LOCK YOUR VEHICLE! Yes, it takes seconds to break a window, but doing so makes noise – and criminals hate making noise.

TAKE YOUR VALUABLES! Remove any valuables and take items with you, including faceplates for any after market stereos. If a criminal doesn’t see anything, they’re less likely to break in, and will go to the next vehicle to window shop.

HIDE YOUR VALUABLES! Remember to hide your valuables BEFORE you park in the place you’re leaving your vehicle. If a criminal sees you put a laptop in the trunk, they’ll just break into the trunk when you leave. The same advice goes for putting property under a seat. If a criminal sees you reaching under a seat, they’ll assume something is under there and break in, looking for property.

DON’T PARK IN SECLUDED AREAS! Parking in well-lit parking lots, with good “sight lines,” make it more likely your vehicle is visible to the general public. Attended parking lots, monitored by uniformed or easily identifiable legitimate parking attendants, are ideal. Remember, criminals don’t like witnesses.

KEEP A RECORD! Record serial numbers of property you may leave inside your vehicle. If stolen, it’s more likely that a suspect will be identified and caught, if he tries to pawn the stolen property. Feral Hogs Sighted in Eagle SpringsContributed by Keith Crenshaw

Texas has the largest feral hog population in the country. Feral hogs or wild hogs are an exotic species of pig that was brought over during colonization and at various times throughout the history, were released to run wild. Over time they have developed to what we now call the Feral Hog. Estimates for the population of free roaming feral hogs for the state of Texas range from 1 to 3 million in total numbers and have been considered a nuisance animal for farmers and ranchers for well over 200 hundred years. Feral hogs cause a huge economic impact on agricultural; and more recently, to urban properties. Over the last several years, the City of Sugarland and other communities around the Houston area have been dealing with the issue of property damage by feral hogs. In urban areas, feral hogs are most often found along irrigated lawns, retention ponds, local wetlands, and golf courses. Feral hogs root up and destroy the soil surface for two reasons: 1) they are looking for food by eating bugs, grubs, earthworms, and rooted vegetation, (feral hogs are omnivores); and 2) are looking for places to cool off by covering themselves in mud. It was brought to the attention of Texas Parks & Wildlife in January of 2012 that feral hogs had moved into the neighborhoods along the north side of Beltway 8 from the communities of Summerwood to Eagle Springs. There was a report of a property owner in Aspen Glen, who had experienced property damage between his property and the retention pond that lies just south of it. A trapping and removal protocol was begun by Crest Management to remove the Feral Hogs from the area. Trapping and removal is the best management tool for urban landowners to reduce the damage caused by them. Feral hogs are difficult to control because they, 1) reproduce quickly, 2) can live just about anywhere, and 3) are highly mobile. Females can breed as young as 6 months of age and produce up to 5 litters in a two year period. Feral hogs gestate their young for 115 days and have litters with an average size of 6 piglets, but can range up to 12 piglets per female. Feral hogs move in family groups and because female hogs are highly protective of their young, residents should follow the leash law for their pets. A pet on a leash is less likely to chase after hogs and in turn get hurt. Feral hogs are known to chomp their jaws as a warning sound to let you know they are in the area, but are more likely to run for cover when disturbed.Because feral hogs are wild animals, residents should not approach them. Keith Crenshaw is one of two Urban Biologists that help the residents of Harris County under the Wildlife Diversity Program for Texas Parks & Wildlife.

Being Green at Home – Part 1When it comes to the environment, being a good

global citizen begins at home. From recycling to using alternative cleaning materials, small changes at home can add up to real benefits for our community and our planet, not to mention our health.

It may be a cliché, but the best way to be Earth-friendly is to cut down on what we consume and recycle whenever we can. The U.S. generates over 208 million tons of municipal solid waste a year, according to the National Institute of Health. That’s more than 4 pounds per person per day! Every little bit helps. Did you know that recycling just one glass bottle saves enough electricity to light up a 100-watt bulb for four hours?

Below are some easy ways to green up at home.WATCH THE TEMP

Almost half a home’s energy consumption is due to heating and cooling.

We’ve all heard it before, turn down the thermostat in cold weather and keep it higher in warm weather. Each degree below 68°F (20°C) during colder weather saves 3%-5% more in heating energy, while

keeping your thermostat at 78°F in warmer weather will save you energy and money. A programmable

thermostat will make these temperature changes for you automatically and are inexpensive and easy to install. Clean your air filter monthly during heavy usage.

To stay cool in warmer weather, shade your east and west windows and do heat-generating

activities such as dishwashing and clothes drying in the early morning or late evening. Use ceiling

fans instead of air conditioners when possible.

LIGHTSSwitching from traditional or incandescent light bulbs

to Compact Fluorescent Lighting (CFLs) is an effective, simple change everyone can do. Making this change will help to use less electricity at home and prevent greenhouse

gas emissions that lead to global climate change. Lighting accounts for close to 20 percent of the average home’s electric bill. ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs use up to 75 percent less energy than incandescent light bulbs and last up to 10 times longer.

