    DEFINATION

EDGE stands for Enhanced Data rates forGSM Evolution. EDGE is most talked abouttechnology in mobile communicationtechnologies in recent times and it turn out tobe the evolution of most widely used GSMtechnology.

EDGE technology facilitates better datatransmission rates with improved spectrumefficiency and the best part of EDGE iscapability of supporting new applications andimproved mobile communication capabilities.

EDGE can also be known as extended version ofGPRS therefore it is also called EGPRS.

    EDGE TECHNOLOGY

EDGE is enhanced technology for 2G, 2.5generation systems, GSM and GPRSnetworks. It makes deployment of EDGEtechnology that much easier for mobile

companies. It does not require any upgradation in hardware, software or anychanges in GSM network.

EDGE supported transceiver are required tobe installed, base station system are also

required to be upgrade to support EDGE. About 90% of mobile operator companies

support EDGE through out the world.

    EDGE VS GPRS

EDGE and GRPS technologies havesimilarities in it, these two technologieshave same symbol rate, althoughmodulation bit rates are different.

EDGE technology can deliver three timesfaster bit rate ratio comparing to GPRS ingiven time, this is how EDGE transmit atbetter rate.

GPRS can transfer data at rates of 115 kbpstheoretically and up to 160 kbps onphysical layer, where as EDGE/EGRPS cantransfer up to 384 kbps on physical layer

    and 473.6 kbps theoretically.

    EDGE

EDGE Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution

    EDGE is add-on to GPRS

Uses 8-PSK modulation in good conditions

    Increase throughput by 3x (8-PSK 3 bits/symbol vs GMSK 1bit/symbol)

Offer data rates of 384kbps, theoretically up to 473.6kbps

Uses 9 Modulation coding schemes (MCS1-9) MCS(1-4) uses GMSK, while MCS(5-9) uses 8PSK modulation.

    Uses Link adaptation algorithm

    Modulation Bit rate 810kbps

Radio data rate per time slot 69.2kbps

User data rate per time slot 59.2kbps (MCS9) User data rate (8 time slots) 473.6kbps

New handsets / terminal equipment; additional hardware in the BTS, Corenetwork and the rest remains the same

EDGE access develops to connect to 3G core

ADVANTAGES The good and practical aspect of implementing Edge technology is its

adaptability to the existing system like GPRS, HSCSD (high speedcircuit switched data) and specifications; it does not require newsystems to be developed for deploying it.

EDGE/EGPRS can be operated on existing frequency spectrum that is

    800MHz, 1800 MHz and 1900 MHz.

EGPRS/EDGE is cost effective when it comes installing it on thenetwork, it requires small units of improvement and enhancementson existing network.

The most obvious advantage of EDGE is it provides thrice as better

    speed as GPRS does.

It Improve performance of existing applications and room for new

ConclusionEDGE is a 3G technology offering a common migration path and convergence

    for GSM and TDMA operators.

EDGE Compact can be deployed with < 2x 1 MHz of spectrum

EDGE supports IP packet data at peak rates > 384 kbps

Voice over IP is planned for EDGE R2000 standards
