Hosting Institution

WelcomeThe ECSS and the National Institute of Physical Edu-cation of Catalonia (INEFC) are delighted to inviteECSS delegates to Barcelona in the summer of 2013.

In this “coming of age”anniversary of the ECSSCongress, we would liketo provide global viewsand stress the big pictureof Sport Science so as tohelp develop the speciali-zed areas.

The latest advances in technology, mathematical mo-deling and computational possibilities have led to anew body of scientific disciplines that can cope withthe complexity of sports, a privileged area for develo-ping science in our society.

Our main aim will be to contribute to the mutual un-derstanding between the various fields and foster thetransfer of theoretical explanatory principles, techni-ques and insights between disciplines.

We look forward to seeing you in Barcelona 2013. Carlota Torrents & Natàlia BalaguéCongress Presidents

VenueThe congress takes place at the campus of INEFC rightnext door to the Olympic stadium located on top ofMontjuïc hill overlooking Barcelona to one side and apanoramic view of the harbour on the other. A feast forthe senses, Catalonia´s capital has a distinctly Medi-terranean feel. Its revitalization for the 1992 Olympicsmade Barcelona the place to be on the continent. Cos-mopolitan, modern, welcoming, Barcelona has it all!

Young Investigators AwardOne of the key objectives of the ECSS is thepromotion of junior scientists and the foste-ring of state-of-the-art research. For this

purpose the ECSS established the Young Investiga-tors Award (YIA), sponsored with generous cash pri-zes by its founding partner Mars Inc.

In Barcelona young scientists have again the opportu-nity of entering this prestigious competition for scien-tific excellence, where outstanding scientific work canbe presented at the annual congress. A jury consistingof the ECSS Scientific Board and ECSS Scientific Com-mittee grants the awards based upon an oral and po-ster presentation for the top ten presentationsrespectively.

Travel InformationBy Plane: Barcelona has a large international and domestic airport with frequent direct flights from most inter-

national destinations. More than 125 airlines operate from Barcelona International Airport (BCN), beingonly 20 minutes away from the congress venue.

By Tain: The high-speed train AVE connects Barcelona with the European rail network via Madrid within 2.5 hours.

By Car: Barcelona may be reached from several destinations. It is approximately a 90 minute drive from theFrench boarder to Barcelona.

Public transportation around BarcelonaBarcelona has an excellent underground system including eight metro lines, a frequent bus network and more than11,000 reasonably priced taxis. We encourage our attendees to use public transportation.

AccommodationAs tourists throughout the year intensively visit Barcelona, the ECSS has negotiated a large number of hotelrooms at attractive rates in several categories of hotel ranging from budget to 5 star hotels. These rates are onlyavailable through the congress website. You will find that all of these hotels offer quality lodging including break-fast. Most hotels have car park facilities. Barcelona is also very popular with youngsters and a large number ofcheap youth hostels are located nearby, providing the delegates a general impression of Barcelonas’ architectu-ral and historic splendour. The majority of the hotels are located within walking distance to the congress venue.
