SECTION I. Some brief information about Ukraine

Location

Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. It has an area of 603,628 km2 (233,062 sq

mi), making it the largest country entirely within Europe. Ukraine borders Russia to

the east, northeast and south, Belarus to the northwest, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary

to the west, Romania and Moldova to the southwest, and the Black Sea and Sea of

Azov to the south and southeast, respectively.

A brief history of Ukraine

Ukraine was first populated by nomadic tribes such as the Cimmerians, Scythians,

and the Goths. Both Greece and Rome established cities in the Ukraine when at the

peak of their empires. In the 10th century, the Kievan Rus emerged as a growing city-

state based out of the city of Kiev. By the 11th century the Kieven Rus was the

largest empire in Europe. With the rule of Vladimir the Great in 980, the Kievan Rus

became a Christian empire and reached its peak under the rule of his son, Yaroslav

the Wise. In the 12th century the empire began to decline and in the 13th century

Mongol raiders destroyed the city of Kiev. In later years, the Ukraine would become

Page 3: Ects package

3

part of other countries, first Poland and later Russia. The Ukrainians made efforts to

keep their culture alive despite limits imposed on them by Russia. Russia even

banned the use and study of the Ukrainian language. When the Soviet Union took

over, things became even worse. Joseph Stalin created an artificial famine to maintain

control of the area which killed millions of people. World War II did not make things

better for the Ukraine. It is estimated that the German Nazi's killed 1 million

Ukrainian Jewish people. Yet another disaster struck the Ukraine in 1986 when the

Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded. The Soviet Union tried to hide the disaster

and refused international help. Finally, the Soviet Union collapsed and Ukraine

became an independent country in 1991. The capital of Ukraine is Kyiv.

Climate

Ukraine has a mostly temperate continental climate, although the southern coast has a

humid subtropical climate. Precipitation is disproportionately distributed; it is highest

in the west and north and lowest in the east and southeast. Western Ukraine receives

around 1,200 millimetres (47.2 in) of precipitation annually, while Crimea receives

around 400 millimetres (15.7 in). Winters vary from cool along the Black Sea to cold

farther inland. Average annual temperatures range from 5.5–7 °C (41.9–44.6 °F) in

the north, to 11–13 °C (51.8–55.4 °F) in the south.

Tourism

Ukraine occupies 8th place in Europe by the number of tourists visiting, according to

the World Tourism Organisation rankings, due to its numerous tourist attractions:

mountain ranges suitable for skiing, hiking and fishing: the Black Sea coastline as a

popular summer destination; nature reserves of different ecosytems; churches, castle

ruins and other architectural and park landmarks; various outdoor activity points.

Kiev, Lviv, Odessa, Kamyanets-Podilskyi and Yalta are Ukraine's principal tourist

centers each offering many historical landmarks as well as formidable hospitality

Some brief information about Cherkasy

Location

The city of Cherkasy is located in southeastern Ukraine, in the district of Kiev. It is

approximately 200 km (124 mi) from Kiev. It has one of the largest ports on the right

bank of the Dneiper river. The Kremenchuk reservoir is located here. It has been the

chief town of the Cossacks since the twelfth century. Today it is the capital of the

Cherkasy region. There is an airport there, which has many connections to the major

cities of Ukraine. There is a railroad that has many connections to all parts of

Ukraine. There are many highways in the area, most of which have hard surfaces.

Cherkasy now and yesterday

This region was first settled about 40 thousand years ago, during the Paleolithic

period. There have been archeological discoveries showing the way of life in this

period. The mighty feudal state of Kievan Rus originated here. Christianity was

introduced in the year 988, by prince Vladimir. The Orthodox Church rapidly gained

power and influence. The city of Cherkasy was founded in the end of the thirteenth

century. Cherkasy is first mentioned in documents in 1394, as the fortified city,

which protected the principality of Kiev of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, from the

Tartars of Crimea. The region was captured by Lithuanian and Polish feudal lords

from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries; but belonged to Poland, after the Union of

Lublin in 1569, and was the seat of their local rulers. It was an important defense

outpost against the surprise attacks by the Tartars, and in 1532 withstood a 30-day

siege by the Crimean armies, of Khan Seaet-Geiri. The strong oppression from

foreign landlords and frequent enemy raids caused the appearance of Cossacks. The

first Cossack settlement appeared here in the fifteenth century. The Glory Hill Castle

was then erected, by the Tartars, for reasons of defense and is still standing (now on

its side). Then it became an important trade center on the routes to Moscow and

Crimea. The city became a Cossack center, as many Cossacks settled there and were

the majority of its population. It subsequently became their capital until the middle of

the 17-century; for then about 1000 Cossacks lived in the area. Therefore it played an

important part in the Cossack uprisings against Poland, which were followed by, the

War of Liberation (1648-54) against the Polish magistrates. Khmelnitsky led this

uprising, and the result was the unification of the Ukraine with Russia Khmelnitsky

then moved the Cossack capital to the city of Chigerin. Many Jewish communities in

the Ukraine were destroyed and many Jews in this respective area were murdered.

