Benefits of Quitting Smoking

Most people start smoking as teenagers. In fact, it’s

estimated that 90% of all smokers start smoking before age

21. Within 5 years after quitting smoking, your risk for heart

disease is almost reduced to that of a non-smoker.

Your body will notice benefits almost immediately -

after just... ◆ 20 minutes: Your blood pressure and heart rate

return to normal

◆ 8 hours: O2 levels in blood return to normal

◆ 48 hours: Sense of smell and taste improve

◆ 72 hours: Your lung capacity increases

◆ Three years after quitting, your risk of death from heart

attack is about the same as if you never smoked.

◆ People who exercise while trying to quit are twice as

likely to be successful than those who don’t exercise.

◆ Those who exercise while quitting also tend to gain less
