Project Summary

I spent two weeks volunteering at a Diabetes Camp in

Ogden Canyon this summer. My main role was as a

counselor, but I also helped in the kitchen, with crafts

and activities, and even taught an education session

on nutrition.

This was a life changing opportunity for me. I gained

a greater understanding for the challenges faced by

those with chronic diseases, especially those with

diabetes. I was very impressed with the youth that

attended this camp and their positive attitude on life

despite the challenges they faced daily with their

health.

Project Highlights

The highlight of my experience was working with the

amazing youth that attended. I learned so much from

each of them.

One of my ten year old campers put a pump site

in my arm for me. She was so excited because

she had never put one in before. She wrote me a

note later that day saying “I still can’t believe I

was able to do that all by myself. I’m so

excited!”

This opportunity motivated me to learn more about

nutrition specifically for diabetics and has made me

consider specializing in this area.

From My Journal

“I have noticed that there is a strong bond between the staff

and campers and among the campers themselves because

they understand each other’s struggles and everyday

challenges with diabetes. They really have a great support

and sense of community here. ”

.

Camp Leadership Session at Teen Week

The last night of camp they have a closing

ceremony where “Taps” is sang and candles are

lit around a circle one at a time. This signifies

the unity gained that week at camp and helps

them remember how important each individual

is. Like the small flame that was passed from

person to person that eventually lit up the entire

circle, our lives can have a great impact on

others when we share our talents and friendship.
