The exploits of Commander Of Fleet and many others last season meant that the Peter Nolan Bloodstock-consigned yearling was going to be in some demand and Johnny Collins had to dig deep to see off various challengers for this grandson of Montjeu. Lot 152 also boasted quite an impressive pedigree, as he is the second produce of a winning half-sister to the Galway Plate heroine Blazing Tempo (Accordion). This is also the family of one of the greats of Irish National Hunt racing in the 1990s in the 1994 Gr.1 Sun Alliance Novices Hurdle victor Danoli (The Parson).

“He’s a nice horse and the sire couldn’t have done any more last

season with his four-year-olds. Montjeu’s sons are starting to make an impact at stud and I also like the fact that this horse is out of an Oscar mare. I have a couple of yearlings at home by the sire and they are not making them anymore, so I was delighted to get this fellow as well. The plan will be for him to come back as a three-year-old,” commented Collins.

At the outset of what is likely to be a busy few days for Dick Frisby, the Glenwood Stud man struck for one of the best yearlings on offer when he forked out €37,000 for a son of the elite sire Kayf Tara. Lot 123 was consigned by Bluegate Stud on behalf of William Tilley and he is a half-brother to a winner by Nomadic

enjoyed a helpful recent update when his half-brother, The Last Marju (Marju), was placed at Gr.3 level over fences at Tipperary last month. Their grandam is the Gr.1 Nunthorpe Stakes winner Lochangel (Night Shift).

Penelope Lindsay-Fynn signed for a fine son of Black Sam Bellamy who fetched €32,000. This March-born gelding (Lot 132) was another member of the Peel Hall Stables draft and he is out of a winning Lomitas mare whose dam is the Gr.2 River Don Novices Hurdle heroine Diamant Noir (Sir Harry Lewis).

The start of the busiest period of the day began with the arrival into the ring of a son of the promising young sire and Robin Des Champs horse Cokoriko, Lot 121. The attractive Hadeux Cmieux was sold by Tildarg Stables and he is the fourth produce of the winning Jeune Homme mare Queen du Vallon. At €35,000 Ryan Mahon struck the successful bid for this popular French-bred gelding.

Just a couple of minutes before his half-brother Ballyoisin (Presenting) produced yet another pillar-to-post tour de force, a Milan gelding from Rathbarry Stud was snapped up by agent Kevin Ross for €30,000. A Gr.2 winner over hurdles, Ballyoisin made it three Gr.2 victories over fences with a typically bold display in the Gr.2 Fortria Chase at Navan. They are out of the placed Regal Force (King’s Ride). whose dam is the multiple Listed scorer Force Seven (Strong Gale).

The first notable transaction of the day came when Timmy O’Byrne signed for a good looking son of Milan from Woodhouse Stud who fetched €25,000. Lot 97, who shares his sire with a host of National Hunt luminaries, is the third produce of the dual

Way out of a placed daughter of Presenting. “He’s going to be coming back for sale as a three-year-old and I

was pleased to get him. He’s a good-looking, good walking sort and he’s by a top sire. We’ve had plenty by the sire through our hands and he’s been lucky for us,” reflected Frisby.

This price was closely matched by James Mernagh when he spent €35,000 on a son of the veteran sire Turgeon from Ballyreddin Stud. Already named Meditur, Lot 136 is the first produce of a Sagamix half-sister to the high-class Medermit (Malinas), whose career took in victories in the Gr.2 Long Distance Hurdle and the Gr.3 Coral Cup at the Cheltenham Festival.

“He’s been bought to come back for a resale as a three-year-old and we’re delighted to get him, we felt he was the nicest yearling here today,” commented Mernagh, whose former graduates include Willie Mullins’s Irish Cesarewitch winner Digeanta.

Also looking forward to the store sales of 2019 is Timmy Hillman who went to €30,000 to secure a smart son of Great Pretender, consigned by Peel Hall Stables. This half-brother to two winners comes from a family that traces back to one of the greats of American racing in Zenyatta (Street Cry).

