RELEASE ANNOUCEMENT: DYNATRACE BUSINESS SERVICE MANAGEMENT 12.4
\
BSM 12.4 Bridges Gap between Complexity and Fluidity of Organization-Specific DPM Needs
Dynatrace announces the General Availability of its Business
Service Management technology stack, version 12.4. This new
release introduces fundamentally new capabilities that facilitate
continuous change and growth in new as well as existing
implementations. It also delivers various performance, stability,
currency and security enhancements.
BSM 12.4 features a radically new approach to building highly
custom and interactive dashboards, and adds a new data access
and process automation layer that customers can program
interactively using an extensible collection of simple building
blocks.
Dynatrace’s suite of Digital Performance Management solutions is
considered unsurpassed in the industry in terms of breadth and
depth, but organizations typically do not exclusively rely on
Dynatrace technology for all of their unique DPM needs. As our
customers endeavor to evolve towards increasingly more
comprehensive and aligned DPM implementations, challenges
emerge when they attempt to integrate the inevitable diversity of
legacy and next-gen monitoring, reporting and remediation
technologies and strategies. These challenges are typically highly
organization-specific and cannot be addressed by one-size-fits-all
solutions. This is why Dynatrace BSM continues to thrive as an
indispensable technology in actively evolving and maturing DPM
implementations.
BSM 12.4 radically changes the way it helps customers address
the conceptual as well as the many mundane challenges involved
in growing DPM infrastructures towards greater integration and
automation. BSM 12.4 greatly reduces the ‘brittleness’ and
change-resistant nature of custom solutions by prioritizing agility,
continuous improvement and ongoing enrichment over exhaustive requirements discovery, analysis and planning.

Datavision
BSM 12.4 introduces Datavision, a new dashboard architecture designed to
facilitate the creation and evolution of highly interactive pages and consoles.
Datavision runs almost completely in the browser, and virtually all of its user-
facing behavior can be explicitly controlled and expanded through the use of
pageflows. Pageflows are visual ‘scripts’ that can be created interactively by
developers of dashboard pages. Pageflows control what happens on a page, as
well as when and how relevant back-end resources are invoked.
TRANSPARENT THEMING
Datavision features a theme manager that allows pages and panels to be
interactively ‘styled’ (e.g. background colors/images, transparencies, margins,
corner radii, etc.) in a manner that allows it to intelligently detect what the best
color scheme and contrast settings are for each portlet on a page. Datavision
then autonomously modifies
specific stylesheet classes
for each portlet to make
them display their content
in the most harmonious and
readable way possible. It
also notifies each portlet
explicitly in case it needs to
make further adjustments
to display optimally.
FOCUS ON EXTERNAL DATA
Datavision encourages the
use of external content and
data. In addition to out-of-the-box visualizations, existing and newly
developed web applications can be incorporated to assemble rich
and meaningful pages. Since Datavision’s own visualizations
(portlets) are de-coupled from specific data interfaces, it is easy to
use data that is retrieved from any web-accessible data service,
including BSM’s Interfaced Processors and Datamotion REST
interfaces. This enables Datavision to load pages and portlets only
once. After that, communication with the server is all about data.
As a result, the web server is no longer involved in
creating and rendering pages. This drastically improves
responsiveness, performance and scalability.
CONTINUOUS EVOLUTION
Every aspect of a Datavision page can be configured
interactively. Once satisfied with a certain set of
changes, the whole dashboard can be saved with the
click of a button, without having to reload the page. As
a result, editing is smooth, intuitive and immediate.
Every ‘Save’ action creates a backup of the entire
dashboard. That makes reverting to a previous state
simple – and trying out something new, risk-free.
The end-result is a dashboard development environment
that is easy to deploy, easy to use, and easy to evolve.
And did we mention it is inherently open, fast and
scalable?
Datamotion
BSM 12.4 also introduces Datamotion, a new data retrieval and process automation facility that makes custom back-end implementations
easy to build, easy to communicate to others, and easy to change as your needs evolve.
BEYOND JAVASCRIPT
Prior to the introduction of Datamotion, custom back-end tasks in BSM needed to be implemented
using JavaScript. While this allowed for almost limitless flexibility, writing code is a time-consuming,
highly specialized and error-prone undertaking. BSM still exposes those traditional ‘interception
points’, but implementing such tasks has become a lot easier with the introduction of Datamotion.
Using an extensive (and extensible) library of components developers can now assemble complex
data/task/work flows in a visual and interactive manner, using languages that are optimized for
specific problem domains.
FLOWS
Datamotion exposes three languages: dataflows, taskflows and workflows. Dataflows are geared
towards extraction, transformation and ‘production’ of data. Taskflows are designed to implement
activities that are best expressed ‘procedurally’. Workflows are meant to drive and orchestrate long-
running, inherently asynchronous processes. All types of flows promote reuse of field-proven code by
leveraging a common component library. Flows can be mixed and matched to allow for decomposition
of complex scenarios into smaller parts that can each be implemented using an appropriate type of
flow. Additionally, the visual, narrative presentation facilitates collaboration among team members.
Flows can be deployed as long-running or scheduled server-centric ‘processes’, or as on-demand
web-enabled ‘operations’. Input parameters may be passed to affect the behavior of flows, and any
data produced by a flow is returned to the caller.
EXTENSIBILITY
The components that Datamotion flows use have well-defined interfaces that make them work seamlessly with the various modes of
operation of the different types of flows. Any component that implements these interfaces can be added the library. Online as well as
embedded documentation describes what is already available out-of-the-box, and how developers can build their own components.
DEPLOYMENT
A typical challenge in developing custom solutions is the migration of an implementation from one environment (e.g. DEV) to another
(e.g. UAT or PROD). Datamotion encourages developers to abstract any collection of environment-specific information (e.g. server
names, user names, passwords, etc.) into ‘aliases’. The settings referenced by
aliases are resolved at runtime using an encrypted file that contains their
definitions. Since each environment has its own ‘aliases’ file, flows can be easily
moved between environments without touching their implementations. That
greatly reduces the time and risk involved in rolling out updates.
FOCUS ON PERFORMANCE JOURNEY
BSM will always be about enabling the non-standard scenarios, the customer-
specific challenges, and the evolution from insular DPM technologies towards
integrated, coherent solutions. We know that your organization does not stand
still, and that yesterday’s solutions are tomorrow’s problems. BSM 12.4 therefore
embraces DPM as a
practice with ever-changing
needs and ideas. BSM will
help you stay productive
and unafraid to grow,
experiment and innovate.
Ultimately, that is what’s
new about BSM 12.4.
