Kiribath: Sri Lankan Milk Rice

Mrs. Chamalka introduces the Sri Lankan treat, “Kiribath”, to the children. The Eagles learn how to make Sri Lankan milk rice during small group activities. Brandon, Colette, Taylor, and Lucas participate in a sensory activity cleaning the rice. “The water is white now”, observes Lucas. They explore dry rice, then wet rice and finally “sticky” rice. Mrs. Chamalka assists the children with the finishing touches of adding the coconut milk to the special snack. Once finished, the children provide Ms. Chamalka with feedback on the tasty treat: “Its still sticky”.

The Leaning Tower of …Cups?

Math with straws and cups oh my! Ridley demonstrates one-to-one correspondence as he counts up to 10 straws to create his tower! Anthony and Gabriel collaborate on the best way to stack the cups as tall as they can. They decide on a top-to-bottom of the cup method. Caleb strategically line-up his straws across the table to create a flat tower. The Eagles exhibit math concepts using basic everyday items.

Can you paint on “wood”?

The Eagles tryout painting wood. The children engage in a discussion about things we can on paint. Almost everyone said “paper” but what about “wood”? “What happens when you paint on this object?” The children participate in painting wood blocks during small group time. Natalie and Levi mix a few colors of paint before applying it to the blocks. “It will be a green house” says Natalie as she applies a few stokes of paint. The children add color to their structures using the now “colorful” wood blocks.
