T j quite evident that progres' in turf-gra management is definitely being

slowed down by the scare ity of well-trainedyoung men to take over the many jobswhir h the rapid development in all areasof this tremendous busi ness has created.There is parallel need in many fields ofturf management. In the future, golf willfind itself increasingly in competition withthese field for a supply of trained talentthat is pathetically inadequate in numbersto meet demand.

I have been asked to peak on trainingopportunitie available in colleges and uni-versities, to what ext nt these arc beingused, and what the prospects are for youngmen taking such training.

In an effort to fulfill thi as ignment, Isent que tiormaires to a number of insti-tutions which, to my knowlcdg , have takenan active interest in turfgrass, either froman educational or research standpoint, orboth. I received replies from nineteen ofthese in the U." and one in anada."

The summary of information given bythese school i I believe, an almost com-plete re ord of the contribution by edu-cational institutions in the training ofyoung men for the turf'grass business dur-ing the lat 10 years.

1. Of the 20 institution reporting, 9 of-fer a 4- ear currie ulurn in turfgrass man-agement leading to a B. , . degree.

2. Only one institution at the presenttime offer a 2-ye(lr training course.

3. Only one i nst itution offer a shortcourse of more than l-wcck duration. Thisis designed primarily as a refresher for in-dividuals with some c perienc and attracts only a v ry few beginners.

clubs these days - what to do to providemaximum enjoyment for all members ofthe family - is being solved at the Phila-delphia CC.There, a $1".500,000 improvement pro-

gram will transform the Spring Mill lay-out not only into one of the most moderngolf clubs in the area but into one of thecountry's outstanding family recreationcenters.The program involves construction of

an air-conditioned new clubhouse and ex-tensive redesigning of the course. It isthe largest country club project to be un-dertaken in the Philadelphia area sincethe early '30s. Philadelphia Country Clubis the third oldest organized club in theUnited States and was the second clubto receive a PGA charter.James A. Nolen, Jr. and Herbert H.

Swinburne, the young architects in chargeof the project, say the new buildings aredesigned to "solve the major problem con-fronting practically every country club inthe country - the handling of all familymembers conveniently, economically andin such a manner to give them maximumenjoyment."Nolen, who shoots in the low 80's and is

himself a member of the club, points out

that in the beginning most country clubscentered largely around golf - golf onlyfor the men of the family. But today thetrend is to make every club a real familycenter.At Saucon Valley, Bethlehem, Pa., for

example, a separate building has beenerected for youngsters. Philadelphia CChas not gone quite that far, but it isdoing a great deal to give the club maxi-mum usefulness for all members of thefamily. Here, the youngsters will have theirown rumpus room, called a- "CarnivalRoom," their own lockers, soft-drink andsnack bar, a juke box - and in generalhave their own private teen-age area.The contemporary-style clubhouse, lo-

cated on Spring Mill Road, commands abreathtaking view of the Schuylkill Valley.Construction is on schedule and the build-ing and other facilities will be ready inthe late spring.The project includes, besides the main

clubhouse, four tennis courts, an Olympic-size swimming pool plus a separate wadingpool for youngsters, a 300-car parkingarea, gun room, card and billiard room.The main dining room can be divided,

through use of doors and drapes, into var-ious rooms so that a number of groups canbe accommodated simultaneously. Thekitchen is centrally located and accessibleto all dining areas.Other rooms will include:The Polo Room is the front section of

the dining room which acco~modatesabout 140 persons. It can be opened intoand made a part of the rest of the maindining room which will then accoramo-date more than 300 members, but can alsobe closed off so that in days of minimum
