were compared to the staff. Unfortunately for them we had Michael Clarke, who got the high score for the day

and was presented his certificate.

Bowling done and up for the food. We enjoyed a selection of sandwiches, sausage rolls, sausages and of course the

side dish of choice at our events, Pizza. Drinks were pre-ordered and I think our host was surprised we were so

organised.

Boys then provided some ideas for future events for us to consider.

Overall an enjoyable afternoon and thanks to the World of Bowling for looking after us.

Forthcoming Training

Child Protection Building Your Skills – For Boys This training session will take place at Pollock Pavilion on

Saturday 19th March 2016 between 10am and 12noon.

The course is open to all Officers, Leaders and helpers in

the Battalion and will be free to anyone participating.

Build Your Skills Course

This is required by Boys wishing to complete their

President’s Badge and we are offering two opportunities:

31st Edinburgh Boys' Brigade 2016 Loony Dook - South Queensferry

Three members of the 31st Edinburgh Boys' Brigade got 2016 off to a cold start by taking part in the annual Loony Dook at

South Queensferry.

Stewart Brown, Ciaran Hunter & Sean Slight bravely displayed the Company Flag before entering the water. The boys were

raising money for the Company and RNLI.

Craggan Group have been working hard The Craggan Group have been working hard over the past few months doing alot of work behind the scenes and at the

start of February the group generously volunteered more of their time and went to Craggan. No they were not there to

relax but spent the weekend working hard doing an array of repairs and upkeep on the centre. Well done and huge

amount of thanks to those who braced the freezing cold and wet weather and gave up their time for this. If anyone feels

they would be interested in joining the group or even assist with some DIY at Craggan there is still work to be done so if you

feel you could help in anyway please do let us know.

Cashback Funding We were delighted that the Cabinet Secretary for Justice Michael Matheson MSP recently paid a visit to Carronvale House.

During his time here he met young people who had planned the very successful Strive event for young leaders. Watch the

funding to allow the youth work consortium to continue its programme, including the successful Small Grants Scheme until

Scottish Conference – 5th March 2016 Our next Scottish Conference will be held at Bankfoot, Perthshire on Saturday 5th March 2016. The conference is open to

all BB leaders and the Scotland Committee is particularly keen that all Battalions are represented. During the day we will be

highlighting a number of new initiatives and running various workshops. Booking information will be available in the New

Year but please save the date. The previous conference was a great success and it would be great to have you with us!

Burns Supper Our Burns Supper is always a great way to celebrate the Bard in excellent BB company. Please try and company along to

the next one on Monday 25th January at Carronvale House. For £15 you can have an enjoyable evening and also help

Give thanks for all our trainers who prepare and deliver training at our courses. Thank God for their gifts and
