November 11 “THAT USED TO BE US”Throughout th is church year, we are marking a number of “Festival Sundays” to he lp enhance the strength of our worship serv ices and to celebrate our

liturgical life together as a congregation. So far we have observed Reformation Sunday on October 28, and on November 11 we will observe “All Saints Sunday”, that day set aside in the worship calendar to remember the saints and loved ones who have gone before us in our journey of faith. The sermon will be entitled “That Used To Be Us”, the texts are taken from Deuteronomy 6 and Hebrews 12, and we will be lifting up all the names of those persons from our church family who have died and joined the church triumphant during the past year (since November 2011).Our choir will also sing a special anthem “in memorium” at the conclusion of the worship service. As we thank the Lord for each and every one of those “saints” who have gone on before us into eternal life with the Lord, I hope you will join us for this Festival Sunday. And please, invite a friend or family member to come on along as well. “O blest communion, fellowship divine, We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; Yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine; Alleluia! Alleluia!”

I hope you will be inspired to embrace what First church offers to our members in 2013. There is no doubt that we are able to partner with churches in Brazil, Haiti, Jamaica, Kenya, Honduras and New Orleans and, hopefully, soon with cuba, because of the incredible commitment this church has for mission and the generosity of our members.Our schedule for Mission Sunday calls for Worship Services at 9:00 and 11:15 am10:15 am Adult Sunday School classes in Fifield Hall and 10:15 am Elementary Sunday School classes. ALL SAINTS’ SUNDAY November 11th is a Festival Sunday in the life of our church. It iscalled All Saints’ Day. Festival Sun-days are days on the church calendar to which we pay special attention - such as Epiphany Sunday,Reformation Sunday, and Pentecost. We will celebrate All Saints’ Day within our 9 and 11:15 AM worship services by commemorating the lives of those who have died in the last year. We will name the names of church members who have passed on, as well as recognizing other deaths that have touched our lives in this com-munity of faith. Candles will be lit in honor of these saints. There will be a special anthem entitled ‘The Souls of the Righteous.’

WHAT IS ALL SAINTS’ DAY? The Christian church in the first cen-

turies AD honored the lives of those who were martyred, killed, because of their faith. These martyr days became so abundant that they were merged into a day in November in which all of the dead, called saints, were honored and remembered. In a side note, Halloween was called All Hallow’s Eve in the churchtradition, and was a way for Chris-tians to mock the power of evil inpreparation for All Saints’ Day. In our Presbyterian and reformed tradition, we consider all of God’s children to be the saints. Thus, we celebrate the lives of all of who have died. We also celebrate the unity that we as today’s Christians share with those who have gone on before us. We are one - the communion of saints - in all times and places. Join us in remembrance and commemoration on November 11th.
