SENSOR TECHNOLOGYThere are two main types of smoke alarm.The SI-601 Standard Smoke Alarm uses anionisationtypesensortodetectthepresenceof smoke. Ionisation type smoke alarms aregenerally more effective at detecting fast,flaming fires which consume combustiblematerials rapidly and spread fire quickly.The SO-601 Toast Proof Smoke Alarm usesanoptical(photoelectric)typesensorwhichismore effective at detecting slowburningfires, which can smoulder for hours beforeburstingintoflames.

TOAST PROOF = Less sensitive to cookingfumes. (Optical alarms are less prone tonuisancealarmsduetocookingfumes.)

APPLICATION

WARNING:YourFireAngelsmokealarmcanbeinstalledintoanewbuildproperty

asadditionalprotectiontoanexistingsmokedetection system only. It cannot be usedas a substitute for a hard wired system asrequired in new build properties. In thistype of property the building regulationsrequire alarms to be interlinked. You canobtain further information from your localfire service or building control departmentat your local council offices. These sourcesgenerally provide advice on new builds orprojectsthatrequireplanningpermission.

Your smoke alarm typically meets theminimumrequirementsforfamilylivingunitsinexistingbuildings,as longasat leastoneunit is installed on each floor/level of yourproperty.

Inordertoachievetheearliestfirewarning,werecommendthatasmokealarmisfittedinallroomswherethetemperatureisnormallybetween 4°C (40°F) and 38°C (100°F). Thetype of smoke alarm used in each locationshould be appropriate to the environment.Checkthesectionon‘Positioning’toensurethat the smoke alarm is to be correctlypositioned for the particular dwelling intowhichitisintendedtobeinstalled.

WARNING: The alarm positions shownoverleaf are based on typical homes.

only as a guide. Check with your local FireandRescueServiceforfurtherguidance.

InstitutionsandHotelsThis includes motels, hospitals, day carefacilities, long-term health care facilities,boarding houses and dormitories. Yoursmoke alarm can be used in individualsleeping/residentrooms,providingthesameconditions are met as for a single-familyresidence. However, there must already bea primary fire detection system that meetsregulatory requirements for common areassuch as lobbies and hallways. Use of thissmoke alarm in common areas may notprovide sufficient fire warning to residentsormeetregulatoryrequirements.Thissmokealarm is designed to operate as standalonesmokealarm.

WARNING: This FireAngel smoke alarmwillnotcommunicatewithothersmoke

alarmsorfirealarmsystems.Itisnotintendedasasubstituteforacompletealarmsystem.

MobileHomesandCaravansThissmokealarmissuitableforuseinmobilehomesandcaravans.

CommercialandIndustrialPremisesThis smoke alarm is not intended for anynon-residential, commercial or industrialapplication,nor for anyotherpurpose thandescribedabove.

POSITIONING

Ionisationtypesmokealarmsaregenerallymore effective at detecting fast, flamingfireswhichconsumecombustablematerialsrapidlyandspreadfirequickly.

Examples fastflamingfires= Ignitedpaper,flamingcurtainsandoilfires.

Optical(ToastProof)smokealarmsarelessprone to false alarms from cooking fumes,are therefore suitable for locations nearkitchens.Howeveropticalsmokealarmsaremore susceptible to nuisance alarms fromsteamandshouldnotbelocatedtooclosetobathroomsandshowers.

Examples of slow smouldering fires =cigarette on furniture and bedding,overheatingelectricalcables.

It is recommended that your FireAngelsmoke alarm is NOT to be fitted in thefollowinglocations:

•Bathrooms,shower-rooms,andotherverydamporhumidareas,wherethemoisturecancauseunwantedalarms.

•Kitchens.Kitchenareasshouldbeprotectedwithself-containedHeatAlarms,asthecombustionparticlesfromcookinginkitchenswillresultinunwantedalarmsandpermanentcontaminationofthesmokealarm’ssensor.

• Inareaswhereexcessivedustordirtcouldcontaminatethesensingchamber,making

itoversensitiveorimpairingsmokeentry.• Inareaswheretheambienttemperatureisnotcontrolledandmayregularlydriftbelow4°C(40°F)orabove38°C(100°F)e.g.unheatedbuildings,openatticspaces.

•Verydirty,dustyorgreasyareas.• Inverydraughtyareas,suchasclosetoceilingfansorfreshairvents.Draughtscanblowsmokeawayfromthealarm.

• Ininsectinfestedareas.Insectscanclogopeningstothesensingchamber,preventingsmokeentryorcausingunwantedalarms.

WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF MY

SMOKE ALARM? Your FireAngel smoke alarm is designedto alert you by sounding an alarmwhen itsenses smoke, i.e. it can only sense smokeand alert you if smoke reaches it! If a firedevelopsinanarearemotefromthelocationof the smoke alarm, such as another roomor another level, smokemay not reach thesmokealarminsufficienttimeorquantitytosenseandalertyoutothedanger.

