THE EDENDALE EXPERIENCE: THINKING, LEARNING, CREATING
27 June 2012
Next issue: 25 July 2012
Principal’s Message Kia ora, Kia orana, Namaste, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Ni hao ma, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Asalam alikum!
Farewell
Friday, 29 June is Sangita Parbhu’s last day at Edendale as she is leaving to teach at another Auckland school; we know she’s looking forward to less travel each day! Our very best wishes go with Sangita and we wish her the very best for her new teaching experiences and the future.
Last week, Ahi Pere resigned from teaching at Edendale for personal reasons; she has been on leave for the past month. We also wish Ahi the very best for the future.
Appointments and Welcome
Sixty further teachers applied for a Y0-1 and a Y2 position when they were re-advertised; we were able to short list four candidates and make three appointments.
Next term we will be delighted to welcome the two new teachers to Edendale who will be joining our team for the final two terms of this year. Shannon Andrews will be teaching our newest Y0-1 class in Room 29. Kirsten Ngan will be teaching in Room 9 in Y2.
Special congratulations to Stephanie Burgess who is currently relieving in Room 20 and has won the Y2 position in Kabila team to start in January 2013.
Three-way Conferences
Thank you so much to our parents and caregivers who came along to Three-way conferences earlier in the week. We believe it’s important to hold these as soon as possible after families receive reports so that students and teachers can share current learning information and you can ask questions. Overall team attendance was as follows:
Hui and Fono
Tuesday night was a busy one for our Maori families many of whom were unable to attend our Hui so we are pleased to reset the date as Tuesday 31 July from 5:30-6:30pm. Team leaders will contact all families early next term.
We had a great response to our Fono; thank to the many families who came along to share discussions about student learning, ask questions and provide us with feedback. We are pleased that the achievement booklets were useful and hope that you take up our offer to hear more about achievement information at up-coming meetings as we discussed.
We will hold end-of-year Hui and Fono in November; more information later.
Community Survey
Thank you to the thirty-six parents who have responded to our community survey to date; we appreciate your feedback. We do hope that many more of you choose to complete the survey; if you would like to complete it at school, please call Zoe in the office and she will arrange a time for you to use a computer. If you would like a paper copy, please telephone Chriss in the office and she will organise a copy to go home with your child.
Please note that the intention of the survey is for families to provide constructive feedback and ask questions about life and learning at Edendale. Please make an appointment to come and have a chat if you have issues or concerns that really worry you. You can also add your name to one of the comment boxes with a contact phone number if you wish to have one of our senior leaders contact you.
Have a safe and enjoyable holiday!
Our teachers will be participating in a professional development programme during the term break; the focus of this will be continued development or our ‘Teaching as Inquiry' at Edendale School. This profes-sional development programme is in its third year and is led by well-known educator Jan Hill from The Education Group.

Garden to Table It’s a wrap Term Two’s Garden to Table classes are now all completed. Last fortnight’s kitchen classes used the great winter staple spinach to make Greek dolmades. The leaves wrapped a yummy mix of cooked rice, spices and herbs (from our garden, of course), that were then cooked in pureed tomatoes. They were gobbled up very enthusiastically! Newly made beds You may have noticed the three new raised planter boxes outside Room 22. These new additions to Garden to Table have been donated to the school by Marketplace Media, we would like to thank them for their kind donation. In Term Three the garden classes will plant up these beds, preparing for a bumper spring crop. New arrival As you arrive through the front gates you may notice some changes (see the office foyer). The plan Opus has sketched up is now being put into place, starting with a Griselinia hedge. It’s an exciting step towards the front of the school going green. Griselinia is a native plant, low maintenance and clips nicely to form a dense attractive hedge. The Garden to Table team and volunteers have helped get it started, now we’ll like some help to complete it. Everyone’s welcome to be involved! Please con-tact Kim if you are interested [email protected] Stay tuned for more cooking and gardening news in Term Three. Jodie, Sarah and Kim

Edendale Student Code
I am an Edendale student. Therefore, I show respect to everyone; I am kind to others; I behave in a sensible
way. I take care of my school, my belongings and the environment. I am honest and reliable; I am responsible
for my actions. I have fun with my learning; I participate at school and try my very best!
The Orchard Today, my class, room 12 went to the Orchard. My friend Jessica and I were interested in the caterpillars. Last term we saw crab apples. I wonder where they are gone now! We adopted a tree in a big, wooden pot. The name of the tree that we adopted is called ‘The Mandarin Sweetie’. By Heather—Rm12 Where does Natural Food Comes from? First, vegetables grow in farms. Then it is taken to the packing centre. Then they get picked by big trucks or sometimes small trucks and taken to the supermarket. We buy vegetables from the supermarket. By Jessica—Rm12 Making Juice This is how to make juice. First, we plant tiny orange seeds. Next, it will grow into an orange tree. Later, we pick the oranges from the tree. After that, we squeeze the oranges to make juice. By Poppy—Rm12
Adopt a Tree As part of the Food for Thought programme classes are able to
adopt one of the fruit trees that have been planted around our
school. This is to help the volunteers look after them and a fun
way of teaching the children how to grow and care for fruit trees.
Room 10 have adopted Tree No.18 a Mandarin Sweetie. Mandarin Sweetie
Today Room 10 went outside and measured our mandarin tree.
It was 92cm and it has no mandarins on it. We are adopting this
tree.
By Jason—Rm10 Mandarin Sweetie Tree
This morning the class went to check on our tree we have
adopted. Our tree is number 18. It is ninety two cm. Our tree
has no mandarins. We looked at a bud and it had a tiny little
mandarin.
By Marcelle—Rm10 Mandarin Sweetie
A Mandarin Sweetie is a type of tree that has mandarins on it. It
is ninety two cm and it has a bar holding it underneath it.
Mandarins are a fruit that comes from a tree that is different
from other trees. We look after our tree, it is special to me. It
had a number 18 on it.
By Rob—Rm10 Adopting a Tree
We went outside and measured our Mandarin Sweetie. It was
ninety two cm tall. The Mandarin Sweetie was number eighteen.
No mandarins were ripe. There were about twenty two buds on
it. There were flowers, these are the baby mandarins. The baby
mandarins weren’t ripe yet so we couldn’t have a taste of one.

Matariki Last week it was Matariki and Matariki is very special. it is a special day for Maori peo-ple Matariki is special because in the sky at night there are seven stars and those seven stars are the seven sisters. Matariki is also the Maori New Year. When it is Matariki it is a time for Maori people to celebrate the beginning of their new year. By Nicole—Rm9 Matariki Matariki is a group of seven stars. They disappear in late April and come back in early June. Matariki is also the Maori New Year, like Chinese celebrate the lantern festival. The seven sisters are the seven stars. The Maori celebrate Matariki by catching fish and Kaimoana, carving and weaving, making and flying kites, planting trees and winter crops, learning about the land and how to look after it and sharing family stories. By Beth-Anne—Rm9 Matariki Last Thursday was a special day because it was Matariki. The stars disappeared in late April. The Maori people celebrate, fish and gather Kaimoana. After they have celebrated they look at the seven stars By Benjamin—Rm9

PLAYBALL
HOLIDAY PROGRAMME
Playball is a sport and movement programme for 2-8 year olds. The main objective of Playball is not to create superstars, but rather to provide children with the
opportunity to develop a host of necessary social, educational and personal skills. By giving children competence in sport, they will develop skills that are not associated with sport at all. From a child's perspective the most important element of our programme is fun! For many children their Playball lesson is the highlight of their week! For more information visit www.playball.co.nz
