Dynamic testing of electricalmachines for industrial use
A unique test facility for dynamictesting of electrical machines forindustrial use is part of SP’s Batteryand Hybrid Systems section. Incomparison with the conventionalstatic way of testing electricalmachines, with a test bench andtorque sensors, dynamic testingoffers a more cost-effective, lesstime-consuming and more flexibleway of evaluating the characteristicsof electrical machines.
The dynamic test method for motor-mapping of Permanent MagnetSynchronous Machines (PMSM) is based on the use of the rotarymomentum of the electrical machine. No external load is necessary,as required by the static method. The mobility of the method meansthat machines can be tested under a wider range of conditions andin different environments. By using a unique resolver calibration for each individual electricalmachine, accurate measurements for the deceleration/accelerationcan be obtained. The whole process is monitored and controlled bya real-time controller with a dedicated Field Programmable GateArray (FPGA) programmed in LabVIEW. SP offers:• Verification of PMSM designs• Optimisation of motor control systems• Performance measurements• Prototype and development tests• Performance tests for different environmental conditions