We recommend that as a minimum youinstall both ionisation and optical smokealarms on every floor of your property. Forcomprehensive coverage a smoke alarmshouldalsobefittedineveryroom.

Thissmokealarmcannotbeusedtoprovideprimary fire detection in common areasusedbydifferentresidentssuchasblocksofflatsandhotels.TheFireAngelsmokealarmmaynotalarmbeforeafirecausesdamage,injuryordeath,asthesmokemaynotreachthe smoke alarm in time. Examples includesmoking inbed and violent gas explosions.This smoke alarm may not respond in areasonabletimeifitisnotinstalledinthebestposition,oriffurnitureorotherobstaclesarelocated between the smoke alarm and thefire.

WARNING: Your smoke alarm will notoperatewithoutabatteryinstalled.Only

batteries listed on page 10 should be usedandmustbechangedimmediatelywhenthelowbatterysignalisgivenortheunitwillfail.Testweekly, readand followall instructionsortheunitwillnotoperateproperly.

Your FireAngel smoke alarm will adviseyou of a low battery condition by emittingan audible ‘chirp’ every 40 seconds. Whenthis occurs youmust change thebattery inthe unit within 7 days to maintain correctoperation.

IMPORTANT: Smoke alarms aredesigned to alert you with an audible

alarm at a level specified by the EuropeanStandard EN 14604: 2005. Closed doors,walls and high ambient noise levels willreducethislevel.Temporaryorpermanentlyimpaired hearing may result in the alarmnot being heard. Stereos, traffic and otherloud sources may also prevent the alarmbeing heard. Heavy sleepers and residentsundertheinfluenceofalcoholordrugsmayalso not hear or respond to the alarm. Testandcheckthatyoucanhearthealarminallcircumstances. If in doubt install additionalsmokealarmsasrequired.

WARNING: The Smoke alarm is notsuitable for alerting hearing impaired

residents. We recommend that speciallydesignedwarning systemsbe installed thatwillalerthearingimpairedresidents.

WARNING: The smoke alarmaccompanying this manual employs

the latest technology and is independentlytested as being compliant with all therelevant European Standards. However,as with any electronic product it may failand may not sense all types of fire withinsufficient time to alert you of the dangerandprovideadequatetimeforyourescape.In order to maximise your level of safetyalways test your smoke alarm frequentlyto ensure it is in full working order.YourFireAngelsmokealarmisonlysuitableforuseindomestic/residentialapplicationsas covered in thismanual. It isnot suitablefor commercial or industrial applications.It is designed to sense smoke and alertyou. It will not sense carbon monoxide,flames, heat or gas. It will not prevent orextinguishfires.

ThisFireAngelsmokealarmhasalimitedlifeof10yearsandshouldnotbeconsideredasa substitute for life or property insurance.Like all electronic equipment, it can wearout or fail. It should be tested weekly andreplacedimmediatelyintheeventoffailure,andreplacedevery10yearsregardless.

HOW TO INSTALL YOUR SMOKE ALARM

IMPORTANT:Make sure you have readand understood this manual before

installingyoursmokealarm.

1Preparation

Attach the mounting plate to a ceiling orwall.

Ifthealarmistobemountedonawall,ensurethe mounting plate is aligned correctly. Themountingplate has an arrowmouldedintotheplastic.Thisindicatestheorientationin which the mounting plate should beinstalled. This ensures thatwhen the alarmisfitted theventswillbecentraland facingupwards.

IMPORTANT: Before installing yoursmoke alarm the battery must be

removed fromthealarmandtheprotectivewrapperonthebatteryshouldberemoved.The battery should then be refitted. Thebattery compartment has been designedto prevent the battery being insertedincorrectly.

CAUTION: The horn is designed to beloud to wake you in an emergency.

Avoid placing your ear close to the alarmwheninstallingbattery.

Insert the battery that was provided withthe alarm making sure that the positiveandnegativeconnectionsare inthecorrectposition, see diagram. The red LED on thefrontshouldnowflashonceevery40secondstoshowthealarmisactive.

Use the fixing slots on themounting plateas a guide when marking the positionof the drill holes. With an appropriatelysized drill, drill the holes and insertthe plastic fixing anchors supplied(ifneeded).

NOTE: Onrareoccasionsthealarmmaysoundwhenthebatteryisfirstinstalled.

If this happens, see Troubleshooting onpage16.

The backing plate has a safety mechanismwhich prevents the alarm being installedwithout a battery. When the battery isinserted this safety mechanism is releasedmeaningthatthealarmcanbeattachedtothebackingplate.