If every home in America replaced just one incandescent light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified CFL, in one year it would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes.

While CFLs are more energy efficient, they do contain a small amount of mercury, which means they should be handled with care and disposed of properly. They cannot go into the trash bin for pick up! They are accepted at household hazardous waste (HHW) facilities and many local hardware stores such as Lowe’s and Home Depot accept them for proper disposal.

CLEAN GREENStop buying household cleaners that are potentially toxic to

both you and the environment. Learn to read labels for specific, eco-friendly ingredients that also perform effectively. These include grain alcohol instead of toxic butyl cellosolve, commonly found in carpet cleaner and some window cleaners as a solvent; coconut or other plant oils rather than petroleum in detergents; and plant-oil disinfectants such as eucalyptus, rosemary or sage rather than triclosan, an antifungal agent found in soaps and deodorant.

If you’re really ambitious you may want to try making your own cleaning products. Use simple ingredients such as plain soap, water, baking soda, vinegar, washing soda (sodium carbonate), lemon juice and borax and save money at the same time. Recipes are easy to find online or you can find many books with information on making your own cleaning supplies at your local library. Two good ones to try are: “Clean and Green” and “Better Basics for the Home.”

REDUCE PLASTICS Every year, Americans throw away over 100 billion polyethylene

plastic bags. Everything from grocery and trash bags to plastic sandwich bags. Many people don’t realize that plastics are made from petroleum; the processing and burning of which is considered one of the main contributors to global warming, according to the EPA. In addition, sending plastics to the landfill also increases greenhouse gases. Reduce, re-use and recycle your plastics for one of the best ways to help our environment.

USE LESS PAPERDid you know you can buy “tree-free” 100% post-consumer

recycled paper for everything from greeting cards to toilet paper? Paper with a high post-consumer waste content uses less virgin pulp and keeps more waste paper out of landfills.

Remove yourself from junk mail lists. About 44% of all junk mail is thrown in the trash, unopened and unread, and ends up in a landfill. Contact the Direct Marketing Association’s Mail Preference Service at P.O. Box 643, Carmel, NY 10512, to reduce the amount of junk mail you receive. Cold season broadleaf weeds are a major problem throughout our area where mild temperatures stimulate luxuriant growth during winter and spring. These weeds including dandelion, chickweed, henbit, burweed and clover are particularly troublesome in early spring when warm season turf grasses are dormant. Not only are these weeds unsightly, but they increase mowing requirements and delay the recovery of desirable grasses. Likewise, warm season broadleaf weeds including woodsorrel, spurge and buttonweed are troublesome during summer months. Controlling broadleaf weeds helps turf grasses develop a dense, uniform cover that resists further weed invasion, reduces mowing requirements and improves the appearance of a property.

Regular mowing and proper fertilization during late winter and spring improves the appearance of turf areas and reduces the competition weeds provide, but does not eliminate them from the turf. Chemical control with nonselective herbicides in dormant Bermuda grass or with selective herbicides, will remove weeds from the turf grass. When selecting an herbicide, accurate

Second thing, Watering! If you are still the one on the block dragging a water hose around the yard, make sure you don’t fall asleep or forget about it. Under watering and over watering will have a dramatic effect on your weed control as well as play a big part in the performance of your lawn. If you have a sprinkler system, use the optional program settings so that you can water the lawn areas less often but for a longer period and water the bedding areas more often for a shorter period of time.

Third and last thing, Feeding! There are many types of fertilizers. Remember to never apply fertilizer or any other chemical without proper safety equipment. Feeding you lawn will give it additional supplements needed to fend off weeds, insects and to promote a longer lasting turf. You can be effective in the war on weeds with only 4-5 feedings a year.

Think about it like this, grass is a living thing just like us. We need a regular hair cut, proper hydration and vitamins to live a stronger, healthier, more productive life. We can live without some of these things, but just like the grass not as long and not without problems. This will encourage diseases and other problems in the turf. Mow your lawn on a schedule, it is never a good idea to let the grass grow up high and cut it short. When the blades get longer the root system stops producing new runners and that causes your lawn to not have the thick lush look we want.

Eagle Springs Stroller Stride The Eagle Springs Stroller Stride group was created for stay at home Moms and Dads who are looking for a way to lose their baby weight (even Dads gain some baby weight!) and get to know other Moms and Dads in the neighborhood. It’s a free group, open to all residents of Eagle Springs who would like to participate. All you need to do is show up and start walking! We are currently meeting three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9:45am. We meet at the Sports Complex, off of Eagle Springs Parkway & Valley Lodge Parkway, and usually walk until about 10:30am. Although our current schedule only has us meeting to walk three times a week, we are open to adding addition walking days/times for those interested.
