This has been a very successful term andI am delighted that our overseas pupilsare fully involved in the life of theSchool. The 1st XV rugby team had anunbeaten season which is the first timethis has happened in the history of theSchool and Benson Hung was a keymember of the squad. AlexanderArtemenko and Yan Le have also playedimportant roles in a very important 2ndXV and they will undoubtedly beplaying 1st XV next year. This rugbysuccess has been matched by someoutstanding Hockey with our Germanpupils excelling. Julia Kilimann, Annavon Keller and Anna-Lotte Baltes haveall played key roles in the U16 Indoorand Outdoor Hockey squads. King’s isWest of England Champion at U16Indoor and Outdoor Hockey and hastherefore qualified for the National
Finals next term, whilst Julian Bloechlehas been an excellent goal keeper andMax Behm has played in outfield for theIndoor Boys’ Hockey squad who areCounty Champions and have qualifiedfor the National Finals. It has also been a successful term for
King’s drama as the whole Schoolmusical, “Oliver!” performed to packedhouses at the end of term. Alen Safaryanwas outstanding playing the role of BillSykes to much acclaim. Anna Thomasand Luisa Bongaerts joined us fromGermany and have fitted quickly intoour Choirs whilst Tobias Wegelcomposed and performed his own jazznumber at the Winter Concert.Highlights for the choirs includesinging at Gloucester Cathedral andMessiah at The Royal Albert Hall. Nextterm sees the choir at WinchesterCathedral. The School is now preparing for its
500th anniversary in 2019 and theGovernors have decided to build a new
Music School in the centre of theSchool campus to mark this specialanniversary. This state of the art facilitywill provide a wonderful setting for ourmusicians and we plan to open it with aRoyal visit in the Easter term of 2019.Work is ongoing at the moment toincrease the capacity for girls in ArionHouse so that by September 2016 wewill have all the girls’ houses the samesize. Mrs Maistrello and Ms Checketts
continue to support all our EAL pupils, not only with their academic andconversational English, but also with anextra layer of pastoral support. All ourEAL pupils leave King’s with thehighest possible English qualificationand I am very grateful to the EALdepartment for their expert guidance. I wish all the EAL pupils a relaxing
Christmas and New Year and I hopetheir journeys home at the end of termgo smoothly.

The Force has been strong in ourinternational pupils this term. Therecould be several reasons: an outstandinghockey season for both indoor andoutdoor girls’ teams with superbcontributions from Anna B, Anna V-Kand Julia. Or maybe Alen’s breathetaking villain as Bill Sykes in the schoolproduction of Oliver! Or even themagical Snow Ball hosted by Lyon andPriory houses for our junior pupils, asthe photographs show. Or possibly the
musical contribution to the choirs fromTobias, Anna T and Luisa. It could evenbe the new B.E.V.E Course for SixthForm, (Business, Economics VocabularyExpansion) although those with anintimate knowledge of English willknow the other meaning of bevy. Thelist goes on. Here in the EALdepartment we feel we know the realreason and you need look no furtherthan the articles written by some of theThird Form Cambridge First Certificatepupils Ibuki, Rocio and Jan Thomas.Using one of Yoda’s most famous quotesthe pupils all seemed to write articlesabout the fear of coming to England toschool and yet how important it is toovercome these worries, just have a goand everything will be alright. As Yoda
also said, ‘Fear is the path to the darkside.’Ms Checketts and I wish all our EAL
pupils a very Merry Christmas and yes,I’m going to see Star Wars as soon as itcomes out! Mrs Maistrello

Yoda’s Top QuotesArticle Writing Practice By Third Form First Certificate Class
“Do. Not do. There is no try.”I’m from Japan and I had a personalexperience when I was 11 years old. Icame to England when I had no Englishwhatsoever but I gave it a try, used mydictionary everyday finding out thewords using translation every lesson. Inmy opinion I think you should giveeverything a try.If I didn’t understand some words or
the subjects in the lessons I used adictionary and asked the teachers forhelp. I’ve also experienced arguments:when you start fighting aboutsomething. I’ve stopped the arguingand stay away from people who likearguing. I’ve grown up and am moresensitive and mature. And I’m quitehappy that I’ve improved my Englishand I don’t have to ask my friends tohelp me with words. Two years laterright now I can speak English but I stillcan’t speak perfectly and I’m still stuckwith wordy sentences, grammar and soon. But I tried and didn’t give up. Ibuki,Blackford.
“Do. Not do. There is no try.”Going to a different country, withoutyour family, in a different language andyou arrive. How would you feel? This happened to me, it’s a real story. When I arrived here in England and Iwent to my school I tried to makefriends but it was so difficult because Iwas so sad and everyone spoke so fast. Icouldn’t speak, it was difficult but I keptgoing and I made some good friends. They helped me when I had someproblems or they listened to me even ifthey didn’t understand what I wastalking about. But obviously I still haveproblems, but little by little they arebecoming smaller. If you are in a similar situation don’t
worry; everything is going to get better,
just keepgoing andyour friendswill help you. And if there’sanyone who makes yourlife difficult don’t be upset;trust me, this happenedto me but I know it isgoing to be better.Just forget him or herand make new friendsand don’t worry if theyare in another year.Everyone can helpyou. And rememberthat you can also talk withyour teachers and parents. They are always there for you. So, if you go to a different country:
go and as Yoda said; ‘Do. Not Do. Thereis no try.’ Rocio, Arion.
“Do. Not do. There is no try.”Have you ever thought about themeaning of this sentence?I’m from Spain and I’m 12 years old.My paretns wanted me to learn Englishso they sent me to King’s. The firstthing I thought was: ‘ I can’t do it, I willbe homesick every day,’ but I didn’thave a choice. When I was on the plane going to
where my next school will be I wasscared about what could happen becauseit’s another language, other people andno friends. I was terrified about whatcould happen. But when I arrived here everyone
was very friendly and funny. AlthoughI have to say that they were strange. But I started making new friendsalthough I didn’t know how to speakproper English. The conclusion about what I think
the sentence, ‘Do. Not do. There is notry’ means is that there is no try; it’sabout if you are trying to do somethingnew that you are not sure about whatwill happen, you just have to do it andface the consequences rather than if youdo nothing and just lie in bed withouttrying.
