TWO STUDENTS FROM THE SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS (SOE) bagged top awards in the 17th ASEAN and 6th ASEAN+3 Educational Forum and Young Speakers’ Contest hosted by the University Scholars Programme of the National University of Singapore last May 22-25. BS Applied Economics major Dominique Hannah Sy won first place in the Young Speakers’ Contest, beating the other top five finalists from Japan, Thailand, China, Indonesia, and Singapore. In her speech, she tackled her role as a leader of the country in promoting unity among the ASEAN+3 to face global uncertainties. The DLSU representative for the educational forum, BS in Applied Economics and BS in Applied Corporate Management student Micah Fernando, was a member of the team that was recognized as the Best Working Group. He was one of the three writers that drafted an eight-page joint amendment regarding current issues on the economy, environment, and security. It was the first time that Philippine delegates won two out of three major awards in the competition. Fernando and Sy were mentored by Engr. Albert Lamberte, a faculty member of SOE. The events provided a platform for students from the ASEAN region and ‘Plus Three’ countries (China, Japan, and Korea) to discuss and explore regional issues. The theme for the 2017 forum and contest was “ASEAN+3 in an Era of Global Uncertainty: Responses and Challenges.” Eco students win top awards in ASEAN+3 events THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (NAST) recognized De La Salle University researchers for their exemplary contributions to their respective fields. LAST JUNE 1, A REQUIEM MASS AS WELL AS HONORING RITES were held for the late Ambassador Alfonso T. Yuchengco. A plaque of recognition was posthumously presented to the Ambassador’s family during the honoring rites. Attendees of the proceedings include the former ambassador’s family, De La Salle University President Br. Raymundo Suplido FSC, Edgar Chua, DLSU Board of Trustees Chair, former President Fidel Ramos, former Prime Minister Dr. Cesar Virata, and former Philippine Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and University Fellow Dr. Wilfrido Villacorta. Other

attendees were the Yuchengco Center Board of Trustees, the De La Salle Brothers, and University administrators.

A member of high school class ’40, the ambassador was an advocate for education and close partner of the University, helping in the construction of the Don Enrique T. Yuchengco Hall and aiding in the establishment of the think tank Yuchengco Center.

He was one of the country’s leading industrialists and served as one of its top diplomats, having served as ambassador to both China and Japan and was a Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Due to these and

other accomplishments, the University awarded him with an honorary doctorate in business management, honoris causa, in 1982.

THE US EMBASSY IN THE PHILIPPINES, in coordination with De La Salle University’s Br. Alfred Shields FSC Ocean Research (SHORE) Center, Conservation International (CI) Philippines, and the local government of Lian, Batangas, organized a coastal clean up last June 6 at DLSU’s partner community in Sitio Kayreyna.

The embassy invited international expert on solid waste and environmental engineer Dr. Jenna Jambeck from the University of Georgia to visit the Philippines and learn more about the

country’s current problem in marine debris, particularly plastic. The Philippines is said to be the third in the list of countries with the most ocean plastic pollution.

After the clean up, Jambeck, SHORE Center Director Dr. Emmanuel Garcia, and representatives from CI Philippines and the local government, gave brief lectures to the residents of Sitio Kayreyna on the current state of Talim Bay in Lian and provided practical tips on how to lessen plastic pollution.

Dr. Krista Danielle Yu from the School of Economics was named one of this year’s NAST Outstanding Young Scientists. Yu was selected for “her scientific contributions in the field of disaster risk analysis, particularly for the development and application of economic modeling frameworks to assess direct and indirect socioeconomic impacts of disruptive natural events.” Two researchers also took top prizes in the NAST Talent Search for Young Scientists. Dr. Rafael Espiritu from the Chemistry Department placed 2nd for his paper entitled “Interaction between the Marine Sponge Cyclic Peptide Theonellamide A and Sterols in Lipid Bilayers As Viewed

by Surface Plasmon Resonance and Solid-State 2H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.” Dr. Argel Bandala from the Electronics & Communications Engineering Department placed 3rd for his work, “Implementation of Varied Particle Container for Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics – Based Aggregation for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Quadrotor Swarm.” NAST is the country’s premier recognition and advisory body in science and technology. The organization is mandated to recognize outstanding S & T achievements, provide incentives and support for Philippine scientists, and engage in projects or programs designed to foster scientific productivity.

THE BALAY PROGRAM, THE UNIVERSITY’S COMMUNITY-BUILDING INITIATIVE involving members of both the DLSU Manila and Laguna campuses, will have a culture and arts festival on July 28.

DLSU Vice President for Lasallian Mission Br. Michael Broughton FSC, in a recent announcement, encouraged administrators, faculty members, and staff of the various Balays to join the competitions. Each of the groups–Balay Benilde, Balay Miguel, Balay Mutien, and Balay Solomon–is composed of more than 400 members or one-fourth of the Lasallian community.

The initial run of the festival will comprise a photography contest and exhibit dubbed

“Aming DLSU, Aming Balay”, choral singing competition “Himig Balay”, and dance competition “Indak ng Makabagong Pilipino.” For the photography contest, the entries will be accepted until June 15, 2017. Each participant is allowed to submit one entry only in any of the categories. For the choir competition, each Balay shall form a choir with a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 32 members, including singers, conductor, and instrumentalists. For the dance competition, each group shall be composed of a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 30 dancers who will perform a fusion of various dance genres that shall highlight Filipino culture.

A FULL-TIME PROFESSOR IN LUNGHWA UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN TAIWAN and an adjunct professor of De La Salle University, Dr. Ming-Lang Tseng, delivered a talk entitled, “Doing Research to Advance the Theory and Practice of Operations Management,” last June 2 at the Tereso Lara Seminar Room of St. La Salle Hall.

Hosted by the Decision Sciences and Innovation Department of the Ramon V. del Rosario College of Business, the seminar dealt with bridging the theory and practice of operations management through research using management science modeling, information technology, and analytics.

He discussed strategic mechanisms of doing research involving the “debate-contribution-findings” research technique as well as the types of research that appear to be in keeping with the new thrust of Operations Management.

The professor currently serves as associate editor of the Journal of Cleaner Production and associate editor of Management of Environmental Quality: an international journal, as well as an editorial board member of ISI journals. He is also on the trustee board of several international organizations and president of Chinese Institute of Innovation Management and Development in Taiwan.