4FitYourFireAngelSmokeAlarm

The alarm will only lock into place in oneparticularposition.Positionthesmokealarmoverthemountingplateliningupthecentralvent on the front of the alarmwith the ‘X’moulded into the plastic on the mountingplate and turn clockwise. After one quarterturn you should feel the alarm click intoplace.

OPERATIONNormalconditionThe redLEDon the front shouldflashonceevery40secondstoshowthealarmisactive.

LowBatteryCondition

IMPORTANT:Yoursmokealarmrequiresa battery with a sufficient capacity of

powertooperatecorrectly,thismustalsobecorrectlyinstalled.

Shouldyour FireAngel smokealarmenter alowbattery condition, the unitwill emit anaudible‘chirp’onceevery40seconds.Whenthis occurs you must replace the batteryimmediately. Your FireAngel smoke alarmwill continue to warn of this low batteryconditionforatleast7days,however,failuretochange thebatteryafter this timewouldmean your smoke alarm has insufficientpowertoalertyouinarealfiresituation.

BATTERY REPLACEMENTIMPORTANT:Onlythefollowingbatteriescan be used for replacement. Use of

a battery other than those recommendedbelowmayhaveadetrimentaleffectonthedetector’soperation.Useofa lithium(long-life)batterycouldprovidepowerfor10yearsundernormaloperatingconditions,meaningthereisnoneedforanannualbatterychange.

ALARM SMART SILENCE™DANGER:IfyourFireAngelsmokealarmemitsthefullalarmsignalandyouarenot

testingtheunit,thesmokealarmiswarningyouofapotentiallydangeroussituationthatrequires your immediate attention. Onlyuse thealarm silence functionaftermakingsurethatthereisnoongoingfireemergencysituation.Donotblocktheventsonthealarmordisablethesmokealarminanyway,asthiswill removeyourprotection. Intheeventofaknown falsealarmsuchascooking fumesyour smoke alarm can be silenced in thefollowingway.

Yoursmokealarmfeatures“SmartSilence™”technology. Smoke alarms can sometimesreact to cooking fumes or other nonemergency situations. Should your alarmsoundthecentraltestbuttoncanbeusedtotemporarilysilencethealarm.Youralarmwillautomaticallyreturntofullsensitivitywithin10minutes.

NOTE:Ifthelevelofsmokereachingthealarmisveryhighthealarmsilencewill

beoverriddenandthealarmwillcontinuetosound.

ROUTINE MAINTENANCEYour FireAngel smoke alarm has beendesigned to be as maintenance-free aspossible, however in addition to batterymaintenance, there are several things youmustdotokeepitworkingproperly.

CAUTION: Your FireAngel smoke alarmis a sealed electrical device and no

attempt should bemade to open the case.Attempting toopen thecasewill invalidateyourWarranty.

TestingTestyoursmokealarmonceeveryweekseesection‘AlarmTest’onpage11.AnytestfailuresshouldbereportedtotheFireAngelTechnicalSupportTeamonpage18.

Cleaning Asaminimumyoursmokealarmshouldbecleanedonceevery3monthsusingyourvacuumcleanerfittedwiththesoftbrushattachment.

WARNING:YourFireAngelsmokealarmmayfalsealarmwhenitisbeingcleaned

usingavacuumcleaner.

IMPORTANT: Do not use solvents orcleanersonyourFireAngelsmokealarm,

as they may cause damage to the sensoror circuitry. The unit can be wiped with aslightlydampcloth.

CAUTION: Do not Paintthesmokealarmas this may block the openings and

preventsmokefromenteringthesensor.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OFA FIRE IN YOUR HOME

• Ifyouhavemadeafamilyescapeplanandpracticeditwithyourfamily,youhaveincreasedtheirchancesofescapingsafely.Gooverthefollowingruleswithyourchildreneachtimeyouhavefiredrills.Thiswillhelpeveryonerememberthemincaseofarealemergency.

•Don’tpanic,staycalm.Yoursafeescapemaydependonthinkingclearlyandrememberingwhatyouhavepracticed.

•Notifyeverymemberintheresidenceofthefire.

•Getoutofthehouseasquicklyaspossible.Followaplannedescaperoute.Donotstoptocollectanythingortogetdressed.

•Feelthedoorstoseeiftheyarehot.Iftheyarehot,donotopenthem–useanalternativeescaperoute.

•Stayclosetothefloor.Smokeandhotgasesrise.

•Coveryournoseandmouthwithacloth(wetifpossible).Takeshort,shallowbreaths.

•Keepdoorsandwindowsclosed.Openthemonlyifyouhavetoinordertoescape.

•Meetatyourplannedmeetingplaceafterleavingthehouse.Carryoutaheadcount.

