What is the ECDL?

The European Computer Driving Licence is designed to assess key IT skills leading to an internationally recognised qualification.

There are seven modules and you must pass tests in all seven to gain an ECDL.

• Each module covers a different area of IT skills and knowledge.

• Module 1 is knowledge-based involving answering a series of questions.

• Modules 2 - 7 involve completing practical tasks using a simulated version of the relevant software application.

Introduction

• You are responsible for ensuring you are ready for a test before sitting it

• Check the syllabus (in your orientation pack) carefully to ensure you have all the skills necessary to pass each module

• Use the online learning materials and/or the ECDL coursebook to study on your own.

• Get additional help at the Open Learning Centre or attend Training courses if you wish.

Electric Paper

• EP is an online learning package specifically designed for the ECDL.

• For details and to register:– visit www.ucl.ac.uk/elearning – follow the link to Electric Paper

and then read the What you need section

• You will need a UCL UserID to register.• EP learning materials teach you how to use Outlook

Express rather than Outlook for emails so you are recommended to use the coursebook to study for this part of Module 7

ECDL Coursebook

• As well as access to Electric Paper learning materials, you will also be issued with an ECDL coursebook.

• This is available in a version for Office XP or Office 2000.

• It is recommended that you take the coursebook for the version of Office you have on the computer you will be using to study.

Open Learning Centre

• Drop in to the OLC at any time for help with with specific IT questions or areas you are unsure about.

• Location and opening times are at www.ucl.ac.uk/is/olc

• You can also use the centre as a quiet place for study – just drop in!

• Note: if you have specific questions about ECDL procedure, email [email protected] rather than visiting the centre.

Registration

• The first time you sit a test or mock test you will be officially registered with the British Computer Society and given a BCS Number.

• If you have not already paid you must do so before sitting any tests.

• You will need a UCL UserID to be registered.

Booking tests

• Test sessions are usually on Thursday or Friday morning. Visit: www.ucl.ac.uk/is/training/ecdl/info.htm for a full list of available dates.

• You can sit between 1 and 3 tests at a single session depending on availability.

• Tests can be done ‘back-to-back’(i.e. as soon as you have finished one test you can do the next).

• To book email [email protected] following the instructions on the web page (see above).

Automated testing

• Testing is done using ‘automated testing’ which simulates the software application you are being tested in.

• You will be given a demonstration of this software at your orientation.

• At the end of the test, you will immediately receive your result on the screen.

Mock tests

• A mock test is available for each module.• Mock tests are an opportunity to experience

automated testing and test your skills.• It is strongly recommended that you sit a mock test 1

to 2 weeks prior to your actual test.• Mock tests can be taken in the OLC by appointment

during normal opening hours.

Re-sits

• More than 90% of tests are passed first time but…

• If you fail a module test you can re-sit it on a different day.

• There is a charge of £10 for re-sits.• There are several versions of each module

test available for re-sits. • There is a formal Appeals procedure which

you can go through if you fail all available tests. Please ask for more details.

Certification

• When you have passed all 7 module tests, your certificate will be issued by the British Computer Society.

• We will contact you when we receive your certificate so that you can come and collect it.

• This takes up to 8 weeks and you should contact [email protected] if you have not received your certificate after 2 months.
