O-Rama Filled Summer
Are you 4-H Strong was the theme for the 2014
4-H O-Rama. This year Mon-roe County 4-H members competed in county, dis-trict, and state O-Rama.
4-H O-Rama is more than
just competition and a time for 4-
H members to strut their stuff.
O-Rama is learning new things, mak-
ing new friends and reconnecting
with old friends. 4-H O-Rama events
offer something for all 4-Hers.
There are events in bait casting,
public speaking, horticulture, talent,
and much more.
The 4-H youth of Monroe
County competed in five events at
the county level. Ten 4-H members
competed in bait casting & game fish
ID, sport fishing, horticulture, BB/
gun safety, and bicycle safety. The 4
-Hers had a great time and
learned new events they would like
to do again. All participants in the
Monroe County 4-H O-Rama were
offered an opportunity to advance
to the 4-H District O-Rama.
Nine Monroe County 4-H members par-
ticipated in the County O-Rama.
State 4-H O-Rama
Two Senior 4-H members
advanced to the State 4-H
O-Rama held at the U of A
campus in Fayetteville on
July 23-25. These two indi-
viduals shined in their com-
petitive efforts, made new
friends, and made goals for
their 4-H involvement for
the upcoming year.
Keyshawn brought home a 4th
place ribbon for his participation
in the Bicycle Safety competition
while Sue brought home a 3rd
place for her participation in the
BB/Gun Safety competition. Both
youth look forward to next year
and bringing home trophies.

Monroe County youth spends a
week in the seat of state gov-
ernment learning how govern-
ment works and putting what
they learned to work during the
Citizenship Leadership Camp
held June 22-27.
More than 100 teens ages 13-17
began their experience at the 4-
H Center in Ferndale to learn
leadership, citizenship and ser-
vice lessons. Youth learned what
it means to be a public servant
Citizenship Leadership
Citizenship Camp and have their voice heard
even if they’re still teenag-
ers.
Teens learned about the
state government structure
and how laws are passed by
going through the process
themselves and being
coached by those who work
in government and public ser-
vice. They also toured the
Justice Building and Clinton
Presidential Library to learn
more about government, vis-
ited the Electric Coopera-
tives of Arkansas, the Witt
Stephens, Jr. Central Arkansas
Nature Center and performed a
service project at Boyle Park in
Little Rock.

On August 18, 2014 the 4-H
members of Monroe County
voted unanimously for their
club to be named Monroe Clo-
vers 4-H Club. Along with a
new name the 4-Hers also
elected officers.
4-H members were allowed to
volunteer for their choice of
offices and only senior mem-
bers could run for president
and vice-president. Each per-
son wanting to be elected to
an office had to stand before
the group and tell why they
wanted to run for office.

Youth
Science Day
4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD) is an exciting, in-
teractive learning experience
that engages thousands of
youth across the country in
conducting the National Sci-

on October 8, 2014 in Wash-
ington, D.C.
The University of Arizona developed
the 2014 National Science Experiment:
Rockets to the Rescue!
This year, youth will be tasked with
this mission: in light of the recent
natural disasters such as Typhoon Hai-
yan, National 4-H Council is asking
youth to design and build an aerody-
namic food transportation device that
can deliver a payload of nutritious food
to disaster victims. Youth will learn

4-H is a volunteer led organi-
zation! A 4-H volunteer is de-
fined as any adult that works
directly with 4-H youth. These
volunteers are caring and com-
mitted people that understand
the value of selfless service.
They have a willingness to
serve both youth and families in
our community, and are the
“backbone” of the 4-H program.
These wonderful individuals all
have a unique set of skills and
experiences they truly enjoy
sharing with 4-H youth! If you
are interested in becoming a 4-H
Volunteer Leader, please contact
the Monroe County Cooperative
Extension Office for more infor-
mation at 870-747-3397.
