Introduction

Methodology function as a principle or rule that regulates a discipline. In

education it gives the subjects to be taught and the methods that will be

used to teach them.

When teaching it is important to have clear that everything has to have a

purpose, a goal to be reached; when talking about technology and using it in

classroom there is no exception. Technological tools are fundamental in

modern learning, if we want our students to acquire higher level skills and

get motivated by the lessons that we teach, we must include technological

tools into our lesson plans.

We have several resources that offer tutorials that guide us into the usage

of different tools and give us the opportunity to offer a range of activities

that motivate students and make them part of the learning process.

By implementing new technological education methods into the classroom

teachers are gaining students’ attention and therefore they do that

students put more effort into their work. Technology make pupils to be

active part of education, make them create and participate of all the

educational process.

At the following e-portfolio I present some resources and topics that are

closely related to the methodology of technology in education. This subject

allow me to understand in a wider way how technology can help students with

different intelligences and to build their self-confidence.

ICT and education

The digital literacy is the one that a person has to create using technology. By

using technology in classroom, there is a possibility to integrate all or various

subjects in one activity.

Students have the opportunity to develop higher thinking skills and create using

tools that they are used to manage as native technologists. Students feel

motivated and their learning process becomes real and meaningful.

Differentiated Instruction, Project-Based Learning,

Problem-based learning Computer-supported

collaborative learning

Differentiated instruction is the process

through which teachers give different level of instructions

to a students in the same classroom so students can achieve a

specific goal.

It also allows us as teachers to organize groups and

do collaborative work, projects and to solve problems

by putting together all the students’ abilities to show them

the importance that they have in a group.

STANDARDS

Technology in education is not only a resource, it is a

competency that helps to improve standards and that

is why it has to be carefully planned. ISTE are

standards for learning and teaching technology; they

describe how students have to use technology and how

teachers have to guide students into it.

When planning it is important to use not only ISTE

but also the Common European Framework, because

these two give us the competences that students have

to develop in order to reach higher order thinking

skills.

ISTE standards for teachers, Types of e-learning,

Principles of Technology Used in Educational Settings

Distance learning has always existed, but with the impact of new technology it has

become more popular. There is e-learning that consists of using computer to learn,

blended learning that consists in combining classroom interaction with computer

usage; it also allows differentiated instruction and group work.

There also exists the mobile learning that involves cellphones and iPad; or the

ubiquitous learning that is also known as anytime anywhere learning because it

allows its participants to be part of it whenever they can or they are. These new

“learnings” allow people to continue their education while working hard schedules or

studying careers that are far from where they live. This is the education of the

future and the future is now.

Principles of Technology Used in Educational Settings

When teaching with technological tools, it is important that we as teachers prepare

ourselves and choose the correct tools. We must remember that we need to learn to

use the tool properly in order to guide our students and solve their doubts.

Technological classrooms must be fun and create a relax environment for both

professors and students, that is why they need to be carefully designed.

All activities must be prepared by scaffolding and taking into consideration students’

age, level and knowledge.

Technological Lesson plans

It was the first time that I had to plan using this “machotes”. Although I have

been using technology for five years, with these lesson plans I had the

opportunity to implement new technological resources, my own creations and

that made me learn a lot.

Planning has now a new meaning for me, I am looking at education with new eyes.

Technology is not only a resource, but the best of the tools to be implemented

in order to create innovation, fun learning and develop several skills so students

can be part of the globalized world.

C-maps

Click on us

By creating c-maps I was able to summarize each topic and solve doubts.

It was an activity that allowed me to rewrite each topic with my own words and

make it easier to remember. It also gave me the opportunity to think in

activities that I could implement in my own classroom with my students so they

are paying attention when we are having grammar or topics that require their

concentration.

C-maps are not for everyone but they could write their opinions, could draw or

list words that come to their minds.

E-creation Tools and Self-Made Computer-Based

Resources: Getting ELLs to Play and Be Creative with

Language

There are so many tools that allow teachers to create their own puzzles,

crosswords and even their own famous tv games. As teachers of the new Era we

need to be creative and innovative; we cannot allow ourselves to repeat the

same activities and use the same materials or flashcards over and over again.

Using new technological resources can improve our skills developing.

If our students are motivated they will learn more and they learning will be

really meaningful.

Page 15: E folio joselin garcia

15

Communicative-Facilitating E-tools: Getting ELLs to

Produce Language

It consists in the type of communication that allows teachers and students to

interact synchronous and asynchronously. Students and teachers can be

communicated by using instant messaging and emails. They can create their

own rules and spaces to interact.

By building discussion boards and giving students different environments to

express themselves, they feel more motivated and their learning process is

meaningful and develops more skills than in a traditional classroom.

Writing -Facilitative E-tools: Getting ELLs to improve and

Focus on Their Literacy Skills

When students use e-tools to improve their reading and writing skills they

increase their comprehension level. Online boards, chat rooms and other sites

allow students to share ideas; to work in cooperative groups and correct each

other when writing mistakes or even solving doubts. Teachers can act as guides

and not as center of the class and that is positive for the meaningful learning

of the students. Writing and reading sometimes gets mechanical and boring for

students and that is why implementing e-tools make it motivational an exciting

for them.

