Cheltenham Youth For

*Matthew’s story
When we first met Matthew he was chasing down a
classmate, followed by a number of onlookers that wanted
to see him fight the other young person. You can imagine
the scene of a furious year 7 boy focused on righting this
apparent wrong and in his eyes restoring his families’
reputation. We intervened before it all got out of hand and
were met by verbal abuse from Matthew about how we
weren’t teachers and could not do anything.
A few weeks later we asked by the school to run a course
for year 7 boys with significant behaviour issues. The group
was exploring character and anger issues and Matthew was
one of the boys in the group.
During those sessions Matthew made lots of progress and when we see him
in the hallway at lunch times he stops and we have a grown up, responsible
conversation. He still has a lot of progress to make, but he is moving towards
entering the adult world with the skills he needs to fulfill his potential.
Welcome to this years auction…
Welcome to our fourth annual auction. Thank you for taking the
time to come tonight and support our ongoing work with young
people in Cheltenham. We would also like to thank Christian City
Church who have donated this lovely venue for this year’s auction.
We have had another year where we have been blown away with
the support from local businesses that have generously donated a
wide range of quality items. We cannot thank these local
businesses enough as without their generosity we would not be
having this event. It really does encourage us that so many
businesses can see our vision for our work and understand its
value to local young people.

The issues they face…
Cheltenham Youth For
Christ Who we are and what we do…
Cheltenham Youth For Christ is a local charity
that aims to bring the good news relevantly to
every young person in Gloucestershire.
Last year we worked with approximately 1750
young people between the ages of 7 and 18 in
the Cheltenham area. During the year we
provided one to one mentoring, group work,
detached work, ran a variety of clubs for young
people and continued our prayer evangelism
network.
The team has expanded considerably over the
last twelve months and this is allowing us to
extend our work beyond Cheltenham.
Following the closure of Gloucester YFC we are
taking on work in Tewkesbury and Gloucester.
All of our work is funded by voluntary donations
from individuals, churches and a small amount
from trusts. This allows us to be flexible in our
approach and respond to young people’s
needs.
We work with a cross section of young people,
many of whom face issues of self-esteem,
family problems, social issues, or struggle with
various aspects of school. In our work we seek
to help young people gain a positive view of
themselves and to attain their full potential. We
believe the best way of achieving this potential
and living life to the full is giving young people a
chance to find out about Jesus.

The Team
Paul has been Director of Cheltenham YFC for eleven years. Prior to this, he was a church
based youth worker in London and has previously been involved in management of residential
housing for people with learning difficulties. Paul is also a member of the British Youth for
Christ Coaching Team.
Jon’s history is in outdoor education, working in both Christian and non-Christian centres. He
worked in the automotive industry for six years and has travelled extensively. Before coming
to work for YFC, Jon spent two years volunteering at his local church during which time he felt
called to work with young people. Jon has just completed a JNC/Degree in Youth Work.
Flik, having done a gap year with us, is in the second year of a youth work degree at the
University of Gloucestershire. Flik loves relational work with young people and seeing them
grow into the people God wants them to be.
Joe is a third year university student, studying Youth Work and is on placement with us
until the end of the school year. He has a passion for music and is in involved in leading
worship in his local church, the University CU and churches in London
Megan is from Denver, Colorado taking her second gap year with YFC, the previous year she
spent with YWAM based in Crawley. She has always had a passion to be in the UK and also
for working with young people while sharing the gospel in relevant ways.
Francis is a theology student on placement with us for the year he is really looking forward to
going into schools. Previously he has worked in church and secular youth groups. He is also
the Evangelism-Coordinator for the Church of England Youth Council.
Rukaya is from Ammanford, South Wales and is currently doing a gap year at YFC
Cheltenham. She is really looking forward to building relationships with young people. At her
home Church, she worked alongside the youth leader and often led the youth group.
James is currently on his second gap year with YFC, having spent a year with Nomad
touring the country with the football cage. He is originally from Nottingham and is looking
forward to getting involved in schools work and getting stuck in to a local church.

Pray for us…
We would like prayer for:
The young people we work with,
that they will be able to
overcome the challenges they
face.
Young people to be open to the
Gospel message.
Wisdom as we move the work
beyond Cheltenham into
Gloucester, Tewkesbury and
beyond.
Pray that as our work and team
expand we will have the
resources to meet the
opportunities we have.
If you’re interested in praying for us
as a team please feel free to join us
each Thursday morning at 9am in
our office.

Volunteer More than youth work
There are many ways in which you can help us.
We need volunteers to help with our youth work,
but we also need people to support our work in
other ways. This would enable us to spend more
time working face to face with young people.
+
+
We need volunteers in the following
areas:
Administrative support
Youth work & sports work
Website management
Publicity & fundraising
IT support
The value of your donation…
£5 a month will allow us to run a
tutor time in a school each month.
£10 a month allows us to run an
after school club for a term.
£20 a month enables us to mentor a
young person through a crisis or
problem they are encountering.
£30 a month pays for a Christian
Union for a year.
Without financial support, our work cannot
take place. Our income comes primarily from
individual and church support. We receive
limited grant and trust income. In order for us
to continue our growing work, we need to
raise our income to a greater level.
Regular monthly support is most effective in
helping us plan and fund our work, but one
off donations make a significant impact. No
gift is too small or great, as everyone’s
donation together allows us to change young
people’s lives.

Give… There are various ways in which to give.
Here’s how you’ve helped… Ola’s story
I have been attending Rock Solid at Pittville
School for a couple of years. Each week
CYFC come in to school and teach us
about Christianity in fun and interesting
ways The talks also help us reflect on how
we see ourselves or how others see us.
This helps us to change and become better
people. The talks also show us where we
are doing things well and how to keep it up.
The club is great because everybody can
be themselves and fit in, there is a variety
of different personalities and for that one
hour everybody is working together as a
team not caring about the differences but
focusing on the similarities.
Throughout the time I have known the
CYFC team, I have learnt a lot about other

+
people and about myself. It has
changed the way in which I behave
towards others and I have learnt that
by being patient and determined I can
so much more. When I grow up I
would like to do some youth work as
well and help young people just like
the CYFC team do because it really
makes a difference to their lives and
it’s a valuable difference which the
kids need. It has been a pleasure to
know the team. They have taught me
a lot about life and valuable
information which I hope I can use
later on in life and pass on to others to
help them just like CYFC has helped
me.
