University Fellow named Outstanding World Researcher 2014

NAST ACADEMICIAN AND UNIVERSITY

FELLOW DR. ALVIN CULABA WAS

HONORED by the International

Association of Multidisciplinary Research

(IAMURE) by naming him this year’s

Outstanding World Researcher.

The awarding ceremony, which was part

of the 2014 World Research Festival,

took place last May 1 at the Radisson

Blu Hotel in Cebu City.

The Outstanding World Researcher

Award is given every year to researchers

who have global research contributions

through scientific articles in international

journal publications, speakership and

lectureship engagements in research,

social responsibility to the scientific

community as editor and peer reviewer

in national and international journals, and

an H-Index of 15. Criteria for judging

include international publication, citation

count, and social responsibility.

This year’s panel of judges included

noted professors and researchers

Dr. Pedro Bernaldes of Osaka University,

Dr. Jose Martinez of University of Puerto

Rico, Dr. Masheshvari Naidu of University

of Kwazulu- Natal, Dr. Moktar Lamari of

University of Quebec, and Dr. Djuwari of

STIE Perbanas Surabaya.

DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF LAW AND THINC OFFICE

CORP. LAUNCHED the first Law and Technology Hub in the

country, dubbed “MyLegalWhiz Hub,” at the 6th floor of the

DLSU Henry Sy, Sr. Hall last March.

MyLegalWhiz is the latest innovation in legal research in the

Philippines. Its focus is on the efficient delivery of legal knowledge

using cloud-computing technology.

Students and legal professionals now can access organized and

updated legal articles, cases and discussions anytime and on

any device.

The hub aims to showcase the latest technological developments

(both in hardware and software) that can make law students,

practitioners and educators in the Philippines efficient in their

research, study, and work.

Legal study and research have traditionally been paper-intensive.

The MyLegalWhiz hub, which will host the latest technology

in legal research and information delivery, aspires to be at the

forefront in changing this status quo by reducing and eventually

eliminating paper dependency and wastage.

This will make the legal profession and practice in the country at

par with developed jurisdictions in the world. Thus, aside from

stimulating this technological awareness in the community, it

also aligns De La Salle University with international environmental

best practices and bolsters its movement for a “greener” and

environmentally friendly campus.

3 Lasallians in Top 10 list of 2014 TOSP-NCR THREE DLSU STUDENTS WERE

INCLUDED in this year’s Ten

Outstanding Students of the Philippines

in the National Capital Region (TOSP-

NCR), which was released last May 5.

Jose Miguel Moreno from the College

of Liberal Arts, Justin Sucgang from the

College of Law, and Ira Gayll Zamudio

from the School of Economics were

cited as exemplary students alongside

seven pupils from universities in the

National Capital Region.

DLSU President and Chancellor

Br. Ricardo Laguda FSC issued a

statement regarding the three Lasallians

who made it to this year’s roster of

TOSP-NCR.

“Being part of the TOSP NCR also

presents a responsibility and a

challenge to engage in the task of

transforming our nation. I am confident

that you will carry the values of Faith,

Service and Communion in performing

your tasks of serving our nation.”

Moreno, Sucgang, and Zamudio will

move on to represent the University in

the TOSP nationals.

THERE IS A NEED TO MANAGE

TRANSITIONS as the University starts the

new academic year, Br. Ricardo Laguda

FSC emphasized in his message to the

Lasallian community at the University

General Assembly (UGA) last May 30 at the

Teresa Yuchengco Auditorium.

Br. Ricky highlighted the importance of

adopting the Lasallian Core Curriculum,

which will serve as the foundation of

student development in the University . He

noted the importance of developing in the

students the Expected Lasallian Graduate

Attributes, otherwise known as ELGAs.

He also stressed the importance of

managing the human resources of the

University, through continuous training and

“re-tooling”, with the aim of becoming more

relevant to student learners.

Underscoring the Lasallian Mission,

Br. Ricky said it should be embedded,

in the formation and development of all

stakeholders.

“Only when we do something

transformational can we truly say we have

returned to our foundational charism,

resulting in a profound renewal of faith and

prayer as Lasallians,” Br. Ricky ended.

After delivering his UGA message in the

morning, Br. Ricky presented in a townhall

meeting the plans on the new academic

calendar in AY 2015-2016, drafted by

a committeee, to generate inputs from

members of the community.

New study measures DLSU research productivity

IN A RECENT STUDY CONDUTED BY DLSU ADMINISTRATORS,

research production of full-time faculty members of the University

was measured in terms of the number of Scopus-indexed research

output between 1982 and 2013, with DLSU as affiliation.

This was compared with individual attributes like gender, age,

faculty rank, having a doctorate degree, age at which doctorate

degree was earned, doctorate degree earned in a foreign university,

service longevity, academic inbreeding, academic mobility.

It was found that among these attributes, only faculty rank,

doctorate, and longevity correlate significantly at 0.01 level

with Scopus output, with Pearson-r of .418, .214, and .155,

respectively, for a population size of 425.

Metrics for gender, age, service longevity, doctorate, doctorate age,

foreign doctorate, faculty rank, academic inbreeding, academic

mobility, academic diversity, age spread, doctorate age spread, and

faculty inflow were built from individual faculty attributes, and also

compared with Scopus output. It is found that only the faculty rank,

and faculty inflow indices correlate significantly, both at 0.01 level,

with departmental Scopus output, with Pearson-r of .713 and .444,

respectively, for a population of 36.

About 75% of the University’s Scopus output are co-authored.

Using the tools and concepts of Social Network Analysis,

co-authorship network maps showed graphs that tend to become

more elaborate as departments go up the ranks in terms of Scopus

output, indicating a correlation between collaborative research

activities and research production.

Statistical analysis showed that the number of co-authorships

correlates significantly with research production at 0.01 level, with

Pearson-r of .867 at the departmental level. On the individual level,

degree centrality correlates significantly at 0.01 level with Scopus

output among the “outlier” population, a Pearson-r of .723. The

stronger correlation between network metrics and Scopus output

compared to those of attribute metrics shows that working with

others, more than the status of individuals, is a more effective driver

of research productivity.

The study was headed by Dr. Robert Roleda, Dr. Lydia Roleda,

Dr. Dominador Bombongan, Jr., Dr. Raymond Tan, and Dr. Alvin

Culaba.