Reading-Facilitative E-tools: Getting ELLs to improve and

Focus on Their Literacy Skills

Using writing resources as blogs help students to improve their spelling and

grammar structures without using the conventional ways. If we implement new

ways to evaluate our students writing they can be more motivated and they will

pay more attention into it. Technology can also help students to add more

vocabulary into their personal bank.

I think that allowing students to use internet, under supervision, can be really

beneficial for their writing skills developing.

Podcast

Learning about podcasting and screencast was very interesting. Using these

tools allowed me to create my first tutorial and use my voice for my first

animated story. I felt excited, even though I don’t like to record my voice to

be able to innovate in mi classroom made me do it.

It looked difficult but at the end it was fast, fun and a great resource to be

applied with my little ones.

Listening-Facilitative E-tools: Getting ELLs to improve

and Focus on Their comprehension Skills

Listening involves a lot of abilities and it requires a lot of resources to be used

in order to be successfully acquire. Listening improves speaking, improves

writing and improves the pronunciation. Using resources as podcasting,

vodcastings, music or movies can be helpful to help students to get in touch

with real English and to motivate them, they don’t feel like they are learning to

pronounce or to speak, they are just watching their favorite movies or listening

to their favorite music.

Students can also create their own videos, news podcasts or even tape their

own song. All to help them to listen themselves and others speaking in English.

E-assessments: Portfolios: Quizzes, and Rubrics

Orientation Leveling

Doing rubrics has always being time consuming, but as technology

has improved new resources have been developing, now we can

access into webpages that offer free software that create rubrics

about almost any topic in just a few minutes.

We can also access into webpages that allow us to create quizzes

that offer the possibility to be checked online. We just need to be

prepare with the correct questions and material.

Platforms: Virtual learning environments

Using Edmodo gave me the opportunity to create my own space. Now I am

thinking that I can create an account to share with parents so we can keep in

touch and share resources, worksheets, assignments and even students’ scores.

I had never thought about it but now I am building a platform that I will use to

improve my communication with them and to share experiences too.

I think that we even could have forums and chat rooms to solve doubts, it could

be really interesting.

Screencast and Podcast

I really enjoy each application, at the beginning I was really nervous because I

thought it was too difficult but when I realized that It was not, I couldn`t

stop!

I did not have a microphone in my computer but I tried to create my screen

cast and podcast, I felt wonderful and I started to think in all the uses I could

give it in my classrooms to my students, to their parents. All the opportunities

that this tutorials or stories creations will bring into my classroom.

I cannot describe the feeling because it is unreal.

Webquest

When doing my first webquest I felt lost because I have never work with so

many layouts before; but then I started enjoying it. At my actual work we use

guides to let our students know that they have to do, how they have to do it,

how they are going to be evaluated, the steps that they need to follow and all

the resources that they will be using. Using a webquest will facilitate the

creation of guides and the addition of links and evaluations into them. Students

will enjoy them more and they will feel like playing instead of doing just an

assignment.

Blog

Blogs are useful spaces in which people can share opinions about different

topics. I thought that creating a blog was easy but once I started I realized it

wasn’t. When people creates blogs they must be sure about the topic that they

want to share and discuss, they really have to believe in what they are saying

and the statements that they make have to be captivating.

For my writing a blog for students is one of the most difficult assignments,

when talking about college or university students it is easier; but elementary,

middle or high school students are difficult to capture. Blogs must be

educational but also have to entertain them, allow them to express themselves

and that is why it has to be carefully planned.

Moviemaker

This was my favorite application activity;I am a preschool teacher and I am

always looking for fun and innovational videos to teach vocabulary. It is really

difficult to find videos that capture my students’ attention and that are

appropriate for their ages. Sometimes I would like videos to be more specific

and I thought it was too difficult to create them.

I feel so glad that I could create two excellent examples without much time

and that my students could enjoy them. I will continue adding more videos

because they help me and my students to review vocabulary.

Conclusion

Using technology in classrooms make the learning environment motivational

and meaningful for students, when using the proper methodology teachers

can create the perfect atmosphere to develop higher thinking skills and

allow students to involve in constructing their own learning.

Nowadays students are learning about themselves, how they learn better,

what tools help them and facilitate the learning experience and they even

have suggestions for teachers. So as professionals on this field, we have to

keep up with their rhythm and learn about software, pages and tools that

allow our lesson plans to have the variety that our pupils need to feel that

they are part of a new era in education.

By combining modern and traditional education we create more opportunities

for our students to get attached with each topic. We give them the

opportunity to create, find solutions, share ideas, make projects and have

fun while doing it.

Who says that education has to be boring, technology gives us the

opportunity to expand our minds and go beyond the classroom. Technology

also helps the teacher to include material for different intelligences and

differentiated instruction guides in order to guide students in all levels and

help them to reach their personal goals.

Technology makes students and not only teachers responsible about their

learning process and that is what makes it so fundamental for the

educational field.