“The sire has produced very good horses over the last few seasons, including the likes of Great Field, and it’s a family I know, as John Dwan had his Martaline half-brother at the Derby Sale this year and sold him for €85,000. He’s a good looking horse and he will hopefully be back for the Derby Sale as a three-year-old,” commented Hillman.

A €27,000 gelding from the first crop of the Gr.1 St Leger winner Kingston Hill also came the way of Timmy Hillman. This Miltown Park Stud offering numbers five winners amongst his siblings and

J’Y Vole, while also under the second dam My Sister Sarah has won both her starts for Willie Mullins and looks promising,” reported Knight.

Understandably there will be great interest all week in the progeny of the late Presenting, who made such an impact as a National Hunt sire over the last 15 years, and the second yearling by the sire to pass under the hammer yesterday was a taking gelding who fetched €23,000. The Glen Stables offering cost the TC Partnership €22,000 and he is the third produce of a King’s Theatre own-sister to the Gr.2-winning Carrigmartin and the Gr.2-placed City Slicker.

Leading agent Aiden Murphy made his presence felt when going to €27,000 for a son of Montmartre from Ballinaroone Stud. The grey (Lot 131) is a half-brother to two winners from the family of the brilliant Apple’s Jade, who added further lustre to the pedigree with a dominant comeback success in the Gr.2 Lismullen Hurdle at Navan yesterday.

The €27,000 mark was also reached by trainer Ian Ferguson when he gave €27,000 for a son of Soldier Of Fortune from Jim Mernagh’s Coolamurry Stud. The grandson of Galileo (Lot 139) is out of a winning half-sister to the Gr.3 Midlands Grand National victor Seven Towers (Roselier).

Elsewhere, More More Stables was the purchaser of a €28,000 son of Buck’s Boum offered by Railstown Stud. Happy Victory, as Lot 144 is named, is a half-brother to three winners and comes from a family that has produced the multiple Gr.1 scorer and dual Cheltenham Festival winner Douvan (Walk In The Park).

winner Tarantella Lady (Noverre) and her winning siblings include Martin Pipe’s Gr.1 Arkle Chase hero Contraband (Red Ransom).

The next lot into the ring was a very taking daughter of the elite sire Flemensfirth and she was snapped up by Best Mate’s trainer Henrietta Knight for €20,000, making her the day’s top-priced filly. The May-born filly (Lot 98) is out of a half-sister to Willie Mullins’ top-class mare and Gr.1-winning chaser J’y Vole (Mansonnien), who also notched up several victories at Gr.2 level.

“She is a lovely quality filly and has been bought to go into training further down the line. She has a pedigree being out of half-sister to

was steady and there was little change in the order until Pappalino was pulled out in the straight and trucked through the soft conditions to score by five lengths from Capitole, with Talk Or Listen (Alhebayeb) running on to get third, a further length away.

Bred by Stud RDI, Pappalino was bought by PB Bloodstock Services from the Arqana October Yearling Sale, and he was second first time out over 1500m at Marseille Pont de Vivaux. He won next time out and was third in the 1600m Listed Prix Francois Boutin before coming fifth in the Gr.3 Prix des Chenes. He ran disappointingly in Longchamp before stepping up to 2000m for the first time yesterday.

He is the first foal out of the winner Bartira (Cape Cross), who is a half-sister to the Gr.3 Preis des Winterfavouriten winner Brisanto (Dansili). The second dam, the Gr.2 German 1,000 Guineas winner Briseida (Pivotal), is a half-sister to the dual Gr.2 winner, Gr.1-placed and sire Titus Livius.

BACK TO BACK LISTED VICTORIES FOR STARThe Listed Grand Prix de Marseille, the second Stakes race at Marseille Borely yesterday, was won by the Jean-Laurent Dubord-trained Star Victory.

