1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE

Valencia Bridge - Domokos Pálfai 2011 Sofia Paper Art Fest - Richard Sweeney

The point, line, plane can be defined as the foundation and basis for every architecture and designers in initiating the creation of conceptual shapes, lines, geometries that could be further transformed into three dimensional elements and forms. Point is the basic element for drawing. Moving a point to form a line, then sweep a line to generate a plane. This is mathematical rela-tionship among these three elements. If a plane is folded, a line is formed, if a plane is folded twice and one end of the fold meets the other, a point is formed.

In this exercise, my idea is to create a design that starts from a point, and from the point, lines are pushed ourwards, the power is transfering from the point to lines, and lines form a plane, the power transfering shows dynamism between them.

1.2 FRAME & INFILL

Billowing Sails Installation - Edouard Cabay and Margherita Del Grosso

Ferry Terminal Structure Model - M-yun

Frame and infill system is a structure that explores condition above the ground surface. The frame is defined as a permanent and fixed structure that is similar to the grid system in the compposition of regular bays and cubes. The infill is a more flexible system where surfaces and volumes can be rotat-ed, folded or extruded to create interior spaces.

I took inspiration from a billowing sails installation by Edouard Cabay and Margherita Del Grosso. My design mainly express that there is a srtong and tense relationship between the frame and infill. I used timber to build the frame and fabric to form the infill, the fabric is showing a strength and tension by stretching and fixed on timber.

1.3 MASS

When we are talking about mass, what are we talking about? Most related words that most people think-ing of are dark, enormous and solid , because many buildings/architectures are built in this way.

However, for me, I think mass can be soft but power-ful. In my drawings, it shows a strong and initensive contrast between the softness and hardness, void and solid. Mass does not mean hard and tough, the con-trast shows by the interior softness and void illustrates that mass also can be soft but strong. The contrast is powerful, not only giving a visual impact but also bring a sense of weight.

2.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE

Herring island is an isolated and enclosed island, seper-ate from Melbourne city. The island was mainly used for family retreat. When I went to the island, I felt that I have escaped from a modern real world and into a totally iso-lated and secret place.

My conceptacle has combined three key ideas from past three exercises. I used fabric for underground part which is retrieved from my Mass exercise to show the contrast. And for above ground part, by combining the ideas of dynamism and intension, I made the second landform to create the movement.

2.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN

My idea of design is to show a progress of a people try to hide a secret. The above ground is the disguised or armed of a secret, it’s rational and restrainied, but still have a sharp top to defense and protect the secret, the shelter on it is another layer of disguise. The underground is the secret it self, it’s soft, it’s the most private part of a person which is not allow others to touch.

2.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

After having feedback from tutor last week, I made changes to the last idea. I started thinking of what the core of a secret actually is. And I found out that the core of a secret which is the most concealed and sensitive part, is not soft, but hard and sharp, it can hurt people, not only the one trying to hide it but also the one wants to explore it.

I made the model by mirror material, which is also a representation of secret - it reflects. When you standing on the ground, you can see it, but what you are actu-ally seeing?

3.0 REFLECTION

This project was an really challenging one for me, but it was also exciting. When I first get to know the subject, I was really lack of confidence and felt confused. My tutor, Scott Woods, he really made me challenged myself, his high expectation and standard made me push myself harder and harder, letting me start thinking of how to design and what architecture really is. Scott lets me have much more and deeper understanding and acknowledgement of architecture.

During the progress of making the project, I learned a lot, froming basic acknowledgement like how to make architecture drawings to deeper like start learning to think as a designer, the subject make me more ‘architectural‘. I’m really proud that I completed the project and really appreci-ate the subject make me start learning what art is.