•CalltheFireandRescueSeviceon999assoonaspossiblefromoutsideyourhouse.Ifpossibleuseaneighboursphoneorcall

boxratherthanamobilephone(asthelocationcanbetracedfromthenumberifthelineislost,orthebatteryrunsoutforexample).

•Givetheaddressandyourname.•Nevergobackinsidethebuildinguntilamemberofthefireservicehastoldyouitissafetodoso.

Contact your local Fire and Rescue Service.Theywillgiveyoumoreideasabouthowtomakeyourhomesaferfromfiresandhowtoplanyourfamily’sescape.

REPAIRDO NOT attempt to repair your FireAngelsmoke alarm doing so will invalidateyour warranty. If your smoke alarm is notoperating properly, see the next section‘Troubleshooting’. If you cannot solve theproblem, please call the Technical SupportLine.

If your FireAngel smoke alarm is no longerunderwarranty, replace immediatelywithacomparableFireAngelbrandsmokealarm.

DISPOSAL

Waste electrical products shouldnot be disposed of with regularhouseholdwaste.

Please recycle where facilities exist. Checkwith your local authority, retailer or theFireAngel Technical Support Line (see page18 forcontactdetails) for recycling/disposaladviceasregionalvariationsapply.

The batteries should be removed beforedisposal of the detector. Both the batteriesand the detector should be disposed of inlinewithcurrentregulations.

HOW TO MAKE YOURHOME SAFER

Installing smoke alarms is only one step inprotecting your family fromfires. Youmustalsotakestepstoreducethechancesoffiresstartinginyourhome.Ifafiredoesstart,youmustincreaseyourchancesofescaping.

Tohaveagoodfiresafetyprogramyoumust:

4Developafamilyescapeplanandpracticeitwitheveryoneinthehousehold,includingsmallchildrenifyouhavethem.•Drawafloorplanofyourhome,andfindtwowaystoexitfromeachroom.Thereshouldbeonewaytogetoutofeachbedroomwithoutopeningthedoor,andalternatemeansofescapefromanupperfloorintheeventofthestairsbeingblocked(suchasafireescape).

•Makesureeveryonerecognisesthesmokealarmsignalandknowshowtoreacttoit.

• Iftherearesmallchildrentoconsideritisimportanttoexplaintothemwhatthesmokealarmsignalmeans.Teachthemthattheymustbepreparedtoleavethehomebythemselvesifnecessary.Showthemhowtochecktoseeifdoorsarehotbeforeopeningthem.Showthemhowtostayclosetothefloorandcrawlifnecessary.Showthemhowtouseanalternativeexitifthedoorishotandshouldnotbeopened.

•Decideonameetingplaceasafedistancefromyourhouse.Again,ifyouhavethem,makesurethatallyourchildrenunderstandthattheyshouldgoandwaitforyouthereifthereisafire.

•Holdfiredrillsatleastevery6monthstomakesurethateveryone,includingsmallchildren,knowwhattodotoescapesafely.

•KnowwheretogotocalltheFireandRescueServicefromoutsideyourhome.ContactyourlocalFireandRescueSevice.Theywillgiveyoumoreideasabouthowtomakeyourhomesaferfromfiresandhowtoplanyourfamily’sescape.

WARRANTYSprue Safety Products Ltd warrants to theoriginal purchaser that its enclosed smokealarmbe free fromdefects inmaterials andworkmanship under normal residential useandserviceforaperiodof5(five)yearsfromthe date of purchase in the case of theSI-601 and SO-601 products. Provided it isreturned with postage prepaid and proofof purchase date, Sprue Safety ProductsLtdherebywarrants thatduring the5 (five)year period commencing from the dateof purchase in the case of the SI-601 andSO-601 Sprue Safety Products Ltd, at itsdiscretion,agreestoreplacetheunitfreeofcharge. The warranty on any replacementSI or SO range of alarm, will last for theremainder of the period of the originalwarranty in respect of the alarm originallypurchased–thatisfromthedateoforiginalpurchase and not from the date of receiptof the replacement product. Sprue SafetyProducts Ltd reserves the right to offer analternative product similar to that beingreplaced if the original model is no longeravailable or in stock. This warranty appliesto the original retail purchaser from thedate of original retail purchase and is nottransferable.Proofofpurchaseisrequired.

This warranty does not cover damageresultingfromaccident,misuse,disassembly,abuse or lack of reasonable care of theproduct, or applications not in accordancewith the user manual. It does not coverevents and conditions outside of Sprue

Safety Products Ltd’s control, such as Actsof God (fire, severe weather etc.). It doesnot apply to retail stores, service centresor any distributors or agents. Sprue SafetyProductsLtdwillnotrecogniseanychangestothiswarrantybythirdparties.SprueSafetyProducts Ltd shall not be liable for anyincidentalorconsequentialdamagescausedby the breach of any expressed or impliedwarranty.