The seven-year-old son of Tot Ou Tard tracked Soleil D’Octobre (Great Journey) and Nice To See You (Syouni) before being ridden to lead in the straight and staying on well to score by a length from Soleil D’Octobre, with Nice To See You a further length away in third.

Scuderia Chimax, which is involved in the ownership, paid €5,500 for him at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale. He is the second winner from four foals out of the unraced Labba (Tiger Hill), a half-sister to the stakes placed Liwa Palace (Oasis Dream) and Atlantis Star (Cape Cross).

Labba has a yearling filly by Cappella Sansevero, purchased for €2,000 by Mark Fagan at the Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale.

The Listed Criterium Femminile, for juvenile fillies over the same trip, returned a strongly-fancied winner in Birthday Party (Rock Of Gibraltar), who stayed on strongly to collect her second Stakes win following her success in the Listed Premio Mantovani in July. She scored by two and a half length from Lampoflex (Intikhab), who made a good move on the inside, and the other previous Stakes winner in the field, Crisaff’s Queen (Zoffany).

Birthday Party is a half-sister to Flower Party (Duke Of Marmalade), who ran second in the Gr.2 Oaks d’Italia, third in the Gr.3 Derby Italiano and won the Gr.3 Premio Verziere. Birthday Party and her elder sister both cost €12,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale and Alduino Botti also bought their half-brother, a colt by Born To Sea, for €22,000 this year at the same venue. Their dam, Jubilant Lady (Aptitude), has a filly foal by Fast Company.

The three-year-old filly Isole Canarie (Rip Van Winkle), a Stakes winner at two, missed the first half of the season but came back to her best to score in the Listed Premio Buontalenta over 1600m. She out-battled Party Goer (Intense Focus), while the British raider Harmonica (Pivotal) clinched third place, four lengths behind.

It was a third career Stakes victory for Star Victory, having won the Listed Grand Prix de Compiegne in 2016 and the Listed Grand Prix des Provinces-Prix Andre Baboin last month. He has also been placed at Gr.2 and Gr.3 level, including in this year’s Gr.2 Prix d’Harcourt.

Bred by Jean-Louis Lucas, Star Victory is a full-brother to the dual Listed-placed Tardou, and they are out of the winning Kadrou mare Tadrou.

ITALY

DESERVED STAKES VICTORY FOR FROZEN JUKETwo-year-old Frozen Juke (Frozen Power), who ran a very good race to be fifth when beaten by one and half length behind Mission Boy (Paco Boy) in the Gr.2 Gran Criterium, landed a well-deserved stakes win in the Listed Premio Rumon yesterday at Capannelle.

The colt, owned by Scuderia SSIM, settled well off the torrid pace set by Foot Of King (Footstepsinthesand), who got tired entering the last 400m, and ran on strongly to score by two lengths from Pensiero D’Amore (Zoffany), who collected another second place.

Frozen Juke scored his fifth win in six starts and looks like one of the best juveniles in Italy. He clocked a time of 1:37.4, one and half seconds faster than the fillies in the Listed Criterium Femminile.

Decidee Allen and the pace lifted. Decidee Allen soon began to weaken and Ecbatane took the race by the scruff of the neck. She held a five-length advantage turning for home and was pushed out after the last to score by five lengths from D’Entree De Jeu (Network), with Emeraude De Kerza three quarters of a length back in third.

A winner on the Flat last year, Ecbatane won her hurdle debut, but quickly progressed to chasing, coming second on her debut and winning next time out. This was her third Rules victory and first at Stakes level.

Bred by Ecurie Maulepaire, she is a half-sister to three winners out of the placed Djurjura (Akarad), whose own dam is a half-sister to the dam of the Gr.1 Arkle and Gr.1 Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Azertyuiop (Baby Turk).

STORM OF SAINTLY BACK TO WINNING WAYS IN PRIX GENERAL DONNIOThe 4400m Listed Prix General Donnio was won by the Guillaume Macaire-trained Storm Of Saintly. It had been over two years since his last victory.

