EAS, he explains, is providing Mold, Asbestos, and Restoration testing & consulting services. “We set ourselves apart by having a diverse
background and understanding of what restoration and insurance pro-fessionals need from us. I know what a contractor needs to keep their client happy, and help the adjuster close their file. A Bay Area native, Jacob grew up in Fremont, and went to high school and college in Santa Cruz.“I worked for my father’s restoration firm when I was a teenager and throughout my college years, and into my twenties.”In reality, Jacob started Environmental Assessment Services back in 2005. “I took a break, working with another firm since 2010,” he explains. “The time and circumstances are now right, and now I am back at it with EAS.”

2015 Early-Bird Membership Deal! Join or Renew Now & SaveOn the success of a similar offer the past couple of years, the East Bay Claims Association Board of Directors has elected to offer-up a bit of a reward for
returning members for the coming year, as well as an enticement for new members. “We really appreciate all the support this organization has enjoyed the past several years,” stated EBCA President Joe Baughman. Overall membership and meeting attendance has been consistent and substantial. Still, the sense that there aren’t many adjusters at any given function remains pervasive. “As with all our sister groups, we continue to encourage the carrier claims people and independent adjusters participate, and to become more involved,” Joe added. “East Bay Claims Association is always committed to maintaining a high degree of professional courtesy within our ranks.”
The organization has been actively taking measures to continue to raise its standing within the community, as well.As an established charitable 501c(3) non-profit organization, EBCA has added the status of the Continuing Education Provider credential to the reasons to be more involved. There seems to be a bit of a revival of carriers supporting their claims people joining and supporting their local associations. The EBCA Board has opted to continue to offer annual FREE Member-ships to insurance claims adjusters. Completion and submission of a simple membership application now allows all such claims people the benefits of membership. The Early-Bird discount amounts to a 10% savings off the normal annual membership dues. Beginning October 1, 2015, and running through the end of the year, current members may renew for just $45 for individuals, or $90 for Corporate membership (three people per corporate membership - multiple corporate memberships accepted). New members joining for the first time receive the balance of the current year and all of 2015. Sign up or renew now at EastBayAdjusters.org.

Hensley Delivers Xactimate CE Course to Enthusiastic Crowd

By Jodi DeVillier
Gene Hensley, of Vale Training Solutions, gave a three hour con-tinuing education class to a small, but enthusiastic, group of East Bay Claims Associate members Wednesday, October 14, 2015. The attendees took full advance of the smaller class with lots of questions and interaction.Gene’s presentation was on Plumb-ing, Electrical and HVAC with the goal of taking the “scare” out of these three specialty trades by understanding the practical usage and how to write an estimate from a position of knowing you are accurate. Mr. Hensley went into detail on galvanized, copper and PVC pipe complete with samples of each and a brief history of the usage and problems with each. He then moved on to drain and

winner, Jackie Mezeul, of PW Stephens, Inc.
Xactimate instruction was detailed and personal with a small class. EBCA members had fun with masks at the October luncheon.
Checking folks in at the front were Treasurer John Ehlert and Board Member Jennifer Pinney.
Gene Hensley shared his vast knowledge in his, what?, relaxed and comfortable style.

Join the East Bay Claims Association in welcoming our November 11, 2015 luncheon guest speaker, Mr. Phillip Porto, of Unified Investigations & Sciences, Inc.
Mr. Porto will delve into issues surrounding Fire Investigations, including: purpose, science and management.
Phil Porto began his fire Service Career as a Resident Volunteer with the City of Davis Fire Dept. while attending The University of California Davis.
Mr. Porto says he “caught the ‘Fire Bug’” and was hired by the City of Roseville Fire Department, where he served for 10 years. “I was a firefighter and rose to the ranks of engineer, EMT, Captain, Training Officer and fire Investigator,” he explains.
“I entered State Service with the State Fire Marshal’s Office in 1985 as one of 13 Arson Bomb Investigators, and retired in 2006 after 21 years,” he states modestly.
“I applied and was hired by Unified Investigations and Sciences, Inc. and rose to the position of District Manager.”
With all these years on his resume, Phil is taking a bit different tact these days. “I presently am slowing down my work pace, getting out of the fast lane and merging into the semi-retired lane as a Senior Fire Investigator.”
He brings his depth and breadth of knowledge and understanding to share with the EBCA membership and guests November 11th. Secure your spot now and invite your associates to join us then.

The October 14, 2015 and the November 11, 2015 EBCA meetings will both include the annual Food donation drive.
EBCA Doubles-Down on 2015 Food Drive Effort
Join the EBCA in supporting the Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano Counties by bringing a collection of non-perishable, new and wrapped food items to the next two meetings: October 14th and November 11th.Started in 1975, the Food Bank of Con-tra Costa and Solano Counties is cele-brating their 40th anniversary this year. The organization stores and distributes donated and purchased perishable and nonperishable food items. “We distribute food directly to low-in-come people at community sites and make food available for other nonprofit organizations serving the ill, needy and children,” they state on their web site. The Food Bank works to reduce food
waste, feed hungry people and raise public awareness of issues related to food and hunger. The organization reports that, in Con-tra Costa and Solano counties, 1 in 8 people rely on emergency food. “The Food Bank has developed programs that address the size of this need as well as nutritional needs of the people we serve.”
The Food Bank ensures safe food is available to the hungry in our com-munity. “We achieved a food safety certification and superior rating from the American Institute of Baking, Inter-national (AIB).” AIB accreditation and audits are internationally recognized as the most stringent in the food industry.

waste systems, before discussing some practical Xactimate training on plumbing.Next up was Electrical. “Electrical scares us all”, said Hensley with a warning to be careful, particularly in wet houses. Gene says, “the more I learn about electrical, the dumber I realize I am.” This comes from a general contractor, home builder and trainer of adjusters and contractors alike with over 44 years experience. He is a man who has a healthy respect for the dangers in the trades and a man humble enough to admit he doesn’t know it all. Gene has the ability to explain in a way that boils it down to the basics using analogies and sayings to get the point across. His down home style is interesting and educational with just the right amount of humor to make it stick. If you missed Gene at our luncheon earlier this year or last month’s CE Class, you missed a good one! We will invite Gene Hensley back again next year, but in between he graciously invited anyone to call or email with questions anytime. Gene can be reached at Vale Training Solutions, www.vale-trainingsolutions.com or 800-233-7095. The EBCA would like to thank and acknowledge Robert Mah, of RGL, as he leaves for other ventures.
