Dear Friends,
You may have read about recent developments at Garth’s in the August issue of Maine Antique Digest. If you missed it, MAD reported on the proposed rezoning (by a developer and thelandowner) of part of the Garth’s property to accommodate a gasstation at the corner of Stratford Road and US 23 - currently the portion of the land utilized for Eclectic Auctions. While a hot-button issue in our local area, a response by the Garth’s community would likely have more to do with the environmentalimpact of fuel storage tanks than the demolition of a metal polebuilding; understandably so. Unfortunately, the rezoning and development of that small parcel impacts the use of the Federalhome and historic bank barn just to the north – the buildings that, together, have created the quintessential auction experience atGarth’s.
So, it is with both disappointment, and yet simultaneously somevery real excitement, that we share with you our plan to relocatethe company in 2010 at the end of our lease. Although it is a bittoo soon to release the new address, as we plan our next facilityyou should know that we pledge to:
1. maintain a Delaware, Ohio address (not as important when youare bidding by phone, via the internet, or perhaps driving to town for an auction, but you can bet that a dozen or so folks who drive here to work everyday appreciate the commitment toour zip code).
2. remain true to the philosophies regarding historic preservationthat most, if not all, of you share.
3. continue to “walk-the-talk” as we “speak” to both a new and oldaudience about the benefits of studying, collecting and decoratingwith antiques to a green lifestyle.
It feels a bit ironic to utilize an Eclectic flyer to talk about a location change for the Garth’s family. After all, “the gallery” is ,from a historical perspective, clearly the least significant structurehere. But for you, and for us, the Garth’s property has been notonly a landmark along a busy highway, but also a scenic backdropwhere friendships were formed and memories made. We welcome your recollections about the Garth’s property – by phone, email, snail-mail or in person. On the solid foundation of our traditions and collective history, we look forward to building newmemories in a new, yet historic, facility. Stay tuned as we releasemore information about this exciting, dynamic time at Garth’s!
Warm regards, Jeff & Amelia Jeffers

Not many people can declare they held a job for nearly five decades, but the family ofrenowned Kennedy photographer, the late Robert Davidoff, can say with pride that Davidoffwas the photographer “in residence” for the Kennedy family in Palm Beach for almost 50years. Davidoff’s family waited until four years after his death to release a book, The KennedyFamily Album, in September 2008. Now, Babe Davidoff, widow of the photographer, haschosen, for the sale of the original photography used to create the book plus additional images not included in the publication and heretofore unseen by the general public, an auction house similarly dedicated to its own customers for over five decades. Garth’s Auctions is proud to announce that in the fall of 2009, it will present over 200 photographswhich captured three generations of the Kennedy family while at the “Winter White House”during President John F. Kennedy’s administration through the eventual sale of the Palm Beachhome.
A freelance photographer, Davidoff first photographed then President-elect John F. Kennedyalong side President Herbert Hoover and Ambassador Joseph Kennedy during a party forHoover in Palm Beach. However, it wasn’t until Davidoff later met Rose Kennedy that hewas invited by the matriarch to become a true family intimate capturing photos destined tobe part of the families’ personal archives.
Garth’s will also feature other presidential material of note in this landmark sale with moreinformation to follow in the coming months. For information on consigning your piece ofhistoric presidential memorabilia, contact Jeff Jeffers or Andrew Richmond at 740.362.4771or via email at [email protected].