The nine-year-old son of Saint Des Saints raced at the rear of the six-runner field as Shakapon (Deportivo) led the way in heavy conditions. Storm Of Saintly’s jumping put him in contention with four flights left to take and, as they turned for home, he took on the tiring Shakapon, as did Politikar (Poliglote). That pair jumped the last together, but Storm Of Saintly stayed on better and scored by eight lengths. Shakapon was 15 lengths adrift in third.

A top-class chaser in his day, he won the winner of the Gr.1 Prix Ferdinand Dufaure in 2013 and the Gr.1 Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris in 2014, after which he was off the track for two years. He came back to come second in the Gr.1 Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris the Gr.2 Prix des Drags and win the Gr.2 Prix des Drags in May and June 2016. That was to be his last win until yesterday, although he was placed in the Gr.1 Prix la Haye Jousselin and at Gr.2 and Gr.3 level.

Homebred by Jeannot Andt, he is the best of five winners and six foals out of the Garde Royale mare The Storm, who won nine times and was placed a further 20 times from two to seven.

SECOND LISMULLEN HURDLE FOR APPLE’S JADEStar mare Apple’s Jade looked back to close to her best when winning the Gr.2 Lismullen Hurdle, the feature race at Navan yesterday, for the second time.

The six-year-old daughter of Saddler Maker made all the running and, jumping right at times, was well in command at the second last. She took it and the last well and went on to score by 11 lengths from Jezki (Milan), with Coney Island (Flemensfirth) a further three and a quarter lengths back in third.

Apple’s Jade took this race at the start of last season and went on to claim the Gr.1 Hatton’s Grace Hurdle and the Gr.1 Christmas Hurdle before coming third to Benie Des Dieux at the Cheltenham Festival in the Gr.1 Champion Hurdle, after which she was said to be in season. She was third to the same rival in the Gr.1 Mares Champion Hurdle at Punchestown a month later.

Bred by Ronny Coveliers, she is a full-sister to the Gr.2 Finesse

Isole Canarie has a similar story to Birthday Party. The owner Sebastiano Guerrieri bought two others half-sisters. The elder, the four-year-old Isole Eolie (Intense Focus) has won five races, while the younger, the two-year-old Isole Maldive (War Command), landed two races and has already contested a couple of Listed events. Their dam, Hairicin (Hurricane Run), has a yearling colt by Gutaifan, purchased for €40,000 by Jamie Osborne at the Goffs Orby Sale, and her foal, a filly by Adaay, is to be offered as Lot 464 at the Goffs November Foal Sale.

The fourth Stakes race on the card, the Listed Premio Roma Vecchia, returned a very disappointing result for the Italians. The German-bred and Czech-trained Indian Eagle (Adlerflug) cruised home two lengths clear from the previous Gr.3-placed Menuhin (Mujahid), while the British mare St Mary’s (Siyouni) pinched her black type in third. Indian Eagle had been claimed by owner DAR for €16,322 after he won a low-level claimer three weeks before at Le Croise-Laroche in France. Franco Raimondi

NATIONAL HUNT RACING REVIEWFRANCE

MASTER DINO DOMINANT IN PRIX RENAUD DU VIVIERThe Guillaume Macaire-trained Master Dino cemented his position as France’s leading four-year-old hurdler with a commanding victory in the Gr.1 Prix Renaud du Vivier (Grande Course de Haies des 4 Ans), the feature race on a card with four Stakes races in heavy conditions at Auteuil yesterday.

The son of Doctor Dino raced off the pace for much of the 1900m contest and travelled to the front with two flights left to take. He was followed through by his old rival and stablemate Tunis (Estejo) and, having jumped the last two flights, ran on to score by eight lengths, while Raffles Sun (Poliglote) was a further six lengths back in third.

The winner of the Gr.1 Grande Course de Haies des 3 Ans here last year, he was placed in his first four starts this term, including in the Gr.1 Prix Alain du Breil, but has not won his last four, including the Gr.3 Prix Questarabad, the Gr.3 Prix de Maisons-laffitte and the Gr.3 Prix Pierre de Lassus.

