One parent noted that he/she did not like the format we used for the Assessment and Learning Goals Sheet. It’s important to remember that this was not intended to be a full report; it was to show you how students had achieved in their February assess- ments and what the learning goals were that led on from these. We will review the format used for this later in the year in readiness for 2012. Please also note that Jackie, Jenny and I do attend a conference meeting in each class to moderate how these are going across the school. Our attendance at these is not planned unless particularly requested by either family or teacher. For example, I began with the Year Five/Six team and made my way around each class, sitting in one meeting per class. It was also great to receive positive feedback regard- ing student participation. This is a relatively new in- troduction across NZ schools as our government wants all students to be able to talk about their cur- rent learning, what their next steps are and how they might achieve their goals. Your Feedback: Term One Three-way Conferences

Thank you to the sixty-three parents who responded to our evaluation of these conferences. Not all re-spondents commented on every area. Overall most of those providing feedback were happy with the meet-ings as the table below shows.

Teachers and teams will be receiving a summary of your views. One parent noted that he/she did not like the format we used for the Assessment and Learning Goals Sheet. It’s important to remember that this was not intended to be a full report; it was to show you how students had achieved in their February assess-ments and what the learning goals were that led on from these.

It was also great to receive positive feedback regard-ing student participation. This is a relatively new in-troduction across NZ schools as our government

wants all students to be able to talk about their cur-rent learning, what their next steps are and how they might achieve their goals.

Thank you once again for your feedback, this was very

useful.

Mid-year Reporting

UPCOMING EVENTS in Term Three

Art Festival and Art-a-Thon

The Art Festival will take place 20-22 September. There will be an exhibition of students’ art, a silent auction and three

days of special events to celebrate visual art. We are looking for artists who would like to visit our school, or “famous”

locals who would be prepared to create a special piece of artwork for our silent auction. If you would like to be involved

in supporting our Art Festival celebrations please contact Jackie Procter (Deputy Principal Y1-3) or leave a message with

Zoe at the office.

The Art-a-thon is our major school fundraising event for 2011. We wish to raise money to purchase further equipment

in the areas of Visual Art, the ‘Food for Thought’ programme and Literacy. Our aim is to match the amount raised in

2010. Art-a-Thon packs, questions and sponsorship forms will be sent home on Friday 8 July. This will allow students

plenty of time over the holidays to collect sponsors and to research and learn the answers to the Art-a-Thon questions.

Students will be tested in Week 2 of Term 3 and sponsorship money will need to be collected by Week 6 (5-9 September).

Thank you for your support with this major fundraiser this year. Our students are looking forward to showing you some

of the amazing artwork they have completed this year.

STREP THROAT

A number of our school community have

been recently diagnosed with Strep Throat.

We have been notified by a local doctor

that if your child shows signs of, or com-

plains about a sore throat and also has a

fever you should seek medical advice.

Please keep children at home as this will

prevent the spread of infection.

WANTED: Glass Jars with Lids

If you have any, please

bring them to Room 11.

Thanks!

A report on Motorbikes — by Andrew, Room 4

A motorbike is part of the wheel or vehicle group.

Other members of the vehicle are a truck, a car and

a tank.

Motorbikes come in different colours. They have two

wheels, handles, an engine, a gas tank a motor and

brakes. Gas tanks help it run.

Motorbikes are found parked outside shops, police

stations, and on roads and motorways. They are of-

ten found in garages.

Motorbikes do lots of

things like stunts but the

main thing is they get

you somewhere fast.

They can chase cattle and

they can take two people.

Motorbikes are cool

things to ride and they

are really interesting.

Open Evening this year for Year 6 students, and their parents, who are interested in Balmoral as a possible Intermediate for 2012 will be held on Tuesday 5 July, beginning at 6:30pm. For those who are available to attend during the day we will be holding an Open Day the same week, Thursday 7 July, from 9:15am – 12:15pm.

On both occasions we will give Year 6 students an opportunity to see how things are done the Balmoral Way and to ask questions so they and their parents can make an informed decision about which Intermediate they would like to attend next year.

We certainly welcome all, and will be accepting some applications for out of zone enrolments. These are due no later than Tuesday 27 September and a ballot will be held if necessary, on Tuesday 4 October. The priority order for the ballot is:

1. Siblings of current students 2. Siblings of previous students 3. Children of former students 4. Children of staff / BoT members 5. General ballot
