INTRODUCTION TO EAST INDIA

East India (also known as Eastern India) is a region of India consisting of the Indian

states of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand ,Odisha and also the union territory Andaman and Nicobar Islands. West Bengal's capital Kolkata is the largest city of this region. The states of Odisha and West Bengal share some cultural and linguistic characteristics with Bangladesh and with the state of Assam. ODIAS the only classical Language..

MANIPUR COSTUMESABOUT MANIPURManipur is one of the pretty states of India which is located in the remote north eastern part of the country. The state is blessed with natural beauty and has unique culture, tradition and heritage. Though there’s not much inflow of tourism in the state, every year the land observes tourism festival,  known as “Sangai Festival” for 10 days with great enthusiasm in the month of November to promote tourism in the state. People of Manipur are very religious and friendly, they welcome guests with heartfelt hospitality.

Men generally wear a WHITE DHOTI on ceremonial ocassions and put on a PAGRI.

KHAMEN CHATPA is a ceremonial dhoti that cannot be worn by any common person. It was presented as a token of reward by the king to brave persons.

COSTUMES OF WEST BENGALABOUT WEST BENGAL

West Bengal's capital Kolkata, the capital of British India until 1911, is the biggest metropolis and economically dominant city of the region and third largest in India and one of the fastest growing cities in the world.

It is also the main centre of commerce or the commercial capital of Eastern and north eastern India.

WOMEN COSTUMES1. The typical Bengali fashion for women can be seen in Saree

(Sari). This is one of the topmost traditional and widespread dresses for ladies.

2. Generally, the West Bengal sarees are designed by silk or cotton. Salwar Kameez has also become a common dress among girls. These are available in various designs and colors in the stress markets or shopping centers.

3. In rural and urban areas, Hindu married women wear sari, blouse, Muslim women “salwar”, and “kamiz”.4. The fabric of the Bengali cotton sari is unique with premium

quality produced by local weavers known as “tantis”.5. They are expert weaving fine quality fabric with refined thread

work. Bengali silk sari is famous for its rich, sophisticated and elegant quality and texture.

6. Cotton saris as Jamdani and Baluchari and silk saris are most preferred wearing in festive and religious occasions.

7. The typical Bengali style of draping a sari is altogether different where the sari is not pleated but the “Pallu” is kept loose over left shoulder with a bunch of keys tied with the knot.

 The Bengali bride is dressed in red or crimson colored rich golden embroidered Banarasi silk saree complimented with traditional Bengali jewelry.

The head is covered with red colored beautiful veil or “mukut”, forehead adorned with attractive patterned red Bindis increasing the beauty and charm of the girl.

MEN COSTUMES1. Dhotis are commonly worn by Hindus.

2. The dress is a long loincloth made of silk or cotton. Dhoti forms a traditional dress for men in West Bengal.

3. Previously, Dhotis are prevalent only in white color but nowadays different colors of Dhotis available in the market.

4. Lungi is also like dhoti which is widely known for a traditional dress for men. It is worn around the waist just like dhoti. Men living in villages usually wear it on regular basis.

5.  In rural areas, Hindu men wear “dhoti” and Muslim men wear “lungi”.

6. Typically, men go shirtless but occasionally put on a vest or long shirt called “Kurta” as upper garment 

7. “lungi” is a piece of checkered cloth that is draped around the waist.

8. Bengali groom is neatly dressed in crème colored silk dhoti and Kurta with a gorgeous turban that covers his head gives him a royal look.

JEWELLERY AND ACCESSORIES1.Ivory jewelry and accessories are gifted to Bengali bride at the time of the wedding. The softness and skills required to carve designs into ivory results into very costly jewelry. 2.Bangles and pendant are most famous ivory jewelry worn by traditional married Bengali women.3.The rose water sprinkled brooches, pendants, hair pins, hair clasps, nose ring, armlets and necklace forms the traditional Bengali jewelry. These ornaments are lighter in weight, which requires lot of intricate work to design by the skillful artisans.