Bred by Gaec de la Seguegne and Jean-Michel Campos and an €11,000 graduate of the Osarus September Yearling Sale, he is the best of the three winners and first four foals out of Mind Master (Mizzen Mast), whose dam is the five-time Gr.3-placed Nimble Mind (Lyphard). The latter is also the second dam of the dual US Gr.1 victrix Marketing Mix (Medaglia D’Oro) and is a half-sister to Gr.1 winner Contredance (Danzig), Gr.2 winner Skimble (Lyphard; dam of dual Gr.1 winner and sire Skimming) and Gr.3 winner Shotiche (Northern Dancer), as well as to the dam of the Gr.1 1,000 Guineas winner Wince (Selkirk; dam of Gr.1 Yorkshire Oaks winner Quiff).

FIRST STAKES SUCCESS FOR ECBATANE IN PRIX SYTAJThe 4300m Gr.3 Prix Sytaj was the feature race for fillies and mares and it was won by the H Lageneste-trained Ecbatane.

The four-year-old daughter of Balko raced off the pace, which was set by Decidee Allen (Kapgarde), but took closer order at about half way when Emeraude De Kerza (Honolulu) joined

Hurdle winner and Gr.1 Doom Bar Anniversary Hurdle-placed Apple’s Shakira. They are among the first seven foals produced

by Apple’s For Ever (Nikos), a winner over hurdles and fences.

EASY FORTRIA CHASE WIN FOR BALLYOISINJust four lined up for the 2m Gr.2 Fortria Chase and the odds-on favourite Ballyoisin scored a facile victory.

The Enda Bolger-trained seven-year-old son of Presenting jumped out in front and soon opened up a huge lead. The others could not live with the pace and, having jumped well throughout, he strolled home 23 lengths clear of Ordinary World (Milan), with Listen Dear (Robin Des Champs) a further six lengths back in third.

A winner of hurdles and fences, Ballyoisin scored his first Stakes success in the Gr.3 An Riocht Chase at Killarney in May and, with a couple more wins, including a Grade B handicap hurdle, he has now brought up four in a row.

The gelding was bred by Mrs C A Moore and cost €55,000 as a foal at the Tattersalls Ireland November National Hunt Sale. His dam Regal Force (King’s Ride) was fourth at best from 13 starts under Rules and is a half-sister to three winners. The grandam Force Seven (Strong Gale) won ten races, including at Stakes level over both hurdles and fences, and is a half-sister to the Stakes-winning hurdler Notcomplainingbut (Supreme Leader).

MAIDEN STAKES WIN FOR ARAMONThe 2m Gr.3 For Auction Novice Hurdle got the Graded action underway and it was won by the Willie Mullins-trained Aramon, who recorded his second win from three starts over hurdles.

The five-year-old son of Monsun raced in mid-division as the keen-going Magnium (Westerner) jumped out in front. The pace lifted three flights out and Choungaya (Walk In The Park) came through to join the leader, but Aramon was still travelling well in behind. He hit the front at the last and, after a swift leap, ran on well to score by three lengths from Magnium, with Choungaya a further length back in third.

Bred by Gestut Rottgen, Aramon won on the Flat in Germany

for Markus Klug before being bought at the BBAG October Mixed Sale and joining Mullins.

He is out of the Listed-placed Aramina (In The Wings), a half-sister to the Gr.2 Mehl-Muhlens Rennen winner Aviso (Tertullian) and the Listed winner Avocette (Kings Lake; grandam of the Gr.1

Melbourne Cup and Gr.1 Tancred Stakes winner Almandin).

BRITAIN

ELEGANT ESCAPE SNATCHES GLORYElegant Escape (Dubai Destination) landed a last-gasp victory in the Listed Future Stars Intermediate Chase at Sandown yesterday, over-hauling the gallant Thomas Patrick (Winged Love) in the shadow of the post.