One of his aims was the eradicating of the Jews from Ukraine. The decision of

reuniting Russia with Ukraine was made on January 8, 1654 at the Pereyaslav Rada

(Council). Cherkasy was a regimental city in the district of Kiev, until 1686. After the

Treaty of Andrusovo, in 1667, Cherkasy was under Polish rule. In 1793, Cherkasy

Page 7: Ects package

became part of the Russian empire, and was included in the Pale, because of the

division of Poland. In 1797, it became the center of the Kiev district of Russia.

Cherkasy, as part of the Ukraine, and with activity of the Decembrists, took an active

part in the Patriotic War of 1812. In the second half of the 19-century, industry

began developing in Cherkasy. This was especially true after the construction of the

railroad. Capitalism developed rapidly in the area, because of the Bourgeois Reform

of 1861. In 1854, a sugar factory was established and in 1878, a tobacco factory was

established. Sugar refining became the leading industry in this area. Other factories

and plants were established. In the beginning of the 20-century, capitalism also

developed in agriculture. The struggle against czarism in the 1870's strove to raise the

peasantry to capture the land and become free. Then Marx’s teachings and

revolutionary activity began to spread in the Ukraine. Cherkasy became a center of

industry and trade in the beginning of the 20-century. Financial aid came with the

founding of the Committee for Savings and Loans, which was founded in 1907 and

had seventy stockholders.

By the beginning of January 1909, there were 857 stockholders, and a fund of 8676

rubles. Loans were issued to merchants, tradesman, clerks and independent workers

The workers of the sugar factory in Cherkasy went on strike in the summer of 1905.

The Bolshevik activity in the area became very intensive in the summer of 1917. This

is also referred to as The Civil War.48 The Ukraine was declared a Soviet Republic

in December 1917. The sugar industry prospered. Industry and especially the food

industry and light industry were expanded during the First Five-Year Plan. Many new

schools, on all levels, were opened. In 1941, residents proudly became proudly

soldiers of the Red Army. Battles in this area began in July 1941. The area was

captured in August- September 1941, and a regime of terror and violence was

established. A concentration camp was set up near Uman, where tens of thousands of

people were murdered. Partisans, secret Party district committees, and patriotic

groups functioned in the area. Cherkasy was liberated, after fierce battles, on

December 14, 1943. Then Cherkasy became a distict.

Today Cherkasy is a big city, and an important economic and cultural center. The

main types of industry are: the chemical complex, founded in 1964; a synthetic fibers

and thread factory, founded in 1958; a chemical reagents plant; a light industry silk

complex, founded in 1965; factories producing knitted fabric, clothing, hygroscopic

cotton wool and fine leather products; the machine building industry, which includes

equipment for the food industry and an auto repair plant; the food industry, which

includes a sugar refinery, dairy products, a brewery and canneries for fruits and

vegetables, which were founded in 1936; and the construction industry, which

includes reinforced concrete bricks, silicate bricks, and housing construction; tobacco

plants, founded in 1878; handicrafts, etc. There is an electronic power station in the

area, which has been operated by transforming water power since 1972. As a cultural

center, Cherkasy is the home of a philharmonic orchestra, a drama theater, a puppet

theater, a concert hall, a planetarium, and a regional museum which was established

in 1918. The oblast newspaper CHERKASY PRAVDA, is published in Cherkasy.

The poet V. Symonenko lived and wrote in Cherkasy. Cherkasy is a modern and

well-planned city. It was built according to several comprehensive plans. These were

carried out in 1932, 1950, and 1962-65 by the Kiev Dnipromisto construction firm.

As far as architecture goes, the finer public buildings in the city, which were erected

between 1959-1971, are the House of Soviets, the Music and Drama Theater, the

Turyst Hotel, the railway station and the covered farm market. The Sosnivka health

resort for treating tuberculosis of the lungs and bones is located in a pine forest south

of the city, on the Dnieper River. Cherkasy became the capital of the Cherkasy oblast

in 1954. A rapid growth in the population was caused by these economic, cultural,

and industrial developments. The Cherkasy oblast lies on both banks of the Dnieper

River. This is an agrarian-industrial region. Agricultural specialization is in grain,

sugar beets, meat and dairy cattle. There are many collective and state farms. Industry

specialization is in food, machinery, metal work, chemicals and light industry.

Industrial crops are sugar beets and sunflowers. There are many railroad tracks and

possibilities for connections. Tourism is an important industry because of the

picturesque right bank of the Dnieper River and the reservoir.

center in the rapid development at that time most needed were civil engineers.

