Wrap Up
Most residency and medical schools have an ambulatory medicine educational program in place. However,
academic institutions often struggle with certain challenges in ambulatory education including maintaining continuity with primary care patients, innovative ways of communicating with patients, and panel management. This course will highlight effective strategies developed to manage these challenges. In addition, this precourse will showcase certain innovative educational approaches to ambulatory medicine including telemedicine and resident-led specialty clinics. Participants will participate in several deliverables that can be implemented in their own home programs immediately upon completion of this course
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this precourse, participants will be able to:
• Develop strategies for residents to manage their primary care panel and enhance continuity with their patients
• Learn innovative approaches to ambulatory education and apply them to their institutions
• Create unique schedules or special clinics that would enhance the educational experiences of learners
TARGET AUDIENCE

Wrap Up
Achieving and maintaining diversity and inclusiveness is critical to the success of UME and GME programs. In
addition to ensuring a wide variety of perspectives contributing to a more adaptive learning climate, there is evidence that a health care workforce that reflects the diversity of the general population in the United States is key to improving health care access and eliminating health disparities, particularly for vulnerable populations. In this precourse, participants will learn how to promote an increasingly diverse and inclusive environment in UME and GME programs. They will practice strategies to help identify and address unconscious bias and microaggressions. They will also discuss innovative programs to create a more culturally responsive learning climate where learners and faculty are valued and supported with the goal of fostering academic and clinical excellence.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this precourse, participants will be able to:
• Explain the importance of diversity and inclusiveness in training programs and the role it plays in reducing health disparities
• Describe strategies to recognize unconscious bias and mitigate its effects on recruitment and retention of learners and faculty
• Learn methods to support learners and faculty experiencing microaggressions and discrimination
• Identify ways to support the professional development and promotion of learners and faculty underrepresented in medicine
TARGET AUDIENCE
The precourse is designed for program directors, clerkship directors, faculty, and staff involved in student education.

The precourse is designed to explore ways medicine clerkship directors may address the challenges of
adapting to the core EPAs for entering residency that proposed by AAMC in May 2014. All medical students should be able to perform these 13 activities upon entering residency, regardless of their future career specialty. The precourse will begin with an overview of the EPAs and the core EPA pilot. Two speakers from medical schools funded by an AAMC grant will talk about what they have learned. While most of the EPAs focus on skills that are traditionally taught in the medical school curriculum, several EPAs deal with new objectives. Presenters will describe efforts to adopt EPAs addressing newer objectives. Core clerkship and subinternship directors from medical schools that are not part of the AAMC pilot will discuss integrating interprofessional education and high value care into the internal medicine clerkship. Through the precourse, participants will have time to reflect on information presented, ask questions, and share ideas about changes to curriculum elements.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this precourse, participants will be able to:
• Discuss the 13 core EPAs for entering into residency.
• Describe the core EPA pilot and the lessons learned.
• Incorporate interprofessional education into the clerkships
• Incorporate high value care into the clerkship.
• Integrate activities to prepare students for the core EPAs into the clerkship.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This precourse is designed for core clerkship and subinternship directors as well as others involved in student education.

Alliance Statement on Meetings in Texas (from IBC of Skills)
Dear Colleagues:
Thank you for your support of the Alliance and its annual conferences. Online registration is now open for the 2017 Alliance Skills and Leadership Conference, which will be held October 19-21 at the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine, TX. The new title of the conference is part of an effort to more accurately describe our meetings and help members identify content that will be of high value for them. As you may know, California recently enacted a travel ban on several states that have passed legislation perceived as discriminating against the LGBTQ population. The list of banned states includes Texas, which will host both Alliance conferences in FY 2018. While the Alliance applauds the efforts of the California state government to support the LGBTQ community, AAIM unfortunately cannot change the site of this meeting or Academic Internal Medicine Week 2018, scheduled to be held March 18-21 in San Antonio, TX. We have contracts in place wherein canceling would be financially devastating to the Alliance. AAIM realizes that this decision will affect the ability of members at California's public institutions to attend the Skills and Leadership Conference as well as Academic Internal Medicine Week 2018 but is hopeful that some alternative approach may become available as we get closer to the conferences. Again, thanks. If you have questions about the conferences, AAIM, or this statement, please contact the Alliance office at (703) 341-4540 or [email protected] at your convenience. Sincerely,
Sara B. Fazio, MD James D. Marsh, MD D. Craig Brater, MDPAST AAIM BOARD CHAIR AAIM BOARD CHAIR AAIM PRESIDENT AND CEO