Thomas Patrick set out to make all in the 3m chase, although a small mistake at the 14th fence briefly checked his momentum. Elegant Escape and Coo Star Sivola (Assessor) disputed second during the first half of the race but the latter could not live with Elegant Escape when Tom O’Brien asked him to quicken two out. Thomas Patrick looked to have the measure of Elegant Escape, particularly after the latter was clumsy at the last, but O’Brien rallied his mount and, after switching to challenge, the pair managed to pass Thomas Patrick and score by half a length. Coo Star Sivola too third, ten lengths in arrears, with a never-threatening Terrefort (Martaline) the last of the four runners, being virtually pulled up on the run in.

Bred by Jay Leahy and trained by Colin Tizzard for John Romans, Elegant Escape is a Goffs graduate three times over, having sold as a foal, store and at the Goffs Punchestown Sale in 2016. Gr.1-placed three times last season, the six-year-old gelding is out of the Orchestra mare Graineualle, also dam of three others winners, including Dubai Shen, a full-brother to Elegant Escape.

ITALY

TOP-LEVEL TRIUMPH FOR CHAMP DE BATAILLE

The French-bred Champ De Bataille (Dream Well) battled gamely and repeated his 2017 success in the Gr.1 Gran Corsa Siepi Di Milano, a 4000m event over hurdles yesterday at San Siro.

The seven-year-old, trained in Czech Republic by Josef Vana and ridden by his son Josef Vana Jnr, ran his heart out and confirmed that he relishes heavy ground and the demanding racecourse of San Siro. Champ De Bataille stalked the honest pace set by Chateaudemalmaison (War Front) and started to put some pressure on around the last turn. The favourite Aztek (Moonjaz) moved smoothly to challenge at the second last and looked like the most probable winner at the last but Champ De Bataille fought back and crossed the line a neck in front of his rival while Mezajy (Makfi) ran a very promising race, collecting third place on his second Italian start.

Champ De Bataille dramatically reversed the form with Aztek, who left him six lengths behind in the Gr.1 Gran Corsa Siepi di Merano back in September. The winning jockey explained: “He was a tired horse at Meran and my dad made the right move, sending him two weeks in a paddock at home. We were a bit concerned before the race because he lacked a bit of work but his freshness turned in a winning card. Champ De Bataille is a very game horse, he

sur-Mer for just €22,900 after a fourth place on the Flat. The colt, who scored once in France when trained by Henri-Alex Pantall, has won three times over hurdles and has a brilliant future in fronte of him.

never gave up and the way he fought back after the last jump speaks volumes about his courage.”

Champ De Bataille, Gr.1-placed at Auteuil in his early days, joined Josef Vana during the summer last year. He was landing his third Gr.1 in Italy and has earned more than €118,000 for owner Scuderia Aichner. The French trainer François-Marie Cottin paid just €5,000 for him at the Arqana February Sale in 2013 and Champ De Bataille earned more than €407,000 for his former owner Xavier Kepa. His dam La Champmesle (Turgeon) has not been covered for four season since she produced Champ De Bataille and was purchased, in foal to Kapgarde, by PB Bloodstock at the 2016 Arqana December Sale. The 14-year-old broodmare delivered a yearling colt from that mating.

EASY VICTORY FOR MENSCHThe Gr.2 Premio Giulio Berlingieri, once known as the Derby for

three-year-olds over hurdles, returned a very impressive winner. The French-bred Mensch (Silver Frost) relished the demanding conditions and the step up to 3600m and strolled home 15 lengths clear from Edef Xam (New Approach), the half-brother to the 2017 Breeders’ Cup hero Talismanic (Medaglia D’Oro). Mensch, trained by Raffaele Romano and ridden by Jiri Kousek, cruised in front before the second last and jumped the last perfectly to score unextended.

Jiri Kousek explained: “I already had ridden him at Merano but San Siro is really his favourite playground. This young horse has plenty of ability and stamina”.

Owner Christian Troger claimed Mensch last winter at Cagnes-
