Clarin Lewis (President Elect), Mike Kwiatkowski (Secretary

Elect) and Dorlon Himber, (Member at Large Elect) were elected by Acclimation at the

November meeting. As the December meeting was can-

celed due to weather and road conditions, they will be sworn in at the January 11, 2017 meet-

ing.

Finally, a smaller redrawn 2p was issued in 1950. A booklet version (SG134a) of six stamps with the margin at right was issued in 1951. There were four printings up to 1952. They can only be identified by marginal control and arrow blocks.

The 1927 engraved 3p has a pic-torial vignette of Cecil Rhodes’s residence. Both the engraved 1927 issue and the 1931 photo-gravure issue have no hyphen for the “SUIDAFRIKA” script. The December meeting had to be canceled due to weather and road conditions. The new officers will be sworn in at the January 11th meeting. Membership cards for those who have already paid dues will be late as the incoming officers have to sign them. The back of the membership cards now list meeting dates, show dates, Buy,

Sell, Trade (BST) meetings, and Auction (AUCT) meetings. The Excursion into the 1926-54 South African Series continues with this issue and into the next year.

The ECHOES is published six times a year in January, March, May, July, Sep-tember, and November. If you do NOT get your ECHOES the first week of the issue month, let me know! I will get another mailed out to you! Remember, email delivery = COLOR!!

A Survey of the 1926-1954 English-Afrikaans …… (continued from page 1)

One should be able to distinguish the engraved and photogravure version on appearance alone.

Here is the 1931 photogravure issue. Is there any way, besides general ap-pearance, to determine between the 1927 engraved and 1931 photogra-vure 3p red & black?

Examine carefully the upper border of the 1927 engraved issue. One should find five horizontal lines. From top to bottom, they are: thick, thin, thin, thick and thick. In con-trast, the 1931 photogravure issue only has three thick lines. (Another difference is there are two horizontal lines under “postage” or “possell” in the engraved stamp, while the photogravure stamp only has one horizontal line. (Enlarge the images, and verify!)

In 1933, after only two years, the color of the 3p was changed from red & black to ultramarine and blue. “SUIDAFRIKA” remains without hyphen. There should be little identification confusion with this issue.

The last photogravure 3p in the Scott catalogue, using a similar design but redrawn with trees taller and touching the frame, and the sky without lines, and in an ultramarine color only, was Scott 57 issued in 1940. I don’t think Scott catalogue users should have trouble with this issue.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR NEW EXHIBITORS !

The Northwest Federation of Stamp Clubs has an-nounced a new initiative: any new exhibitor at PIPEX in May — or SEAPEX in September can receive a rebate of $20.00 of their exhibit entrée fees. A new exhibitor who has not entered an ex-hibit in any WSP show is eligible for this rebate if an adult member of any of the clubs that belong to the Northwest Federation. Of course, GESS is a member. As many as ten such rebates are available in 2017; normally a stamp show receives one or two entries from new exhibitors. The exhibits prospectus and entry forms can be downloaded from www.PIPEXstampshow.org. The deadline for entries is April 1. It can take sev-eral months to work up an exhibit. Among the reasons to exhibit at a stamp show:

to show your friends what you can do

to educate the public about your specialty

to add focus to your collection

to deepen your philatelic knowledge

To win fame and glory (I’m kidding but the awards can be cool!) (continued to page 4)

But, as found with the 2p, Stanley Gibbons parses this design.

1940 SG59 3d ultramarine, center diagonally screened, frame unscreened.

1949 SG117 3d dull blue, whole stamp screened with irregular grain, two cylinder printing.

1951 SG117a blue, whole stamp diagonally screened, one cylinder printing.

In addition, there are differences in the appearance of the scrolls above “3d”.

I am not going to get into the particulars—suffice it to say this stamp issue is quite complicated. If the reader is interested consult the reference links from the Part I post.

4p Denomination

The 4p “Native Kraal” design is interesting as there were four major issues between 1928 - 1952, and each one shows unique changes in the design drawing.

The 1928 issue, with “SUIDAFRIKA” unhyphenated, is the only engraved version.

Let’s compare the central pictorial vignette for all four issues, as they have some design differences.

Continued to next issue…….
