Fire Season Summary
The Eastern Area experienced a lower than average fire season. There were 5,750 fires for 38,852 acres compared with the Eastern Area ten year average (10,832 Fires for 128,014 Acres). There was one Type 2 (Pisarek) Incident Management Team assignment to the Swan Lake fire in Alaska. There were two National Buying Team assignments; one to Alaska (Northrop) and the other to Nevada (Linn). The Midewin Hotshots were mobilized seven times. There were thirty three Type 2IA crew assignments. There were one hundred eighty five engine assignments. It was a slow western fire season with nine days at National Preparedness level 3 and no days days at National Preparedness Level 4 or 5. The previous year we were at PL 4 for 14 days and PL 5 for 35 days. The Eastern Coordination Center mobilized overhead, crews and equipment within and outside the geographic area primarily to the Southern Area and Alaska.
4
Fuels and Weather Summary
Precipitation and soil moisture anomalies were at or above normal across the majority of the Eastern Area in 2019. Overall, this led to near to below normal National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS) and Canadian Fire Dangers Indices as well as above normal fuel moistures at representative Remote Automatic Weather Stations (RAWS) throughout the Eastern Area.
Below to near normal temperatures overall affected the northern and western tiers of the Eastern Area during the 2019 spring and fall fire seasons curtailing overall fire potential. Warmer than normal temperatures prevailed over the Mid-Atlantic States.
Overall, wetter than normal conditions across much of the Eastern Area produced below normal fire activity in 2019.