Therefore, from May 20, 1961 Cherkasy Technical Faculty was subordinated to the

Kiev Institute of Civil Engineering. Then enrolled in the Faculty of about 500

students. In 1963, was the first graduation. Students after a three-year study period

were transferred to continue their education in other higher educational institutions of

Ukraine. In 1969 - 1970 years at the expense of the chemical industry of the regional

center was built two educational buildings, which are now functioning as a buildings

number 2 and 3. In the seventies of the last century on the evening and extramural

enrolled of about 1,200 students. It was created the day preparatory department.

Number of full-time teachers increased to 28. There were three chairs: the

humanities, general engineering and scientific disciplines. November 10, 1977 order

of the Minister of Higher and Secondary Special Education number 370 faculty was

reorganized into the Cherkasy branch of the Kiev Institute of Civil Engineering. In

addition to general technical, was created Civil Engineering Department, was the

beginning of specialty "Industrial and civil construction" with evening classes. At that

time in the branch on two faculties enrollment more than 1500 students, of which

about 800 - by extramural studies, and nearly 750 - evening classes. There were five

departments: Marxism-Leninism and technical disciplines, mathematics, physics and

chemistry and building. Half of the teaching staff had academic degrees and academic

titles. Educational facilities of the branch increased from year to year: two

educational and laboratory buildings, 12 laboratories, library, dining room, buffet and

two student dormitories. December 1, 1979 Cherkasy branch of the Kiev Institute of

Civil Engineering is subject to the Kiev Polytechnic Institute, which has made radical

changes in his profile. Began training the various sectors of the national economy. In

1983 was put into operation a new teaching and laboratory building (now building

number 1), so that increased study area, improve the technical equipment of

laboratories, offices. Structural changes took place: eliminate the evening department,

expanded mechanical and developed an instrument-making. At this time, began its

work the faculty of working with foreign students. In 1990. was built teaching and

laboratory building number 4. July 26, 1991 at the request of the governing bodies of

The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)

The European credit transfer system (ECTS) has been applied within the framework

of the Erasmus programme. ECTS is a system for the commensurability and

comparison between educational mechanisms in different universities and countries

that participate in international academic exchange.

“Credit” in the ECTS context represents a unit of work that the student must

complete in connection with his/her education in a specific subject in order to

successfully complete a semester or an academic year. Most frequently, credits

represent the time spent by the student for the preparation of a given discipline,

attendance at lectures and self-study assignments.

Page 21: Ects package

Cherkasy State Technological University: ECTS Package

21

“The Grade” represents an index of student achievement when sitting an examination

or implementing a concrete task, where different assessment systems are applied

within different member states within the framework of the European Union. All of

them are equated to ECTS standards, in this way securing equal representation

amongst students from different European countries.

Marks awarded at the Cherkasy State Technological University are awarded on a

scale of 0-100 (100 being the highest). This corresponds to grades F-A.

"Excellent" - A (90-100 points) put, if the main issues are disclosed at a high

theoretical and practical levels, the student is guided without complications in the

material, fully respond to additional questions. The quality of the responses indicates

proficiency in the material of lectures and workshops, as well as familiarization with

additional material on a subject.

"Good" - B, C (74-89 points) put, if disclosed basic questions, and additional

questions the student answers are not completely. The quality of the responses reveals

fluency in lectures and practical material. Familiarization with additional sources is

not systematized.

"Satisfactory" - D, E (60-73 points) put, if the student has only a general conceptual

apparatus, it is generally oriented in the study subject, but the disclosure of the main

issues permits significant errors.

"Disappointing" with the possibility of re retake - FX (35-59 points) put, if a student

makes fundamental errors in the answers, can not give reasonable answers to basic

questions of the teacher, not versed in the basic theoretical and practical positions of

the course, or not learned some sections of the course.

"Disappointing" with obligatory repeated course - F (1-34 points) - the lack of any

understanding of the teaching material.

Assessing students' knowledge in academic subjects, which form the final control is

the examination, carried out on the basis of a modular and final control of knowledge

(examination). The maximum number of points that a student can get the results of

Page 22: Ects package

Cherkasy State Technological University: ECTS Package

22

modular control, can not exceed 60. If the results of at least one of the modular

control student received less than 30 points, he is not allowed for the exam.

Exam results are evaluated from 0 to 40 points. The exam is considered passed if the

student scored at least 20 points. In the case where the student’s answers are

estimated less than 20 points, he gets a failing grade on the exam results and poor

overall final grade. In this case, the results of modular control are not considered.

The student is not allowed to a semester control on a specific discipline, if he failed to

comply with all kinds of work, tasks under the work program of the discipline in the

semester. In this case, the teacher in the statement of accounting academic records

"not allowed", which is equivalent to an academic debt. Non-admission of the student

to a semester control on a specific academic discipline can not be the reason for

refusing entry to its control in other disciplines.

Re-examinations are allowed no more than two times for each discipline: once the

teacher, the second - a commission, created order of the dean of faculty. The

committee consists of the head (master teacher) of the department and faculty

appropriate department, and a representative of the dean's office (dean, vice-dean).
